FIGURE 4: Sample Listing Label (affixed beneath the Light Panel)
A sample listing label image is shown above. A metal listing label is attached to every European Home fireplace and contains important certification information. The listing label must not be removed from the fireplace.
WHEN ENCLOSING YOUR FIREPLACE THE USE OF NON-COMBUSTIBLE BUILDING MATERIALS IS REQUIRED. PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING.
COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS
Materials that can catch fire and burn are considered combustible. Any material that is made of, or faced with;wood, wood pulp, paper, plastic or any other material that can catch fire and burn is considered combustible.
Even though these materials may have been ‘flame-proofed’, made ‘fire- resistant’ or are ‘fire-rated’ they are considered combustible. Standard and Type X drywall are both combustible.
NON-COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS
A material is non-combustible when it cannot catch fire and burn. For example, materials made of stone, brick, concrete, tile, steel, plaster or glass are non-combustible.
Since this fireplace may be installed only outdoors, it is important to select materials that are suited for outdoor conditions.

INSTALLATION

LOCATING THE FIREPLACE
When locating your J Series Outdoor Gas Fireplace, you must ensure that the proper clearances to combustible materials are maintained and your fireplace must be installed outdoors, NOT indoors. The fireplace may be installed unsheltered but wind may cause a flame outage and/or excessive sooting. If enclosed, or sheltered, the enclosure must be: a. an enclosure with walls on all sides but NO overhead cover; or

a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover but NO MORE THAN TWO side walls; or

European Home JVF40H Outdoor Gas Fireplace -FIREPLACE
1b. a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and three side walls, as long as 30 percent or more of the horizontal periphery of the enclosure is permanently open.
– 25% total area completely open.
– 30% of remaining wall area is open and unrestricted.
– Screens only count for 40% of the total open area on windows.

GAS INSTALLATION

Note
The J Series Outdoor Gas Fireplace is shipped from the factory for use with natural gas.
A kit to convert the fireplace to propane (lP) is available. The conversion must be performed by a qualified service person. Contact your local gas supplier. Installation guide located in Appendix A
This product must be installed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
The installation must conform with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, with the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 /NFPA 54; National Fuel Gas Code; Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, CSA B149.1; or Propane Storage and Handling Code, CSA B149.2, as applicable.
The fireplace and its individual shutoff valve must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa).
INSTALL THE NATURAL GAS SUPPLY
The natural gas supply piping must have a separate gas shutoff valve and a capped, 1/8” pipe tapping upstream of the valve for the purpose of reading pressure. A service shutoff valve must be placed within six feet of the fireplace gas control valve. Verify the gas pressure using the upstream 1/8” pipe tap.
The lower side of the control box is open 2” x 14”(50 mm x 355 mm) and allows for an easy gas supply connection to the gas valve. The gas valve provides a 1/2” male flare fitting. This is located on the left face of the single sided unit and either side on the see-through unit.
PROPANE (LP) CYLINDER ENCLOSURE
If you are planning to operate your J Series Outdoor Gas Fireplace using a portable propane cylinder, it must be placed in an enclosure that meets the following specifications: A) One side of the enclosure must be left open and a chain located 12 “ (30.5 cm)above the floor of the enclosure must span the opening to prevent the tank from tipping. One end of the chain should be attached with a hook for easy removal of the tank.
B) Two ventilation openings must be provided in the sidewalls of the enclosure (Figure 12), located within 5 “ (127 mm) of the top of the enclosure, equally sized, spaced at a minimum of 90 degrees (1.57 rad), and unobstructed. The opening(s) must have a total free area of not less than 1 square inch per lb. (14.2 cm 2 /kg) of stored fuel capacity.
The floor of the enclosure must be located 2 “ (50 mm) above the ground and must be non-combustible. The minimum width and the depth of the enclosure must be 13 “x 13” (330mm x 330mm) Ventilation openings must be provided at floor level of the enclosure and must have a total free area of not less than 1/2 in 2 /lb. (7.1 cm 2 /kg) of stored fuel capacity. If ventilation openings at floor level are in a sidewall, there must be at least two openings. The bottom of the openings must be 1 “ (25.4 mm) or less from the floor level and the upper edge no more than 5 “ (127 mm) above the floor level. The openings must be equally sized, spaced at a minimum of 90 degrees (1.57 rad) and unobstructed. Every opening must have minimum dimensions so as to permit the entrance of a 1/8 “ (3.2 mm) diameter rod. Ventilation openings in sidewalls must not communicate directly with other enclosures of the fireplace. The propane cylinder enclosure MuST be isolated from the fireplace but can be part of the fireplace enclosure. See the example below.

ENCLOSING THE FIREPLACE/FRAMING
All enclosures for the JVF-40H fireplace require an air inlet and an air outlet. These openings in the enclosure must allow for the free flow of air through the unit.
The air inlet opening must be located on the same side of the fireplace as the gas control and should be located near the bottom of the fireplace. This is the left side when facing the single sided model and either side on the see- through. The air outlet can be on any vertical surface above the unit. The air inlet opening and the air outlet opening must be covered with a grill that has a free area of at least 36 in2 (233 cm2). The grill opening should be small enough to prevent bugs, mice and other pests from accessing the enclosure. When choosing a grill, give consideration to its rain and/or weather resistance to ensure that as little weather gets inside the enclosure as possible. A small hood at the top of the grill is recommended for improved weather resistance. Make sure these hoods and grills do not effect the air intake.
IMPORTANT
From the air inlet to the controls side of the unit, there must be a chase baffle must be built to prevent air from passing around the back or top of the unit: Figure 13 below.

Accumulated rain water will drain from a 7/8” (22.3mm) opening in the center rear of the fireplace bottom. This opening must not be blocked see Figures 19 & 20 for drain placement. The water which runs through this opening will accumulate in the base of your enclosure and must be allowed to drain away from the enclosure. An appropriate length of 11/2” – 2” PVC pipe installed at the base of the enclosure which runs down and out, is recommended. These openings must be checked for blockage periodically.

The JVF-40H fireplace can come with one of two burners: a Campfire Burner or a linear Burner.
As you can see in the below images, the campfire kit only comes with a log set and the flames are higher and towards the center of the unit while the linear burner comes with fireglass or stones to cover the burner and the lights. Both fireplaces produce the same BTu and need the same pressures for Natural Gas and Propane.
