Overview

The VM-4HDCPxl is an HDCP compliant distribution amplifier for DVI-D signals. The unit inputs one DVI-D signal, and distributes it to four outputs.

The VM-4HDCPxl features:

  • Up to 2.25Gbps bandwidth per graphic channel’
  • HDTV compatibility and HDCP compliance
  • I-EDIDPro™ Kramer Intelligent EDID Processing™, an intelligent EDID handling and processing algorithm that ensures Plug and Play operation for DVI systems
  • Acquisition of the EDID from one output, from several connected outputs (auto-mix) or from the default’ EDID for fast and efficient connection of the unit
  • A 19″ 1U rack mountable enclosure and is fed from a 100-240 V AC universal switching power supply

About HDCP

The High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) standard protects digital video and audio signals transmitted over DVI or HDMI connectionsbetween two HDCP-enabled devices to eliminate the reproduction ofcopyrighted material. To protect copyright holders (such as movie studios) from having their programs copied and shared, the HDCP standard provides for the secure and encrypted transmission of digital signals.

Defining EDID

The Extended Display Identification Data (EDID*) is a data-structure, provided by a display, to describe its capabilities to an HDCP source. The EDID enables the VM-4HDCPxl to “know” what kind of monitor is connected to the output. The EDID includes the manufacturer’s name, the product type, the timing data supported by the display, the display size, luminance data and (for digital displays only) the pixel mapping data.

Recommendations for Best Performance

To achieve the best performance:

  • Connect only good quality connection cables, thus avoiding interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables)
  • Avoid interference from neighboring electrical appliances and position your VM-4HDCPxl away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust

Installing in a Rack

This section provides instructions for rack mounting the unit.

Before Installing in a Rack

Before installing in a rack, be sure that the environment is within the recommended range:

  • Operating temperature range: +5° to +45° C (41° to 113° F)
  • Operating humidity range: 10 to 90% RHL, non-condensing
  • Storage temperature range: -20° to +70° C (-4° to 158° F)
  • Storage humidity range: 5 to 95% RHL, non-condensing

CAUTION: When installing on a 19″ rack, avoid hazards by taking care that:

  1. It is located within the recommended environmental conditions, as the operating ambient temperature of a closed or multi unit rack assembly may exceed the room ambient temperature.
  2. Once rack mounted, enough air will still flow around the machine.
  3. The machine is placed straight in the correct horizontal position.
  4. You do not overload the circuit(s). When connecting the machine to the supply circuit, overloading the circuits might have a detrimental effect on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Refer to the appropriate nameplate ratings for information. For example, for fuse replacement, see the value printed on the product label.
  5. The machine is earthed (grounded) in a reliable way and is connected only to an electricity socket with grounding. Pay particular attention to situations where electricity is supplied indirectly (when the power cord is not plugged directly into the socket in the wall), for example, when using an extension cable or a power strip, and that you use only the power cord that is supplied with the machine.

How to Rack Mount

To rack-mount a machine:

  1. Attach both ear brackets to the machine. To do so, remove the screws from each side of the machine (3 on each side), and replace those screws through the ear brackets.
  2. Place the ears of the machine against the rack rails, and insert the proper screws (not provided) through each of the four holes in the rack ears.

Note

  • In some models, the front panel may feature built-in rack ears
  • Detachable rack ears can be removed for desktop use
  • Always mount the machine in the rack before you attach any cables or connect the machine to the power
  • If you are using a Kramer rack adapter kit (for a machine that is not 19), see the Rack Adapters user manual for installation instructions available from: http://www.kramerelectronics.com

Connecting the VM-4HDCPxI

To connect the VM-4HDCPxl, as illustrated in the example in Figure 2, do the following 1

  1. Connect a source (for example, a DVD player) to the DVI INPUT connector.
  2. Connect the DVI OUTPUT connectors to up to four DVI acceptors”, using Kramer DVI cables. In this example, connect the:
    • OUTPUT 1 connector to acceptor 1 (for example, plasma display 1)
    • OUTPUT 2 connector to acceptor 2 (for example, LCD TV 1)
    • OUTPUT 3 connector to acceptor 3 (for example, LCD TV 2)
    • OUTPUT 4 connector to acceptor 4 (for example, plasma display 2)
  3. Connect the power cord to the mains electricity (not shown in Figure 2).
  4. Turn on the power and as needed, acquire the EDID (see section 7).
  • Switch OFF the power on each device before connecting it to your VM-4HDCPxl. After connecting your VM-4HDCPxl, switch on its power and then switch on the power on each device
  • Not all outputs need to be connected

Acquiring the EDID

You can acquire the EDID from:

  • One output (the selected output LED flashes), see section 7.1
  • The default EDID (all the output LEDs flash), see section 7.2
  • Several connected outputs, the auto-mix mode’ (the output LEDs illuminate), see section 7.3

To cycle between the different modes, press the EDID SELECT button as shown in Figure 3

Acquiring/Changing the EDID from One Output

To acquire or change the EDID of one new output display:

  1. Turn on the VM-4HDCPx1.
  2. Connect the new output display device.
  3. Press the EDID SELECT button to enter the ONE OUTPUT mode as shown in Figure 3
  4. Press EDID SELECT as needed to select the desired output.
    • The appropriate OUTPUT STATUS LED flashes indicating that that output channel is selected.
  5. Press the EDID READ button to copy the EDID of the selected OUTPUT to the input 2.
    • While the EDID is being copied, the EDID SELECT and READ buttons illuminate.
    • The new EDID is copied when both buttons no longer illuminate.

Acquiring the Default EDID

To reset to the default EDID, do the following:

  1. Turn on the VM-4HDCPxl.
  2. Press the EDID SELECT button and set it to the DEFAULT EDID mode.
    • All the OUTPUT STATUS LEDs flash simultaneously.
  3. Press the EDID READ button to copy the default EDID to the input2.
    • While the EDID is being copied, the EDID SELECT and READ buttons illuminate. The new EDID is copied when both buttons no longer illuminate.

Acquiring the Auto-mix EDID from the Connected Outputs

To acquire the Auto-mix EDID:

  1. Turn on the VM-4HDCPxl.
  2. Connect the desired output display devices.
  3. Enter the AUTO-MIX mode as shown in Figure 3.
    • The OUTPUT STATUS LEDs illuminate.
  4. Press the READ button to copy the EDID of the selected OUTPUT to the input2.
