MIC-5 Insulation Resistance Meters

We appreciate your having purchased our insulation resistance meter. The  MIC- 5is a modern, high-quality measuring device, which is easy and safe to use. Please acquaint yourself with the present manual in order to avoid measuring errors and prevent possible problems related to the operation of the meter.

  • The device meets the EMC requirements for portable battery-powered devices. Additionally, it meets the requirements for industrial equipment used in industrial environments, in accordance with EN 613261:2013, taking into account temporary, self-resolving deterioration or loss of their functions.
  • The manufacturer reserves the right to introduce changes in the design, accessories, and technical data of the device.

Safety

The meter has been designed to realize measurements whose results determine the safety conditions of the installation. Therefore, in order to provide conditions for correct operation and the correctness of the obtained results, the following recommendations must be observed:

  • Before you proceed to operate the meter, acquaint yourself thoroughly with the present manual and observe the safety regulations and specifications determined by the producer.

  • The meter has been designed for the purpose of insulation resistance and connection resistance measurements, as well as direct and alternative voltage measurements. Any other application than those specified in the present manual may result in damage to the device and constitute a source of danger for the user.

  • The device must be operated solely by appropriately qualified personnel with relevant certificates that entitle them to realize measurements of electric installation. Operation of the meter realized by unauthorized personnel may result in damage to the device and constitute a source of danger for the user.

  • The device should be used with guards limiting the length of the test probe tips. Only then, the condition of the measurement category is met.

  • When using the device, the user must not put his/her fingers outside the protective guards of the meter. The guards define the safe distance from L1 and L2 probe tips.

  • The device must not be applied to the network and equipment within premises of special conditions, e.g. in a dangerous atmosphere with regard to explosion or fire.

  • It is unacceptable to operate the following:
    A damaged meter that is completely or partially out of order,
    A meter with damaged cable insulation,
    A meter is stored for an excessive period of time in disadvantageous conditions (e.g. excessive humidity).
    If the meter has been transferred from a cool to a warm environment with a high level of relative humidity, do not realize measurements until the meter has been warmed up to the ambient temperature (approximately 30 minutes)

  • Before proceeding to a connection resistance and insulation resistance measurement, make sure the object under investigation has been disconnected from the power supply voltage.

  • During an insulation resistance measurement, it is unacceptable to disconnect the cables from the object under investigation before the measurement has concluded; otherwise, the capacity of the object will not be discharged, which gives rise to a danger of electric shock.

  • Do not operate a meter with an open or incorrectly closed battery (accumulator) compartment or power it from other sources than those specified in the present manual.

  • The meter’s inputs are electronically protected from power surge up to 660 V for 30 seconds.

  • Repairs may be realized solely by an authorized service point.

WARNING
Before each use, thoroughly inspect the insulation of the device, checking its wires for any damage (e.g. cracks, cuts, changes in structure or color). In case of discovering any faults, do not use the device and contact the service center.
The device complies with the following standards 61010-1, EN 61557-1, and EN 61557-2.
NOTE!
Voltage exceeding 600 V connected to the meter may result in its damage.
1.1 Safety symbols

**Measurements

**

3.1 Switching the tester ON and OFF
To turn ON the meter, shortly press the 10 buttons. To turn OFF the meter – press and hold the 10 buttons for approx. 2 sec.
3.2 Elimination of interferences
In order to effectively eliminate interferences, before the initial measurements, it is recommended to set the frequency of the power network for the given area (50 Hz or 60 Hz).Sonel MIC 5 Insulation Resistance Meters -

In order to change the frequency:

  • turn off the meter,
  •  turn on the meter by holding the pressed
    SEL button. The device ill display the frequency set at – 50 Hz (F50) or 60 Hz (F60).

3.3 Insulation resistance measurement
The device measures the insulation resistance providing a test voltage U to the tested insulation RX and measuring flowing current I at the side of the Riso- probe, and measured at the Riso input. In calculating the insulation resistance value, the meter uses the technical insulation measurement method (RX=U/I). The measurement voltage is selected between the two following values: 250 V or 500 V. The level of the output current of the converter is 1 mA. Activation of the current limitation is signaled by means of a continuous sonic alarm. The result of the measurement is then correct, but at the measurement terminals, there is a measurement voltage that is lower than the one adjusted before the measurement. The current limitation may occur particularly often in the first stage of the measurement due to the process of charging the capacity of the measured object. Sonel MIC 5 Insulation

The actual measurement voltage UISO is the the function of the measured insulation resistance RX (for the maximum measurement voltage)

  • Turn on the meter.

  • Use SEL button to select the measurement voltage.

  • Press START or wait 2 seconds for the triple beep, after which the meter enters the voltage measurement mode.

  • Connect the meter terminals to the tested object.

  • Trigger the measurement.

  • Press and hold the START button. The measurement ends after the button is released.

  • In order to maintain the measurement, hold the START button pressed and press SEL. The measurement will end after pressing the START again.

  • Read the measurement result.

  • During the measurement cycle, the buzzer emits a short single signal every five seconds, so it is possible to record the chronological characteristics of the resistance of the insulation under investigation.

  • During measurements, the AUTO-OFF is not active.

  • In the mode of voltage measurement, the AUTO-OFF countdown starts anew each time the voltage is changed by more than 5 V.

