Instructions for making a Comfort Ring
Accessories:
- Comfort Ring, finger sized for recipient, width 6mm or 8mm
- Ring Blank—1-3/16” or large enough for ring diameter
- Turning Mandrel Bushing style (#R6RINGBU) or Cone style (#R4SMAN4/9)
- Ring making Faceplate #R6RINGFP
- Chisels: Roughing Gouge, Detail Gouge, Par?ng Tool, Skew
- Sandpaper: 150-600 Aluminum Oxide for wood, micro fine for Plastic
- A. Use a piece of scrap wood for mounting your ring blank. Size about 1-1/2 x 2” long. Mark the center and use 4 screws to mount the Face Plate in the center
- B. Mount the assembly in a drill chuck or lathe chuck in the Headstock end.
Note: PSI drill chuck style #TM42 can be safely screwed onto the headstock.
- C. Use a roughing gouge to turn the scrap wood to about 1” round. Then D. Part the Face Square with a parting tool and flatten with a Spindle gouge to make a flat surface to the ring blank
- E. Rough the surface of the ring blank and face of the scrap wood. Use Adhesive to glue the blank to the scrap. Press together on lathe as shown until cured.
- F. Turn the Ring Blank round to match the scrap. Turn the face of the Ring Blank to square with a spindle gouge
- G. Mark the center of the Ring blank then use a caliper to clearly scribe the diameter on the blank that matches the OD of your ring.
-
H. Use a parting tool to hollow out your blank up to the scribed diameter. Smooth the edges of the inside hollow flat. Make the depth deeper than the ring width.
-
I. Continue to size the ID of the Ring Blank until the Comfort ring slides easily inside. Make sure there is sufficient depth to accept the ring width.
-
J. Measure the width of the ring with a caliper. Use the caliper to scribe a line on the blank with a par?ng tool to the exact width of the comfort ring. Part the ring exte-rior completely off the blank. Clean up any rough edges
-
K. If using a transparent blank (i.e. many plastics) it will be necessary to paint the ring exterior a matching color
-
L. After the paint dries, Carefully glue ring core Inside the blank
-
M. Mount the assembly onto a ring mandrel. A cone mandrel is shown above. Tighten the mandrel to se-curely hold the ring. A “Bushing Style” mandrel can be used instead however that style mandrel does not give easy access to the sides around the ring.
-
N. Turn and smooth the edges of the ring blank around the Ring core
- O. Sand the blank down the same as any other turning project. Start with 150 grit through 600/800 Aluminum oxide paper. Wet sand with the ultra fine sanding sticks for a polished finish. Wood rings can be sealed with CA glue.
