Milkbar’s Premium Care breast pump has three modes – stimulation, expression, and a brand new power pump mode. Stimulation mode mimics the quick suckling action that a baby uses to stimulate milk let down. The expression mode uses a long drawnout suckling action to help draw out the milk. FIRST TIME USE

  • Disassemble the parts that come in contact with the breast and breast milk (Parts 02, 03, 04, 10)
  • Wash all of the parts in warm soapy water, using liquid household detergent.
  • Rinse each piece thoroughly with warm water for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Sterilise parts using:
~ Boiling water for 5 minutes,
~ A microwave or electric steam steriliser as per individual instructions,
~ A UV steriliser as per individual instructions,
~ Milton Solution as per individual instructions.
  • Please note Milton method of sterilising is not recommended for silicone parts

HOW TO CLEAN

  •  Rinse each part that comes into contact with the body and or milk with cool water immediately after pumping. This avoids build up of milk residue in the collection bottles and parts to avoid the growth of any bacteria.

  • Parts of the pump that come into contact with breastmilk are the silicone insert, diaphragm, breast shield body, and collection bottle. Wash all of them in warm soapy water using liquid household detergent.

  • Bottle parts such as nipple, nipple cover, disc collar and bottle lid will also need cleaning if used.

  • Use a dedicated cleaning sponge and bottle brush with a smaller brush to gently clean the nooks of the pump parts.
Wash the parts separately from other dishes such as pots and pans etc.

  • Rinse each piece thoroughly with warm water for 10 to 15 seconds. Sanitise parts using the sterilisation method of your choice after every use.

  • Always check parts for wear and tear.

CARE OF PARTS

  • Excessive and frequent boiling or exposure to heat may cause wear and tear to the plastic and silicone parts. These parts can be replaced via www.milkbarnewzealand.com.
  • Replace worn out or damaged parts immediately as this may affect the suction. Take particular care of the soft silicone inserts valve as this is very thin silicone and can be prone to damage during cleaning and use.
  • Parts may be washed in the dishwasher using the top rack only.
  • Place all clean parts on top of a paper towel or hang on a drying rack and allow to air dry.
  • Avoid using cloth towels, as they can carry germs and bacteria that may contaminate breastmilk.
  • Ensure all parts are completely dry before use; wet or damp parts will cause poor suction. Once parts are completely dry, reassemble the breast shield set.

CLEANING THE TUBES

  • The Milkbar Premium Care breast pump has a closed system therefore cleaning the tubes is not necessary. If you happen to see moisture in the tubes after pumping, remove the tubes from the cap and pump unit and allow to air dry until all moisture is gone. Do not attempt to use the pump if there is moisture in tubing, instead switch to the spare tubing included with your pump.

CLEANING THE PUMP UNIT

  • Sanitise your pump unit using any disinfectant wipes, by wiping off the tubing connector points from time-to-time. Wipe down the pump unit with a clean damp cloth or paper towel prior to each use.

SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Wash your hands prior to touching the breast pump and the breast pump parts.
  • Avoid touching the inner part of a collection bottle where the milk comes into contact.
  • Wash all parts that come into contact with your breasts and breast milk immediately after each use, to avoid the growth of any bacteria from milk residue.
  • Electrical pump units must never be exposed to water or other liquids for cleaning. It must not be sterilised in a microwave steriliser.
  • Please note if you are a mother who is infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), pumping breast milk will not reduce or remove the risk of transmitting the virus to your baby through your breast milk.

  • Recharge the pump unit once a month when it is in storage or not being used frequently.

BEFORE YOU START

  • Upon receiving your Milkbar Premium Care electric breast pump, connect the power adaptor to the pump unit and fully charge the pump unit. This will take around 3 to 4 hours. This step is crucial for getting the most out of the battery life of the lithium battery.
  • Inspect breast shields, silicone inserts and tubing connectors for damage before using your breast pump.
  • Ensure every part is attached properly and securely.
  • Check there is no moisture and any parts of the collection kit.

KEEP IN MIND

  • If at any time you feel pain and discomfort, or if you are not able to express milk, consult a breastfeeding specialist.
  • Do not try to express with a suction level that is too high, this may result in discomfort, pain and less milk output.
  • Low or no suction does not always mean something is wrong with your breast pump. Check all parts to ensure they are connected correctly and there is no moisture and any of the tubes or parts.

