OPERATION
Intended Use
You can finally work on all those awkward corners, edges, gaps, recesses or other hard to reach areas with this power file. The power file is equipped with 2 interchangeable grinding arms (8 mm or 13 mm width). The machine is ideal for grinding, filing, removing rust of a variety of materials like wood, ceramic, metal, plastic or glossy surfaces. With the speed regulator you can select the correct speed required for the item you are working on.
Please read the safety instructions!
These instructions will make it easier for you to handle the device appropriately and help prevent misunderstandings and possible damage or injury.
Before first Use
Remove the angle grinder and the accessories for the packaging. Keep packaging material out of reach of children. There is risk of suffocation!
Assembling
The power file is delivered partly assembled to ensure transport. The power file is equipped with 2 interchangeable grinding arms of 8 and 13 mm width.
For assembling the power file, proceed as follows:
- Insert the regulating turn knob (7) from the right side into the sanding arm holder (10) and the black spring from the left side into the provided notch.
- Attach the sanding arm (3) to the holder and tighten with the regulating turn knob. In the sanding arm you will find the suitable thread for the turn knob.
- Lightly press the sanding arm holder and the sanding arm together in order to tighten the regulating turn knob.
Installing/Replacing the Sanding Belt
Disconnect the unit from power mains.
-
Slacken the sanding arm by folding the tensioning lever (8) forward.
-
Insert the sanding belt (11) into the housing. Guide the sanding belt behind the cover (5). Please follow the rotating direction arrow on the sanding belt and the cover. The direction arrows have to be in the same direction.
-
Tension the sanding belt with the tensioning lever (8) by turning back.
-
Start up the power file at the lowest speed – speed regulator (2) must be set to position 1 – and adjust the position of the sanding belt by turning the regulating turn knob (7). Adjust the sanding belt in such a way that the belt does not walk off the front pulley to one side.
Turning ON and OFF
- The power file is turned on with the ON/OFF switch (1). When the switch is pressed, the power file starts up and runs with the preset speed on the speed regulator (2).
- To turn the power file off, release the ON/OFF switch (1). For continuous use, the switch can be locked in place with the locking button (9). Press the ON/OFF switch and than press the locking button. Now the ON/OFF switch is locked and can be released.
- To release the locking, first press the ON/OFF switch (1). The locking button lightly jumps out of the housing and the power file turns off after releasing the ON/OFF switch.
Regulating the Speed
The speed of the power file can be regulated with the speed regulator (2) in order to match the material which is to be machined.
- Turn the regulator to the position 1 for low speed (1070 m/min1) and to the position 6 for max. speed (1650 m/min-1).
- During operation it is also possible to infinitely adjust the speed with the sped regulator.
Dust Collection Bag/Dust Extractor/Vacuum Cleaner
Please Notice! Grinding some material can lead to the formation of hazardous or explosive dust. During operation a dust extractor or a suitable vacuum cleaner should be attached, or at least the included dust collection bag (4) should be used.
-
For attaching the suction hose of a dust extractor or vacuum cleaner, use the included adaptor (6).
-
Attach the adaptor to the extraction flange of the housing. The adaptor is equipped with bayonet lock. Firmly push the adaptor with the black rubber ring to the extraction flange and turn clockwise to lock.
-
Connect the adaptor to the vacuum hose or the included durst collection bag (4). To attach the dust collection bag, squeeze the spring wire rings together and slide the spring wire rings over the adaptor. To detach the dust collection bag, press the spring wire rings together and remove the dust bag.
Attaching and Replacing the Sanding Arm
- First, unplug from power mains. Slacken the tension of the sanding belt by folding down the tensioning lever and remove the sanding belt as described in the chapter “Installing/Replacing the Sanding Belt”.
- Swing the tensioning lever back to extend the sanding arm all the way. Loosen the regulating turn knob until the sanding arm is free. Slide it out of the unit and insert the other sanding arm.
- Tighten the sanding arm with the regulating turn knob until the arm is straight in the unit. Make sure the spring is placed correctly between the sanding arm and the sanding arm holder.
- Fold the tensioning lever forward and insert the suitable sanding belt. Tension the sanding belt with the tensioning lever and switch on the power file. Finally adjust the sanding belt with the regulating turn knob.
Hints on the safe use of the Power File
- If possible, place the work pieces in a vice or secure them to a workbench or other solid base.
- When using the file on wood, it should be used in the direction of the fibres whenever possible to avoid ripping fibres from the wood.
- If very wide work pieces are machined, it is advisable to align the machine in such a way that it covers as much of the surface as possible at the same time to achieve a smooth and level surface.
- Before each use, make sure the sanding belt is free from damage and can move freely. The edges of the belt should not be frayed and the seam must be in good condition.
- The unit should be clean and there should be no parts missing.
- If you hear unusual sounds during operation or abnormal vibration occurs, stop operating the unit and check the correct fit of the sanding belt and the sanding arm. If the fault cannot be remedied, have the power file checked by a professional.
Maintenance and Cleaning
- First unplug from power mains before cleaning or maintaining the unit.
- Regularly brush or wipe the dust off the unit. Please keep in mind that the dust may be hazardous.
- For cleaning the housing use a moist cloth, or for harmless dust, a stiff brush.
- Do not immerse the machine in liquids of any kind and do not allow liquids to enter the machine.
- The unit does not require further maintenance. Do not disassemble it and do not attempt to repair it yourself. In the case of questions or problems, please turn to our customer support department.
- Enclosed in delivery you will find a pair of carbon brushes. If the machine works powerless and sparking occurs at the brushes, it may be a sign that the carbon brushes are used up and have to be replaced. Have the carbon brushes replaced by a professional only or return the unit to the Westfalia customer support department. Do not open the housing of the power file. Do not try to repair it yourself.
