PLANTING & CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Soil Preparation
Great gardens start with great soil! Soil preparation is essential for successful gardening. Flower bulbs prefer loose, well-drained soil rich in organic material. Start by removing weeds, rocks and debris from the planting area. Loosen the soil to a depth of approximately 12 inches and mix in organic matter such as peat moss, compost, manure, or a combination. This is especially important if you are planting in an area with heavy clay or ground that tends to hold moisture. Properly preparing the soil before planting will keep the bulbs from rotting and helps the roots to access oxygen and nutrients in the soil. This is a crucial step to ensure happy, healthy and beautiful plants.
NOTE: It is important to store bulbs correctly until they are planted. Unpack the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation, where the temperature is between 40-70℉.
Bulb Planting Instructions
- Plant daffodil bulbs in the fall when the ground cools and before the first hard frost. Outside temperature should be about 65℉ or cooler.
- Select a well-drained location that receives full sun to partial shade.
- Dig a hole 6-7″ deep in loosened soil and place bulbs in the hole. Bulbs should be spaced about 4-6″ apart. Plant them in the ground with their pointy ends up.
- Cover with soil and water well so the soil above the bulb settles.
Ongoing Daffodil Care
Caring for your Daffodils after they bloom is very simple. Once they fade to yellow and dry up, do not cut the foliage, you will want to leave them where they are to absorb the sunlight that helps produce the energy needed for next years blooms. If desired, you can also divide your daffodils. It is recommended to do so every three to four years. To do this, take a trowel and carefully dig around the bed of the plant. You should find a collection of bulbs. Dig them up and gently separate with your hands. You can replant some of them in the same spot and others in new locations right away. They should bloom again the following spring.
