Product Information

The DS8178A is a digital scanner manufactured by Zebra Technologies. It is a high-performance scanner designed for quick and accurate scanning of barcodes. The scanner features a scan window, scan trigger, battery LED, scan LEDs, and a beeper. It also has an aiming feature that helps users to align the scanner correctly.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Charging: Before using the scanner, it is recommended to fully charge the battery/PowerCap. Use the provided power cap insertion/removal tool to insert or remove the battery/power cap. Ensure that the firmware version is CAACXS00-004-R00 or later for PowerCap usage.
  2. Cradle Insertion: To insert the scanner into the cradle, unlock the cradle by sliding the lock switch to the unlock position. Place the scanner into the cradle and lock it by sliding the lock switch to the lock position.
  3. Cradle Cable Connection: Connect the cradle to the host device using the appropriate cable. Insert one end of the cable into the host port on the cradle and the other end into the host port on the host device.
  4. Connect Host Interface: Depending on your configuration, use the appropriate interface cable to connect the scanner to the host device. The cable will automatically detect the host interface type and use the default setting. If the default setting does not meet your requirements, you can scan another host bar code to change the setting.

Troubleshooting

The digital scanner not working

  • No power to the scanner
    Check system power; ensure battery/PowerCap is charged. If using PowerCap, ensure the firmware version is CAACXS00-004-R00 or later.

  • Digital scanner disabled
    Ensure that the correct host interface cable is used.

Digital scanner decoding bar code, but data not transmitting to host

  • The host interface is not configured properly Scan appropriate host parameter bar codes.
  • Interface cable is loose Ensure all cable connections are secure.
  • Invalid ADF rule Program the correct ADF rules.
  • Digital scanner not paired to cradle Scan cradle pairing bar code.

Digital scanner not decoding barcode

  • Digital scanner not programmed for bar code type
  • Ensure the scanner is programmed to read the type of bar code being scanned.
  • The bar code is unreadable Ensure the bar code is not defaced; try scanning a test bar code of the same bar code type.

Warnings for Use of Wireless Devices

CAUTION Please observe all warning notices with regard to the usage of wireless devices.

Safety in Hospitals

  • Wireless devices transmit radio frequency energy and may affect medical electrical equipment.
  • Wireless devices should be switched off wherever you are requested to do so in hospitals, clinics or health care facilities. These requests are designed to prevent possible interference with sensitive medical equipment.

Pacemakers
Pacemaker manufacturers recommended that a minimum of 15cm (6 inches) be maintained between a handheld wireless device and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with independent research and recommendations by Wireless Technology Research.

Persons with Pacemakers:

  • Should ALWAYS keep the device more than 15cm (6 inches) from their pacemaker when turned ON.
  • Should not carry the device in a breast pocket.
  • Should use the ear furthest from the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference
  • If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn OFF your device.

Other Medical Devices
Please consult your physician or the manufacturer of the medical device, to determine if the operation of your wireless product may interfere with the medical device.

  • International

  • Europe – Handheld Devices
    To comply with EU RF exposure requirements, this device must be operated in the hand with a minimum separation distance of 0 cm or more from a person’s body. Other operating configurations should be avoided.

  • US and Canada

    • Co-located Statement
      To comply with FCC RF exposure compliance requirements, the antenna used for this transmitter must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other transmitter/antenna except those already approved in this filling.

    • Handheld Devices
      This device was tested for typical body-worn or handheld operation. Use only Zebra-tested and approved belt clips, holsters, and similar accessories to ensure FCC Compliance. The use of third-party belt clips, holsters, and similar accessories may not comply with FCC RF exposure compliance requirements and should be avoided.

CAUTION
To satisfy US and Canadian RF exposure requirements, a transmitting device must operate with a minimum separation distance of 0 cm or more from a person’s body.

LED Devices
For LED devices that have been evaluated to IEC 62471 and comply with the Exempt Risk Group, no product labeling requirements apply. However, the following statement is required to comply with US and international regulations:

Batteries and PowerCaps

Taiwan – Recycling
EPA (Environmental Protection Administration) requires dry battery producing or importing firms in accordance with Article 15 of the Waste Disposal Act are required to indicate the recycling marks on the batteries used in sales, giveaways, or promotions. Contact a qualified Taiwanese recycler for proper battery disposal.

Battery and PowerCap Information

CAUTION
Risk of explosion if battery/PowerCap is replaced by an incorrect type. Dispose of batteries/PowerCaps according to instructions.

The model DS8178A may be used with either a rechargeable Battery Pack or a rechargeable capacitor-based PowerCap. Zebra-approved rechargeable battery packs and PowerCaps are designed and constructed to the highest standards within the industry. Use only Zebra-approved batteries or PowerCaps. Accessories that have charging capability are approved for use with the following battery and PowerCap models: Battery Part Number 82-176890-01 (3.6 Vdc, 2500 mAh); PowerCap Part Number AS-000231-01 (3.7V, 2.0A).

However, how long a battery pack or PowerCap can operate or be stored before needing replacement? Many factors affect the actual life cycle of a battery pack or PowerCap, such as heat, cold, harsh environmental conditions, and severe drops. When battery packs or PowerCaps are stored over six months, some irreversible deterioration in overall battery quality may occur. Store batteries and PowerCaps at half of the full charge in a dry, cool place, removed from the equipment to prevent loss of capacity, rusting of metallic parts, and electrolyte leakage.

When storing batteries for one year or longer, the charge level should be verified at least once a year and charged to half of the full charge. Replace the battery pack or PowerCap when a significant loss of run time is detected. The standard warranty period for all Zebra batteries and PowerCaps is 1 year, regardless if the battery or PowerCap was purchased separately or included as part of the barcode scanner. Battery and PowerCap Safety Guidelines
The area in which the units are charged should be clear of debris and combustible materials or chemicals. Particular care should be taken when the device is charged in a noncommercial environment.

  • Follow battery/PowerCap usage, storage, and charging guidelines found in the user’s guide.
  • Improper battery/PowerCap use may result in a/ fire, explosion, or other hazard.
  • To charge the mobile device battery, the battery and charger temperatures must be between +32ºF and + 104ºF (0ºC and +40ºC).
  • Do not use incompatible batteries/PowerCaps and chargers. Use of an incompatible battery/PowerCap or charger may present a risk of fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazard. If you have any questions about the compatibility of a battery or a charger, contact Zebra support.
  • For devices that utilize a USB port as a charging source, the device shall only be connected to products that bear the USB-IF logo or have completed the USB-IF compliance program.
  • Do not disassemble or open, crush, bend or deform, puncture, or shred.
  • Severe impact from dropping any battery-operated device on a hard surface could cause the battery to overheat.
  • Do not short-circuit a battery or allow metallic or conductive objects to contact the battery/PowerCap terminals.
  • Do not modify or remanufacture, attempt to insert foreign objects into the battery/PowerCap, immerse or expose to water or other liquids, or expose to fire, explosion, or other hazard.
  • Do not leave or store the equipment in or near areas that might get very hot, such as in a parked vehicle or near a radiator or other heat source. Do not place the battery/PowerCap into a microwave oven or dryer.
  • Battery/PowerCap usage by children should be supervised.
  • Please follow local regulations to promptly dispose of used rechargeable batteries/PowerCaps.
  • Do not dispose of batteries/PowerCaps in fire.
  • Seek medical advice immediately if a battery has been swallowed.
  • In the event of a battery leak, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. If contact has been made, wash the affected area with large amounts of water and seek medical advice.
  • If you suspect damage to your equipment or battery/PowerCap, contact Zebra support to arrange for an inspection.

Radio Frequency Interference Requirements – FCC
