PLANTING & CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Soil Preparation

  • Great gardens start with great soil!
  • Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening.

Healthy soil should have good tilth, nutrient content, and a viable population of beneficial microorganisms. We recommend using natural and organic ingredients to prepare the soil and maintain soil fertility. It is always a good idea to have a soil test to identify your soil type (sandy, loam, silt, clay) and find out your soil pH.

NOTE : It is important to store correctly until planting. Store in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation. Plant in spring as soon as the ground has thawed and the soil has warmed to 50°F and is workable. Usually 4-6 weeks after the last frost.

Strawberry Planting Instructions

  1. Plant strawberries in the spring after the ground has thawed and there is no longer danger of frost.
  2. Soak plants in water a few minutes before planting.
  3. Choose a location with well-drained soil that receives full sun. Loosen soil before planting.
  4. Dig a hole in loosened soil as deep as the roots and about twice as wide. Be sure the hole is large enough to encompass the roots without bending them. Place plants in the hole with the roots down and the crown/top of the roots about 1”  below the soil surface. Keep any sprouting above the soil surface.
  5. Space each plant 12” apart in rows 3’ apart.
  6. Cover with soil and water well so that the soil settles. Keep soil moist during periods of dry weather but do not overwater.
    • Remove the first flowers and runners that grow so plants can direct energy into establishing a strong root system.
    • Plants will produce a small amount of fruit after being planted, with more plentiful crops occurring on plants that are 2-4 years old.
