The product is a deadbolt lock manufactured by Kwikset. It is available in both low profile and regular models. The low profile
models include the 258 series, Uptown, Downtown, Midtown, and San Clemente rectangular deadbolts. The regular models include the 158, 159, 660, 665, 780, 816, 980, 985, Halifax, and Milan deadbolts. -
The installation guide can be used for installing various types of deadbolts. The required tools for installation may vary depending on the install type.

Product Usage Instructions
- For Low Profile Deadbolts Models (258 series, Uptown, Downtown, Midtown, and San Clemente rectangular)
- Extend the latch bolt (make sure the curve is on the bottom of the latch).
- Adjust the backset of the latch if needed.
- If the D-shaped hole is not centered, adjust the latch using the latch adjustment steps.
- Install the latch by following the appropriate instructions fordoor edge chiseled or door edge not chiseled.
- Determine the required mounting screws based on the thickness of your door.
- Install the deadbolt interior by ensuring the turn piece is vertical and the mounting plate is pre-installed or re-installed if removed.
- Install the deadbolt exterior by following the instructions for curve orientation and keeping it parallel to the door.
- Use the screws determined in step 5 to secure the deadbolt.
- If the screws are difficult to tighten, ensure the latch is installed correctly.
- Proceed to Step 12 to finalize the installation.
- For Regular Deadbolts Models (158, 159, 660, 665, 780, 816, 980, 985, Halifax, and Milan)
- Extend the latch bolt (make sure the curve is on the bottom of the latch).
- Adjust the backset of the latch if needed.
- If the D-shaped hole is not centered, adjust the latch using the latch adjustment steps.
- Prepare the latch by installing the plate or collar based on door edge chiseled or not chiseled.
- Install the latch by retracting the latch bolt and ensuring it is properly aligned with the door.
- Install the front plate using provided screws and wood blocks.

Scroll to the bottom if you need help in preparing your door
Extend latch bolt (Low profile models)
Adjust the backset of the latch (if needed)
- Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch case flush against the door edge.
- If the D-shaped hole is centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. Proceed to step 4.
- If the D-shaped hole is NOT centered, adjust latch. See “Latch Adjustment” (step 3C).
- Latch Adjustment (only if needed)
Install Latch

Use a screwdriver to retract the latch bolt.

Determine required mounting screws

Measure the thickness of your door to determine the required mounting screws for step 6.

Call Kwikset to order a service kit for 2-1/4” (57 mm) thick doors. Use the screws provided in the kit.

Troubleshooting
- To finalize your installation, proceed to Step 12.
Extend latch bolt (Regular deadbolt models)

Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.

If the latch holes are centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. Proceed to step 9.
If the D-shaped hole is NOT centered, adjust latch. See “Latch Adjustment” (step 8C).

Preparing Your Door

Use template to mark holes on door

Select the template that allows you to place the template on the EXTERIOR side of door. Fold template along fold line and place fold line along the edge of door. Place centerline approximately 38 in (97 cm) from the floor.

Mark hole on the face of the door. Select desired backset before marking hole. If there is another hole in the door, or if you are drilling double doors, make sure to keep the backset consistent.

Mark hole on the edge of the door. Select door thickness before marking hole.
Drill holes in door

Drill from one side until the point of drill just breaks through, then complete hole from the other side to prevent splintering

Determine which latch will be installed and prepare door edge
- Proceed to Next Step.
Prepare door frame for strike
- Locate center of strike hole:
- Measure back from door stop, 1/2 thickness of door.
