DEAR SōLIS CUSTOMER

Selecting fine audio equipment such as the unit you’ve just purchased is only the start of your musical enjoyment. Now it’s time to consider how you can maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group want you to get the most out of your equipment by playing it at a safe level. One that lets the sound come through loud and clear without annoying blaring or distortion and, most importantly, without affecting your sensitive hearing.

Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing “comfort level” adapts to higher volumes of sound. So what sounds “normal” can actually be loud and harmful to your hearing. Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe level BEFORE your hearing adapts.

To establish a safe level:

  • Start your volume control at a low setting.
  • Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it comfortably and clearly, and without distortion.

Once you have established a comfortable sound level:   Set the dial and leave it there. Taking a minute to do this now will help to prevent hearing damage or loss in the future. After all, we want you listening for a lifetime.

We Want You Listening For a Lifetime

Used wisely, your new sound equipment will provide a lifetime of fun and enjoyment. Since hearing damage from loud noise is often undetectable until it is too late, this manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group recommend you avoid prolonged exposure to excessive noise.

Customer’s Record: The serial number of this product is found on its back cover. You should note the serial number of this unit in the space provided as a permanent record of your purchase to aid in identification in the event of theft of loss.

  • The Amplifier carries dangerous and potentially lethal voltages which can cause serious burns or electrocution. Never operate the unit with the cabinet taken apart.
  • The appliance coupler at the rear of this unit must be accessible for emergency power disconnect.
  • For safe operation and protection against fire hazard, replace fuse only with the same type and rating as specified in the SPECIFICATIONS section.
  • Do not attempt to install or remove any vacuum tubes unless this unit is turned Off and completely disconnected from the AC power outlet. Unit should be connected to the AC outlet and turned On only after all vacuum tubes have been correctly installed or replaced.
  • Before attempting to replace vacuum tubes, always allow installed tubes to cool before attempting to remove them. Hot tubes may cause burns or other injury if not allowed to cool down completely to room temperature before removal.
  • Always unplug the Amplifier from the AC outlet completely and wait for at least one hour before attempting to change tubes or open the cabinets for serving. Lethal voltages can remain in the exposed tube sockets, electronic parts and PCB right after the Amplifier is unplugged.
  • Contact your authorized SōLIS dealer or Spectra Customer Service hotline if you have any questions about installing or replacing vacuum tubes or operating this system. Refer servicing to your dealer or other qualified personnel.

AMPLIFIER LOCATION AND COOLING

  • The Amplifier is an open tube design and depends on natural convection airflow for proper cooling. To ensure adequate cooling, the Amplifier should be located in a position such that the airflow is not impeded or restricted.
  • The Amplifier should be placed on a level stable surface and should not be kept in an enclosed shelf. It is strongly recommended to leave at least 6 inches of clearance above and to both sides of it for best cooling.

CONNECTING THE SPEAKERS TO THE AMPLIFIER

  1. Insert the banana plugs of the Speaker Cables (included) fully into the respective SPEAKER OUTPUT TERMINALS located on the back of the Amplifier and Speaker boxes.
  2. The banana plugs/terminals are color coded. The red color denotes the ( + ) end and the black color denotes the ( – ) end. Make sure the correct colored plugs are inserted in the same color terminals on the main unit and on the speakers.

Notes:

  • Make sure that the power is turned off when connecting or disconnecting the Speakers.
  • Make sure that the Speakers are connected to the correct terminals on the Amplifier, otherwise the sound image will not appear midway between the left and right speakers but diffused and coming from all directions. There will also be a considerable loss of bass frequency response.
  • If you are connecting to a different speaker system other than the included one, be sure that the speaker impedance of the new speaker system must be 4 – 8 ohms and have a power rating up to 30W (rms) or higher.
  • The speakers are not magnetically shielded and may cause color distortion on the screen of some older TVs or video monitors. To avoid this, you may need to move the Speaker boxes further away from the TV or monitor if unnatural color shifts or image distortion occurs.
  • Contact your authorized SōLIS dealer or Spectra Customer Service hotline if you have any questions about connecting your speaker system to this Amplifier.

CONNECTING THE AC POWER CORD

Unwrap and fully extend the AC Power Cord (included) fully and connect it to any convenient household 120V~ 60Hz AC outlet securely.

