tynetec FM0885 Companion Mini Epilepsy Monitor

Product Information

The 869MHz Companion Mini Trusted Technology Epilepsy Monitor is a device designed to monitor the movements of a user while they are in bed. It is specifically developed for individuals with epilepsy to provide safety and peace of mind. The Companion Mini is equipped with a bed sensor that detects excessive movements and triggers an alarm call if necessary. It has a battery back-up to ensure continuous operation, and it communicates wirelessly with the Connect-iT unit.

The Connect-iT unit serves as the central hub for the Companion Mini system. It maintains charge for the battery back-up and facilitates radio communications between the Companion Mini and other devices. The Connect-iT unit has LED indicators to display
the status of the system.

Positioning

To install the Companion Mini bed sensor, place it under the mattress beneath the user. Since bed types and mattresses vary, it is recommended to perform multiple tests during installation to determine the optimal position. For increased sensitivity, you can place the foam block provided in the carton under the Companion Mini. Further adjustments can be made using the Profile Editor software, which can be downloaded for free from Alert-it.

Normal Operating Mode:

To ensure the battery back-up remains charged, keep the Connect-iT unit plugged into the mains supply. The POWER LED on the Connect-iT unit should be steadily lit green. The MONITOR LED should flash red every 8 seconds to indicate that radio communications between the Companion Mini and Connect-iT are functioning correctly.

Alarm Condition:

If the bed sensor detects excessive movements in the bed for more than 15 seconds, an alarm call will be transmitted. The epilepsy monitor will automatically reset itself and return to normal operation after 1 minute. The delay before the alarm period can be adjusted using the Alert-it Profile Editor software.

Companion Mini Low Battery Condition:

When the bed sensor battery is low, the MONITOR LED on the Connect-iT unit will flash red every second. It is important to replace the 2 x AAA Alkaline batteries inside the Companion Mini as soon as possible. If the bed sensor battery becomes very low, the MONITOR LED will flash red every second, and the ALARM LED will start flashing red every 2 seconds.

Connect-iT Low Battery Condition:

If the Connect-iT unit’s battery becomes low, it will automatically report this to the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) or the local Manager. In such cases, the complete Connect-iT unit must be returned to Tynetec for battery replacement.

Maintenance:

To clean the device, use a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Take care to avoid getting any liquid into the micro-USB connector.

Disposal:

Do not dispose of the product with normal household waste. The epilepsy monitor is suitable for disposal within the waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) recycling scheme. Please recycle it where facilities exist. For recycling/disposal advice, consult your local authority or contact your supplier.

Warning:

The Connect-iT unit contains a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride and a Lithium battery. Tampering with these batteries may cause damage and create a fire hazard. Do not incinerate the batteries.

Positioning

The Companion Mini bed sensor should be placed under the mattress beneath the user. Due to the wide variety of bed types and mattresses it is advised to perform several tests during installation to establish the best position. The foam block provided in the carton can be placed under the Companion Mini to increase sensitivity. Further adjustments can be made using the Profile Editor software available as a free download from Alert-it.

Normal Operating Mode

To maintain charge of the battery back-up the Connect-iT unit should be left plugged-in to the mains supply.
The POWER LED should be lit steady green.
The MONITOR LED on the Connect-IT unit should flash red every 8 seconds to indicate radio communications are OK between the Companion Mini and the Connect-iT.

Alarm Condition

An alarm call is transmitted if the bed sensor detects excessive movements in the bed for a period greater than 15 seconds. The epilepsy monitor will reset itself and return to normal operation 1 minute after an alarm.
Note: this delay before alarm period can be changed using the Alert-it Profile Editor software.

Companion Mini Low Battery Condition

When the bed sensor battery gets low the MONITOR LED on the Connect-iT unit will flash red every second. Replace the 2 x AAA Alkaline batteries inside the Companion Mini as soon as possible.
If bed sensor battery gets very low the MONITOR LED will flash red every second and the ALARM LED will start to flash red every 2 seconds.

Connect-iT Low Battery Condition

If the mains supply fails the battery backup will maintain operation for about 24 hours.
When running on the battery backup, the POWER LED will turn from solid green to a green flash every 4 seconds. When the battery backup begins to get low the POWER LED will flash green every second.
When the battery backup gets very low the MONITOR LED will begin to flash red every second and the ALARM LED will flash red every 2 seconds.
It will take about 12 hours to fully recharge the battery backup when the mains supply is restored.

