How to prevent components from falling

How to prevent components from falling
To prevent the components from falling, connect a lanyard to:

  • Nut
    The plate attached to the nut rotates freely. This ensures that the lanyard attached to it does not tangle up. This makes assembly and disassembly of the nut easier.

  • Shackle body

  • Bolt

  • Spring pin

Attach the other end(s) of the lanyards to an anchoring point. Or link the nut, pin, and spring pin to the shackle body and link the shackle body to an anchoring point to prevent the assembly from falling.

Example :

Position nut

The nut must be installed as shown in the picture below.

If the nut is accidentally mounted the other way round, with the plate close to the shackle body, this does not provoke a safety hazard, but the plate might rotate less easily. See the below picture.
How to prevent components from falling

The threaded section of the shackle pin is long enough to guarantee full engagement with the threading of the nut in both situations.
In a regular lifting operation, the nut does not bear any load at all, it just keeps the shackle pin in place. To attach the components to an anchoring point, a standard lanyard with appropriate strength can be used. Many different styles and brands are available in the market that can be used for this purpose.

Instructions for use and periodical inspection

Select the correct WLL of the Green Pin® Catch Shackle BN for your application. If extreme circumstances or shock loading may occur, this must be taken into account when selecting the correct shackle size.

The Green Pin® Catch Shackle BN should be inspected before use and during your periodical inspections to ensure that:

  • the lanyards are connected to the appropriate components, to prevent them from falling;
  • all markings are legible;
  • the body and pin are both of the same brand and type;
  • the body and pin are both of the correct size;
  • never use a Green Pin® Catch Shackle BN without a securing pin;
  • the pin, nut, cotter pin, or any other locking system cannot vibrate out of position;
  • the threads of the pin and the body are undamaged;
  • the body and the pin are not distorted or unduly worn;
  • the body and pin are free from nicks, gouges, cracks, and corrosion;
  • shackles may not be heat treated as this may affect their WLL;
  • never modify, repair or reshape a shackle by machining, welding, heating, or bending as this will affect the WLL;
  • the plate on the nut needs to rotate freely. This makes the assembly and disassembly of the nut easier.

Inspection

The Green Pin® Catch Shackle BN must be regularly inspected in accordance with the safety standards given in the country of use. This is required because the products in use may be affected by wear, misuse, overloading, etc. which may lead to deformation and alteration of the material structure.
Inspection should take place at least every six months and more frequently when the shackles are used in severe operating conditions.
