Soil Preparation

Great gardens start with great soil!

  • Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening.
  • Flower bulbs prefer loose, well-drained soil rich in organic material. Start by removing weeds, rocks and debris from the planting area. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 12 inches and mix in organic matter such as peat moss, compost, manure, or a combination. This is especially important if you are planting in an area with heavy clay or ground that tends to hold moisture. Properly preparing the soil before planting will keep the bulbs from rotting and helps the roots to access oxygen and nutrients in the soil. This is a crucial step to ensure happy, healthy and beautiful plants.

NOTE: It is important to store bulbs correctly until they are planted. Unpack the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation, where the temperature is between 40-70℉.

Bulb Planting Instructions

  1. Plant crocus bulbs in the fall when the ground cools and before the first hard frost. Outside temperature should be about 65℉ or cooler.
  2. Select a well-drained location that receives full sun to partial shade.
  3. Dig a hole 3-4″ deep in loosened soil and place bulbs in the hole. Bulbs should be spaced about 2-4″ apart. Plant them in the ground with their pointy ends up.
  4. Cover with soil and water well so the soil above the bulb settles.

Ongoing Crocus Care

Caring for your Crocus after they bloom is rather simple. If planting them in the lawn, wait at least 6 weeks after the crocus have withered to mow the lawn, this will give them the time they need for next year’s blooms. After the foliage has turned yellow or brown, you can let them dry up on their own or you can choose to cut off the dying leaves. Cover the soil with a couple inches of mulch. You can then remove the mulch in spring to allow for new growth. If desired, you can also divide your crocus bulbs. It is recommended to divide them every four to five years. To do this, take a trowel, and carefully dig around the plant. The developing bulbs may drop from the lifted bulbs by themselves, or you can gently separate them manually. Replant some of the largest bulbs in the same spot and others in new locations right away as you did the original ones. They should bloom the following year.