Telecare Transceiver Low Battery Condition

If the Telecare transceiver battery becomes low this will be reported automatically to the Alarm Receiving Centre
(ARC) or the local Manager. The complete Connect-iT unit must be returned to Tynetec for battery replacement.

Out of Range Notification (Reach IP)

The Reach IP can monitor all radio peripheral devices to determine whether they have been damaged or removed from an installation. Should the Reach IP be unable to detect a device’s heartbeat it will automatically generate a “radio out of range” notification. Firstly, investigate if there’s a genuine reason for the alert, if not, arrange for the peripheral device to be replaced immediately.
Note: the “Radio out of range timer” can be set from 30 hours to 99999 hours in Pulse CMP. “Radio supervision” can be disabled by unchecking the tick box associated with each peripheral device in Pulse CMP.

Maintenance

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Avoid getting any liquid into the micro-USB connector.

Disposal

Waste electrical products should not be disposed of with normal household waste. The epilepsy monitor is ideally suited for disposal within the waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE)  recycling scheme. Please recycle where facilities exist. Check with your local authority or contact your supplier for recycling/disposal advice.

Warning

The Connect-iT unit contains a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride and a Lithium battery.
If tampered with the batteries may be damaged and create a fire hazard. Do not incinerate.

Telecare Radio ID
The epilepsy monitor includes a radio transceiver to communicate with the Reach IP, XT2 or Carer Response.

The Radio ID is a 10-digit code printed on the Connect-iT label…

Alert-it Profile Editor Software

Download free software from www.alert-it.co.uk/support Connect the Companion Mini to your PC using the micro USB lead provided in the carton to adjust the sensitivity and delay before alarm.

Installation

  1. Turn on the Companion Mini by pressing the TEST button with a pen tip. The ALARM light will flash green for 60 seconds during the power-up test mode.
Note: an alarm call will be transmitted when any movement is detected during the test mode.

  2. Turn on the Connect-iT unit by pressing the PAIR button with a pen tip. The POWER light will flash green when its running on its battery back-up.
Connect the P171 adapter and plug into the mains supply. The POWER light should now be lit steady green.
During normal operation the MONITOR light should flash green every 8 seconds when a transmission is received from the Companion Mini.

  3. Put the Companion Mini into test mode and place it under the mattress in a central location. Pat the bed to simulate a seizure and check the MONITOR and ALARM lights flash red on the Connect-iT unit.

  4. If movement is not detected due to the mattress thickness or density, then the foam pad provided in the box can be used to increase sensitivity. Use the sticky pads to secure the foam to the bottom of the Companion Mini. Put the Companion Mini back into test mode and place it back under the mattress and re-test.

  5. If movement is still not detected, then the sensitivity may need to be increased by connecting the Companion Mini to a PC using the Profile Editor software.

  • How to test the Epilepsy Monitor
Pat the bed with constant rhythm for at least 15 seconds until the MONITOR light comes on steady red and the ALARM light flashes red on the Connect-iT unit.
An epilepsy alarm signal will be transmitted.
After approx. 1 minute the epilepsy alarm will reset itself i.e. the red lights will go out and the MONITOR light will flash green every 8 seconds.

  • How to adjust the Sensitivity
The default sensitivity setting should be suitable for detecting spasms in a domestic bed.
The sensitivity can be changed using the Alert-it Profile Editor software.

  • How to adjust the Time Delay
This is the time for which the distress condition must occur before an alarm is transmitted. The delay can be changed using the Alert-it Profile Editor software.
The delay should be set to minimize false alarms during normal movement. The default time delay of 15 seconds will normally be a good compromise between speed of detection and avoiding false alarms during nocturnal restlessness or coughing, turning, etc.

  • How to turn the Epilepsy Monitor off
If the epilepsy alarm is being taken out of service and stored for a prolonged period, then it should be powered-down as described below.
Switch off and disconnect the mains adapter from the Connect-iT unit.
Press and hold the small white button on the bottom face of the Connect-iT unit, the POWER light will go steady green and the MONITOR light will go steady red, after about 3 seconds a series of tones will sound and the MONITOR light will go out. Keep the button pressed until the ALARM light goes red and the POWER light flashes green. Release the button and the Connect-iT unit is now switched off.
Remove the batteries from the Companion Mini during storage.
