Soil Preparation
Great gardens start with great soil!
Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening.
Flower Bulbs grow best in loose, well-drained soil that is rich in organic material. To give your Bulbs a cozy home to grow in, start by removing weeds, rocks, and debris from your planting area.
Loosen the soil to a depth of 12” and mix in organic matter (peat moss, compost, manure, or a combination). Check your soil composition to determine which type of organic material to add. Preparing the soil helps prevent the bulb from rotting, and helps its roots access oxygen and nutrients in the soil. This is a crucial step to growing happy, healthy, beautiful plants.
NOTE: Store bulbs in a cool (40-70°) dry place with plenty of air circulation until ready to plant.
Bulb Planting Instructions
- Plant tulip bulbs in the fall, before the first frost. The temperature outside should be approximately 65° or cooler.
- Select a spot with full sun to partial shade, with well drained soil.
- Dig a hole 5-6” deep in loosened soil. Plant bulbs 4-5” apart, with pointy ends up.
- Cover with soil and water well, so that the soil above the bulb settles.
Ongoing Tulip Care
Aftercare is an important and rewarding part of caring for your Tulip Flower Bulbs. If cared for properly, your tulips could return and bloom year after year. You could even divide your bulbs after a few years, planting more than you originally purchased!
As your tulips fade to yellow and the blooms drop, remove only the flower heads with pruning shears. Cut just below the base of the flower to prevent the tulips from creating a seed head. Allow the remaining foliage to die back naturally (usually another week) to absorb enough sunlight to produce energy for next year’s bloom.
Remove the rest of the dead foliage to ground level. Every three to five
years, you can dig up your Tulip Flower Bulbs and
divide them. Dig carefully around the edges of the plant with a trowel to
determine depth. Carefully lift them out–you should have a collection of
bulbs, which you can gently separate with your hands. Replant your Tulip Bulbs
right away and enjoy blooms the following spring.

and roots. Place the tulip bulbs into ventilated