  • Once a measurement has been concluded, the last result is shown on the display along with the symbol. The last result of the measurement disappears if there is a voltage exceeding 20 V at the measurement terminals.

Additional information displayed by the meter
The measured object is under a voltage exceeding 20 V. The measurement is blocked. During 5 s a double-tone sonic signal is generated, and then the meter displays the voltage of the object. Disconnect the meter from the object (both terminals) immediately. There may be an attempt to discharge the object before the measurement – It will be signaled by means of the dis- played symbol. An attempt to dis-charge is undertaken if the voltage exceeds 20 V, but is lower than 100 V. a continuous double-tone sonic signal
The insulation resistance is too low, and the measurement is finished. The symbol is displayed, if:
after 10 seconds of starting the test, the measurement voltage has not reached the adjusted value,
an overvoltage caused by insulation breakdown is present during the measurement.

The measurement range has been exceeded.
** A warning regarding a high voltage at the terminals of the meter.
The object is discharged.
3.4 Connection resistance measurement**

  • Turn on the meter.

  • Press the SEL button to select resistance measurement on connections Con.

  • Press START or wait 2 seconds for the triple beep, after which the meter enters the resistance measurement mode.

  • Connect the meter terminals to the tested object. For R < 10 Ω, the symbol is displayed with a continuous acoustic signal

  • Read the measurement result.

The AUTO-OFF countdown starts anew each time the resistance is modified by at least 200 Ω.
Additional information displayed by the meter

a continuous double tonesonic signal
The measured object is under a voltage exceeding +7 V, lower than -1 V (with regard to RISO-), or exceeding 5 V AC. The measurement is blocked. Disconnect the meter from the object (both terminals) immediately. The measurement range has been exceeded.
3.5 Autozeroing
In order to eliminate the impact of the resistance of probes and test leads on the measurement result, the compensation (autozeroing) of resistance may be performed before the measurement.

  • Interconnect probes or cables connected to the probes.
  • Press START. If the measured resistance is <1000 Ω, then the result will be subtracted from the result of each subsequent measurement. Otherwise, the function is not activated. In order to disable the compensation, disconnect the probes or cables and press START or turn the meter OFF and then ON again.

3.6 Voltage measurement
Connect the terminals of the device to the measured voltage. The measurement is carried out after selecting one of the UISO voltages (without pressing the START button).

continuous double-tone sonic signal
The measured object is under a voltage exceeding 600 V (positive, negative, or alternate). Disconnect the meter from the object (both terminals) immediately.
3.7 Flashlight
The tester may light the measuring point,

  • Briefly press the button on the test probe L2.
  • Disabling the function:
    after pressing the  button again,
    after Auto OFF time elapsed.

3.8 Display backlight
The tester has the function of displaying the backlight.

  • The backlight turns on automatically when the flashlight or measurement function is activated.
  • Press and hold a longer button to test probe L2 in order to switch OFF the display backlight.
  • This function is also switched OFF after elapsing Auto OFF time.

  • Turn on the meter by pressing and holding the START button.

  • Software version will be displayed .

  • Press SEL, to display the hardware version .

  • To exit the version view, turn off the meter.

Replacing batteries

The meter is powered by two LR03 AAA batteries 1.5 V. After the meter is turned on, the level batteries or rechargeable batteries are displayed for fo2 seconds (100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%).

The charge of the batteries (rechargeable batteries)  is below 25%.
constant
The charge of the batteries (rechargeable batteries) precludes measurements, except for measurements of the voltage.

To replace the batteries:

  • disconnect the test probes from the measuring circuit,

  • use a tool or a coin to open the battery compartment (counter-clockwise direction),

  • remove the compartment,

  • replace the batteries, ensuring their correct polarity,

  • insert the container and close it (clockwise direction).

    After replacing and turning On, the meter will be activated in the power supply selection mode.

  • Use SEL button to select batteries (bAt) or rechargeable batteries (Acu).

  • Confirm the selection by pressing the START button.

 Cleaning and maintenance

  1. THE METER MUST BE DRY. Wipe the dampened meter.
  2. THE METER MUST BE USED AND STORED AT NORMAL TEMPERATURES. Extreme temperatures may shorten the life of electronic components and distort or melt plastic parts.
  3. THE METER MUST BE HANDLED CAREFULLY AND GENTLY. Dropping the meter may damage its electronic elements or the housing.
  4. THE METER MUST BE KEPT CLEAN. From time to time wipe the housing with a damp cloth. DO NOT use chemicals, solvents or detergents.
  5. USE ONLY NEW BATTERIES OF RECOMMENDED SIZE AND TYPE. Remove the old or discharged batteries from the meter to avoid leakage and damage.
  6. IF THE METER IS TO BE STORED FOR LONGER THAN 60 DAYS, remove the batteries and keep them separately.

The electronic system of the meter does not require maintenance.

Storage

During the storage of the device, the following recommendations must be observed:

  • protect the probes with a protective case,
  • make sure that the meter and accessories are dry,
  • when the devices must be stored for a prolonged period of time, batteries must be removed from the device.

Dismantling and disposal

Worn-out electric and electronic equipment should be gathered selectively, i.e. it must not be placed with the waste of another kind. Worn-out electronic quipment should be sent to a collection point in accordance with the law of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Before the equipment is sent to a collection point, do not dismantle any elements. Observe the local regulations concerning disposal of packages and used batteries.