Note: The product is designed to operate on normal 120V~ 60Hz AC only. Connecting this system to any other power supply could result in damage to the unit which is not covered by your warranty. This system is equipped with a 3-prong AC power plug having a grounding connector. This is a safety feature. If this plug does not fit into your existing AC outlet, you probably have an outdated AC outlet. Do not try to defeat this safety feature by modifying the power plug to make it fit into your outlet. Instead you should have your outlet changed by a qualified licensed electrician.

OPERATING YOUR SO-8000 AMPLIFIER CORRECTLY

After all proper connections have been made, you are now ready to turn the power ON.

  1. Set the VOLUME CONTROL of the SO-8000 to a low or mid-range position.
  2. Set the POWER ON/OFF SWITCH located on the back panel to the “I” position to turn the unit ON.
  3. To avoid having sudden damaging surges of power reach the SO-8000, we recommend turning the system ON in the following order:
    • Turn on all the auxiliary sources (e.g. turntable, digital player, CD player & etc.) that you will be using.
    • Turn on the pre-amplifier of any turntable with a magnetic cartridge and wait until pre-amplifier has stabilized.
    • Now turn ON the SO-8000.
    • Use the SOURCE SELECTOR to choose the source you wish to play from and play your music.
  4. When powering down your system, turn the SO-8000 OFF first by setting the POWER ON/OFF SWITCH located on the back panel to the “O” position to turn the unit OFF.

Caution: After the unit is turned OFF, wait at least 5 minutes before turning the power ON again. Do not turn it ON then OFF then ON again in quick succession. Doing this will not allow the power supply to fully discharge between the ON/OFF cycling and may result in sudden damaging surges of power to reach and permanently damaging your Speakers.

BLUETOOTH OPERATIONS

Qualcomm® aptX™ audio enables CD-like quality wireless audio over Bluetooth. aptX™ achieves this by reducing the size of the audio files so they can be squeezed through the wireless pipeline without affecting the sound quality. The SO-8000 system employs a high quality Bluetooth module powered by Qualcomm® aptX™ to receive and process the high quality lossless digital music delivered from your aptX™ compatible smartphones or Bluetooth enabled devices. The aptX™ feature of the SO-8000 Bluetooth system will automatically turn on once a compatible external device is connected.

PAIRING A SMARTPHONE OR BLUETOOTH ENABLED DEVICE

  1. Before turning ON the system, always remember to turn down the volume level using the VOLUME CONTROL to avoid possible damage to the speakers due to sudden bursts of high audio output.
  2. Rotate the SOURCE SELECTOR to position to select the Bluetooth function.
  3. Set the POWER ON/OFF SWITCH located on the back panel to the “I” position to turn the unit ON. The VACUUM TUBES will gradually heat up and glow with a dim light.
  4. The Amplifier will start searching for a previously paired device that is active and in range. If no active device is found within 10 seconds, the Speakers will emit a low level alert beep tone.
  5. To establish a new link, turn on the Bluetooth function of your Bluetooth enabled device and enable the search or scan feature to find “SO-8000” in the list of Bluetooth devices.
  6. Select the “SO-8000” from your active device list when it appears on its screen.

  8. Rotate the VOLUME CONTROL on the Amplifier to increase the listening volume gradually until the desirable level is reached.

Notes:

  • The Bluetooth function of the SO-8000 system will remain paired and connected once a link is successfully established. That means even that if you switch the SO-8000 to AUX IN 1 or AUX IN 2, and switch back later, you will resume the current Bluetooth stream without any break in the operation (i.e. your previous song will continue to play in background).
  • If you want to connect the SO-8000 to another new external Bluetooth enabled device while paired with another device, you need to turn off the Bluetooth function of the paired external device first before repeating steps #4 to #5 above to make a new link.
  • If you need to switch between different paired devices that are all in range and with Bluetooth functions enabled, the Bluetooth function of the current connected device must be turned off first to release the SO-8000 system for an alternative Bluetooth connection.
  • Refer to manual of your smartphone or external Bluetooth enabled device for correct Bluetooth operation instructions since it may vary from model to model.
  • If your Bluetooth enabled device does not support A2DP, it will not play the music through the SO-8000 system even after it is paired and connected successfully.
  • If you are pairing and connecting your personal computer to the SO-8000 using Bluetooth, you may need to set the SO-8000 as your computer’s default sound device.

