5. Use

5.1 Before each use
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Depending on the application, use face shield, safety goggles or safety glasses. As appropriate, wear dust mask, hearing protectors and gloves (Fig. 9).

DENALI C1OgfxlTA7L 18V Impact Drill Instruction Manual - Before each
use

  • Check the tool and its accessories for damage. Do not use the tool if it is damaged or worn out.
  • Check for loose screws, misalignment or binding of moving parts, or any other condition that may affect the operation. If abnormal vibration or noise occurs, switch the tool off immediately and have the problem corrected before further use.
  • Check the condition of the battery pack. Charge the battery pack if needed. Do not use the battery pack if it is bulging or hot.
  • Always firmly hold the tool by its handle. Keep the tool clean and wear clean gloves to maintain a firm grip while in use.
  • Check that the ventilation openings are not obstructed. Obstructed ventilation openings can cause overheating. Clean the tool with compressed dry air if needed.
  • Switch the tool off immediately if bystanders are interrupting the work. Never lay the tool down until the bit has come to a complete stop. The spinning bit may grab the surface and pull the tool out of your control.
  • Do not work continuously for extensive amounts of time with the tool. Take breaks in between work to ensure full concentration while using the tool.
5.2 Switching on/off
  • To switch the tool on: Set the forward/trigger off/reverse switch (E) left or right and then gently press the trigger switch (A) (Fig. 10).
  • To switch the tool off: Release the trigger switch (A).

NOTICE The speed of the tool can be adjusted by pressing the trigger switch (A) to varying extents. A light pressure on the trigger results in a low rotational speed. Increased pressure on the trigger switch (A) causes an increase in speed.

6. Tips

6.1 Drilling

⚠ CAUTION Risk of injury!
Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields during tool operation. If operation is dusty, also wear a dust mask.

  • Check that the forward/trigger off/reverse switch (E) is at the correct setting (forward or reverse).
  • To prevent cracking of drill holes start to drill with low rotation speed and then increase it.
  • If possible, secure the workpiece to be drilled in a vies or with clamps to keep it from turning as the drill bit rotates.
  • Always hold the tool perpendicularly to the point to be drilled. Holding it at an angle may cause slipping or jamming of the drill bit.
  • Do not force or apply side pressure to elongate a hole.
  • When drilling hard, smooth surfaces, use a center punch (not provided) to mark the desired location of the hole. Alternatively, punch a shallow hole with a minor drill bit first to prevent the drill bit from slipping.
  • Maintain enough pressure to keep the drill bit “engaging”.
  • If the drill bit jams in the workpiece or if the tool stalls, stop the tool immediately.
Remove the drill bit from the workpiece and determine the reason for jamming.
6.1.1 Drilling in metal

NOTICE For maximum performance, use high-speed steel bits for metal or steel drilling.

  • The harder the material, the greater the pressure that must be applied on the tool.
  • For harder materials, use slower speeds.
  • Lubricate the tip of the drill bit occasionally with cutting oil (not provided) to keep it from overheating. The added oil prolongs the life of the drill bit and increases the drilling performance.
  • If the hole to be drilled is fairly large, drill a smaller hole first, then enlarge to the required size. Maintain enough pressure to ensure that the drill bit does not spin in the hole.
  • Maintain speed and pressure that allows drilling without overheating of the drill bit.
    Applying too much pressure will:
    – Overheat the tool
    – Wear the bearings
    – Bend or burn the drill bit
    – Result in off- center or irregularly shaped holes
6.1.2 Drilling in wood

NOTICE For maximum performance, use high-speed twist bit or brad point bit for wood drilling. Note that drill bits may overheat unless pulled out frequently to clear chips from the flutes.

  • Use a slow starting speed and increase the speed as the drill bit “engages” into the workpiece. By using a slow starting speed, you are able to keep the drill bit from “wandering”.
  • When drilling through holes, place/clamp a block of wood behind the workpiece to prevent ragged or splintered edges on the back side of the hole (Fig. 11 ).

wood

6.2 Driving fasteners

NOTICE in driving mode, the variable-speed control of the trigger switch (A) must be used with caution. The correct procedure is to start slowly and increasing speed as the fastener runs down. Set the fastener snugly by slowing the tool to a stop. If this procedure is not followed, the tool will have a tendency to torque or twist in your hands when the fastener seats.

Torque is a turning or force that drives a fastener. The greater the torque the greater the force. This tool is equipped with a clutch that disengages the drill’s drive when the tool reaches a specified amount of torque. Different type of materials require different amount of torque.
DID YOU KNOW?

NOTICE After tightening the fastener, the tool’s impact mechanism starts to “bump”. The maximum impact duration should not exceed 1-2 seconds.

  • The working procedure is divided into two steps: 1. Driving and 2. Tightening (impact mechanism in action). The impact mechanism is activated as soon as the screwed connection is tight and therefore load is put on the motor (the power of the motor is transferred to steady rotary impacts).

  • Only apply the tool to the fastener (screw/bolt or nut) when the tool is switched off.
Rotating bits can slip off and damage the thread.

  • During operation begin with a slow rotation speed and increase it in the course of work if needed. The rotation speed can be controlled by pressing the trigger switch (A) to varying extents.

  • It is recommended to perform the first few turns manually by hand, key, or a screwdriver to ensure the correct driving of a fastener.

  • In case of working with threaded components, do not exert too much pressure on the tool. This can lead to the damage of the thread.

  • Before driving larger/longer fasteners it is advisable to drill a pilot hole.

  • Always hold the tool perpendicularly to the fastener. Holding it at an angle may cause slipping or jamming of the fastener.

7. Cleaning and Maintenance

NOTICE

  • Switch the tool off and detach the battery pack before cleaning, maintenance, storage, or transportation.
  • During cleaning do not immerse the tool in water or other liquids. Never hold the tool under running water.
7.1 Cleaning the housing
  • To clean the tool, wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
  • Clean the ventilation openings at the side cover of the tool with a soft brush. Clogged ventilation openings might cause the engine to overheat.
  • Wipe the tool dry after cleaning.
  • Never use corrosive detergents, wire brushes, abrasive scouters, metal or sharp utensils to clean the tool.

NOTICE The tool may be cleaned most effectively with compressed dry air. When doing so, do not exceed the pressure of 43 PSI (3 bar) and always wear safety goggles.

NOTICE Certain cleaning agents and solvents damage plastic parts. Some of these are: gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents that contain ammonia. Do not use cleaning agents and solvents containing these, as they can damage the tool.

7 .2 Re-tightening a loose chuck

The chuck (B) may become loose on the spindle and wobble abnormally. Also, the chuck’s screw may become loose, causing the chuck jaws to bind and prevent the jaws from closing.

To tighten a loose chuck and chuck screw (Fig. 12):

  1. Lock the trigger switch (A) by setting the forward/trigger off/reverse switch (E) in the center position (Fig. 5, B).
  2. Remove the battery pack from the tool.
  3. Set the torque adjustment ring (C) to the drill position.
  4. Remove the battery pack.
  5. Open the chuck (B) jaws.
  6. Insert a hex key (not provided) into the chuck (B) and tighten the chuck jaws securely by hand until a click sound is heard.
  7. Tap the hex key sharply with a mallet (not included) in a clockwise direction. This tightens the chuck (B) on the spindle.
  8. Open the chuck (B) jaws and remove the hex key.
  9. Use a cross-head screwdriver (not provided) to turn the chuck screw counterclokwise to tighten it.

NOTICE The chuck screw has a left-handed thread.