USING YOUR PUMP

  • Plug the power adaptor cord to the power outlet.
  • Place the breast shield over your breasts, while leaning forward slightly so that your nipple is properly centred in the suction kit. Make sure that you have the right size insert that matches your nipple size using the included guide.
  • When ready, long press the power button to switch the device on.
  • The device is turned on the timer will show 0 minutes and the stimulation phase will begin on suction level 1. The stimulation mode is designed to mimic your baby’s initial feeding motion and help trigger your milk ejection reflex (MER)/let down. You can adjust the suction as needed.
  • Milkbar Premium Care breast pump has a pumping motion design to massage, squeeze and suck just like an infant.
  • Once your milk is flowing and your let down has been stimulated, you may manually press the expression button to switch between stimulation and expression and back again.
  • Expression mode is set at suction level 1 by default – you may adjust the suction level according to your need. Expression mode is a slower motion with deeper sucking, which is how an infant sucks after the breasts have released a good flow of breast milk.
  • Adjust the suction level according to what’s comfortable for you, using the + or – buttons. The best way to find your preferred level is by increasing the suction until you feel discomfort, then decrease the level by one until you are comfortable. You should not feel any discomfort while using the Premium Care single electric breast pump.
  • When using the Power Pump mode the pump will cycle through the stimulation mode 5x before switching to expression mode for 5x. The stimulation level is set at 75mmHg and the expression level can be adjusted between level 1-9. This mode helps to trigger more letdowns and offers maximum stimulation for increasing milk supply.

AFTER EACH PUMPING SESSION

  • Label your container with the date and time the milk is expressed.
  • Name your container if breast milk is being given to a child care provider.
  • Refrigerate or chill your milk right after pumping unless using within 2 hours.

STORING BREAST MILK

  • Breast milk can be stored in a clean bpa-free plastic bottle with a tight fitting lid.
  • You can store your milk in our BPA-free Milkbar breast milk storage bags or other BPA-free storage bags.
  • Never store milk in the shelves of your refrigerator door, instead choose a spot at the very back of the fridge where the temperature is less affected by the door opening.

FREEZING BREAST MILK

  • Leave an inch of space at the top of a container as milk expands as it freezes.
  • Do not store milk in the door of your freezer, instead store milk at the back of your freezer.

THAWING AND WARMING BREAST MILK

  • Use the oldest stored breast milk first.
  • Breast milk does not need to be warmed – it can be served at room temperature or cold if preferred.
  • Gently swirl the container to mix the breast milk – it is normal for the milk to separate.
  • Do not shake breast milk.
  • If warming, swirl and test breast milk temperature by dropping some onto your wrist to make sure it is not too warm for your baby.
  • Thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator overnight or by running under warm water. You may also thaw milk in a container of warm water.
  • Never microwave breast milk. Microwaving creates hotspots which can burn your baby’s mouth.
  • Use thawed breast milk within 24hrs.

BREAST PUMP IS WORKING BUT NOT ABLE

  • You might be experiencing breast engorgement. TO EXPRESS MILK:

  • Try placing a warm towel on the breast or warm shower

  • Use alternating hand expression and gentle breast massage to help decrease swelling and improve the breast drainage.
Try doing this before starting a pumping session.

  • Do not pump more than 30 minutes to avoid hurting your breast. If you have engorged breasts, hold and massage gently while pumping milk to help with the milk flow.

DEVICE NOT POWERING ON

  • The power button must be long pressed to power on.
  • Check your power outlet by plugging in another electrical device.
  • Make sure the power outlet source is working.
  • Make sure that your power adapter is connected properly with the breast pump unit, and is the Milkbar adaptor.
  • If you are using a power adapter and your breast pump is still not turning on, try using the battery power instead of the plug
  • Make sure the battery is fully charged. If it works on the battery power, you might have a defective adapter.

MILK OVERFLOW PREVENTION
Milkbar is a closed system breast pump, designed with a barrier so that the milk will not backflow into the tube.
Below are some measures to avoid the potential milk backflow:

  • Adjust the suction to a lower level if your breast milk is relatively abundant.
  • Try releasing pressure between your breast and the flange if you notice that the milk is gathering inside the tunnel and is not streaming down to the milk collection bottle.
  • Do not overfill the milk collection bottle.
  • Rinse and clean the valves after each use.

PUMP UNIT / LITHIUM BATTERY PRECAUTIONS:

  • The Lithium battery is built-in and non-removable.
  • Do not try to disassemble it
  • Do not expose pump unit under direct sunlight or any other kind of heat source
  • Recharge the pump unit once a month when it is not frequently used