RE-LINKING TO A SMARTPHONE OR BLUETOOTH ENABLED DEVICE

Even if your smartphone or Bluetooth device is already paired with the SO-8000 and with both Bluetooth functions turned on, they can become unlinked at some point due to intended manual disconnection or undesirable external signal interferences or over-range for more than 20 seconds. If this happens, the Amplifier will emit a low level alert beep tone. You can re-link them and resume play by:

  1. Select the SO-8000 from the device list on your smartphone or Bluetooth device. The SO-8000 Amplifier should re-link to your Bluetooth enabled device within 5 seconds.
  2. Tap the play button of the music player on your Bluetooth enabled device to resume playback.

AUXILIARY INPUTS

This Amplifier is equipped with 2 sets of auxiliary audio signal RCA input jacks (AUX IN 1 and AUX IN 2) for connecting 2 different external audio devices such as stereo turntable, tuner, CD player, portable digital audio player, iPod and other audio sources with a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone output jack so you can listen to your external source through the Speakers of this system.

  1. If your external audio device is equipped with standard RCA line output jacks, you should use the included RCA audio cables to make the connection between them. Be sure the L (white-coded plug) & R (red-coded plug) terminals on both ends are correctly connected.
  2. If your external device only has a 3.5 mm stereo line-out/headphone jack, you will need to use a proper RCA-to-3.5mm cord (not included) to connect it to one of the auxiliary input terminals (AUX IN 1 or AUX IN 2). Plug the RCA ends into the AUX IN jacks on the rear panel of the Amplifier and the 3.5mm stereo plug of the cable into the stereo line-out jack or headphone jack of your external audio device.

REPLACING THE VACUUM TUBES AND SERVICING

WARNINGS: STRICTLY FOR EXPERIENCED AND QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ONLY !Your Amplifier contains sufficient levels of voltage and current to be lethal. Do not attempt to open the product cabinet and tamper with the components or parts inside the amplifier unit. Even with the power turned OFF, an electric charge may still remain stored in the internal capacitors for some time. Always refer any required service to an authorized SōLIS dealer or other qualified  technician. Additional questions regarding the operation, maintenance or servicing of your system may be referred to the Spectra Customer Service Department hotline at 1-800-777-5331.

The vacuum tubes (Type 12AX7) installed in this system have a typical lifetime of 5000 hours. Because of its careful design and strict manufacturing standards, your Amplifier should normally require only minimal service to maintain its excellent performance.
However, should the sound become distorted or unbalanced even at mid or low volume levels for some reasons, it may be necessary to replace the vacuum tubes. Please read and follow the instructions below carefully before proceeding:

  1. Turn off the unit’s power by setting the POWER SWITCH to the “O” OFF position and unplug the AC POWER CORD from the 120V~ AC power source.
  2. Leave the unit unplugged for about 60 minutes to allow the high voltage power circuits to discharge sufficiently. Lethal voltages of 300V DC or more may exist. This also allows the hot vacuum tubes enough time to cool down to room temperature to avoid burns.
  3. Always grip the body of the vacuum tube in question firmly with your clean fingers, taking extra care not to touch its fragile pointed tip. Damaging the tube tip, or breaking the tube could release traces mercury vapor into the air.
  4. While gripping the vacuum tube by its body, move the tube back and forth in a rocking manner to gradually loosen it from its base socket. Always keep the removed tubes in a suitable container with soft linings to keep them safe.
  5. Only replace the tubes with the same type of vacuum tube specified in the SPECIFICATIONS section.
  6. Carefully align the bottom pins of the new tube with the electrical contact openings on the base socket and install the tube vertically until it is all the way down.

Note: Replacement vacuum tubes for this system are available from many different manufacturers. They may vary considerably in shape, size and most importantly, sound quality. Please consult the dealers for details to make sure they fit into this system before purchasing. Contact the Spectra Customer Service Department hotline at 1-800-777-5331 if you have any questions or concerns about changing the tubes, or need help locating replacement tubes.
