SAFETY NOTES AND OPERATION

  • Please note the following safety notes to avoid malfunctions, damage or physical injury:
  • Please read this manual carefully and use the device only according to this manual.
  • Dispose of used packaging material carefully or store it out of the reach of children. There is a danger of suffocation!
  • Take care not to injure yourself with the scythes or sickles and always protect yourself from injuries due to falling scythes or sickles.
  • Persons with limited physical, sensorial or mental abilities are not allowed to use the tool, unless they are supervised for their safety by a qualified person or are briefed by the responsible person how to use the tool.

Intended Use

  • To get sharp scythes and sickles with best cutting results, scythes and sickles should not be whetted, but only be thinned. With this thinning machine you can hone scythes and sickles sharp and clean in a few minutes only.

Before fist Use

  1. To mount the thinning machine on a suitable table or bench, use woodscrews. If you intend to use the thinning machine in a variety of locations, use a suitable screw clamp and place it in the square notch (1) in the housing.
  2. Before each use, oil the thrust block (10) and the balls.
  3. Unscrew the adjust screw (4) for the scythe rest (5). Place the scythe for test purposes on the rest and adjust the height of the scythe rest (5) to the height of the scythe.
  4. Lightly unscrew the hexagonal screw (3) lightly so the scythe can be placed without difficulties into the guide notch (9). Firmly hold the hexagonal nut of the pinch screw (6) with a suitable wrench in order to be able to unscrew the hexagonal screw (3). Make sure not to open the thrust block (10) too much.

The balls have to rub against the thrust block when turning the crank.

Operation

  1. Place the scythe (10) in the thinning machine, as shown in the picture. Lightly tilt the scythe and make sure the edge of the scythe is placed into the guide notch (9).
  2. Hold the scythe firmly with your left hand.
  3. Turn the crank (8) quickly and smartly to the right. Make sure the scythe is still placed into the guide notch (9).
  4. Slowly push the scythe forwards. Additionally the scythe is moved forwards bit by bit by the motion of the balls.
  5. Thin the edge of the scythe approx. 3 – 4 times with the thinning machine. Finally plan uneven spots of the edge with sharpening steel.

If you are trained in using the thinning machine you can completely tilt the scythe rest (5) and thin the tool free-hand. Please note that little practice is required for thinning, as for all manual tasks.

Maintenance, Cleaning and Storing

  • Grease the ball and the thrust block (10) from time to time with less oil or grease. The balls and honing disk are manufactured from the very best material and are practically unbreakable.
  • Clean the scythe resp. the sickle before thinning with the machine. If dirt gets into the honing disk and between the balls, effective thinning is not possible.
  • Protect the thinning machine from rain. Store the thinning machine in a dry place out of dust and dirt.
