Safety Notes
- Please read this manual carefully and use the unit only according to this manual.
- Dispose of used packaging material carefully or store it out of the reach of children. There is a danger of suffocation!
- The unit is not a toy and does not belong in the hands of children. Never leave the unit unsupervised when in use. Keep it out of reach of children or persons in need of supervision. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the unit.
- Make sure the voltage corresponds to the type label on the machine.
- The unit is designed for operation in altitudes of up to 2000 m above sea level.
- Thoroughly read and follow all safety warnings below and on the spindle sander.
- The spindle sander is intended for shaping and finish sanding of interior and exterior edges of wooden workpieces. Never use the spindle sander for wet sanding.
- Do not use damaged tools (table insert, sanding sleeve, rubber drum, washers).
- Use a dust connection system when possible.
- Wear personal protective equipment. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes when using the spindle sander. Take precautions when sanding painted surfaces. Do not sand lead-based paint. The contaminated dust could cause lead poisoning. When sanding paint protect your lungs and wear a dust mask or respirator. Do not allow unauthorized peoples to stay close to the working area.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while painted surfaces are sanded.
- Wear suitable clothing when using the spindle sander. Tight clothing will not get caught in moving parts easily.
- Make sure the tools fit precisely onto the spindle. Tools which do not precisely fit onto the spindle will turn irregularly, vibrate and can cause loss of control.
- Keep the power cable away from rotating parts. Please note the included General Safety Notes and the following safety notes to avoid malfunctions, damage or physical injury:
- Do not use the spindle sander close to combustible materials.
- Before operating the spindle sander, make sure all parts are correctly assembled.
- Check the condition of the spindle sander. If any part is missing, bent, or does not operate properly, replace the part before using the sander.
- Secure the workpiece. Support the workpiece securely on the table, and hold it with both hands.
- Please note the feed direction. Feed the workpiece gradually against the direction of rotation, onto the sanding sleeve.
- Always keep the hands out of the path of the sander and away from the sanding sleeve. Avoid hand positions where a sudden slip could cause the hand to move into the spindle. Do not reach underneath the workpiece or around the sanding sleeve while the spindle is rotating.
- When not in use and while changing the table inserts, sanding sleeves, rubber drums or other accessory, disconnect the power cable from mains. After switching off, disconnect the machine from mains.
- Wait for the spindle to stop rotating before performing maintenance. Never try to stop the spindle by hand.
- Make sure there are no nails or other foreign objects in the area of the workpiece to be sanded.
- Use only original replacement parts when servicing the spindle sander.
- Do not disassemble the machine and do not attempt to repair it yourself.
Operation
Before first Use
Unpack the spindle sander and check all parts for any damage in transit.
Dispose of packaging materials or store it out of reach of children. Plastic
bags etc. may become a deadly toy for children.
The spindle sander is supplied only partly assembled to ensure optimum
transport protection.
Intended Operation
- The spindle sander is designed for dry sanding only. The spindle sander is intended for shaping and finish sanding of interior and exterior edges of wooden workpieces.
- Never use the spindle sander for wet sanding. Do not sand any mineral.
Bench Mounting
For stationary operation the spindle sander can be mounted in a permanent
position on rigid work surface (e. g. workbench).
- Place the spindle sander on the workbench and drill four holes through the base of the machine.
- Secure the spindle sander into position on the workbench using large bolts, washers and nuts (not supplied).
Dust Extraction
For clean and safe work, we recommend using the spindle sander with a dust
extraction system.
- Attach the hose from the dust extraction system to the dust extraction port (3) and make sure it is securely fixed.
- Switch on the dust extraction system before turning on the spindle sander.
Selecting the Table Insert
Always make sure that the spindle sander is switched off and disconnected from
the power mains before making any adjustments.
Always use the correct table insert (10) with its matching sanding sleeve (6).
Failure to do so could result in pinched fingers.
Furthermore, the workpiece could be pulled down between the table insert and
the sanding sleeve.
Please note the table below to select the compatible tools for the right job
(table insert, sanding sleeve, rubber drum and washer).
Diameter of the Sanding Sleeve (6)| Diameter of the Table Insert (10)|
Diameter of the Rubber Drum (5)| Size of the Washer (13)
---|---|---|---
12.7 mm| 13 mm| ——| small
19 mm| 19 mm| 18| medium
25.4 mm| 26 mm| 25| medium
38 mm| 38 mm| 37| large
50 mm| 51 mm| 50| large
76 mm| 76 mm| 75| large
Use the large washer with the 76 mm (3″), 50 mm (2″), and the 38 mm (11/2″)
rubber drums. Use the medium washer with the 25.4 mm (1″) and 19 mm (3/4″)
rubber drums and use the small washer with the 13 mm sanding sleeve.
Make sure the sanding sleeve fit snugly into the central cut-out of the table
insert (10).
Please note that for the 13 mm sanding sleeve there is no matching rubber drum
included.
Fitting the Sanding Sleeve
All sanding sleeves (6) fit over its matching rubber drum (5).
- First place the bottom spindle disc (12) over the spindle (1).
- Select the appropriate tools in accordance with the table (table insert, rubber drum, sanding sleeve and washer).
- Fit the table insert (10) over the spindle and onto the bottom spindle disc (12). Ensure that the table insert (10) is flush with the table top (2).
- Fit the rubber drum (5) over the spindle (1). Slide the sanding sleeve (6) over the rubber drum (5). Place the washer (13) on the spindle (1).
- Fit the lock nut (14) on the spindle (1). Tighten the nut just enough to expand the rubber drum (5) against the sanding sleeve (6). To not overtighten the lock nut.
Hint: When the sanding sleeve is partly worn on one side, turn it upside
down. By doing this you will maximize the service life of the sleeve by using
the remaining grit.
Switching ON and OFF
The ON and OFF switches (7 and 8) are located on the front of the spindle
sander.
- To turn on the machine, press the green ON button marked with (–).
- To turn off the machine, press the red OFF button marked with (O).
Sanding
HINT: The spindle sander rotates in counter clockwise direction.
Make sure the table insert and the sanding sleeve fit together and are
securely tightened by the lock nut.
-
Wear safety equipment such as dust mask and safety goggles and turn on the dust extraction system.
-
Turn on the spindle sander with the ON switch (7) and allow the motor to reach full speed. Feed the workpiece gradually against the direction of rotation onto the sanding sleeve. Do not force the workpiece or apply excessive pressure. Only feed the workpiece against the direction of rotation otherwise the workpiece could be forced away from the rotating sanding sleeve and thrown sidewise.
-
After work, switch off the spindle sander with the OFF switch (8) and pull the power cable from the wall socket.
Hints:
The workpiece may become very hot during sanding. Therefore, allow the
workpiece to cool down while sufficiently.
Do not use damaged rubber drums or a completely worn sanding sleeve. This can
lead to excessive heat build up and damage the rubber drum.
Do not sand metal workpieces with the spindle sander. Sanding metal will cause
sparks that may ignite wood and dust particles on the spindle sander or around
the working area.
Maintenance, Cleaning and Storing
Maintenance, Cleaning and Storing
- To avoid injury, always pull the power plug before cleaning the machine. Do not disassemble the machine and do not try to repair it yourself. In the case of questions or problems please turn to our customer support department.
