Product Information: PKSRSC Seam Ripper & Mini Scissor Kit

The PKSRSC Seam Ripper & Mini Scissor Kit is a product manufactured by PSI Woodworking Products. It is designed to assist users in various tasks such as trimming and cutting materials. The kit includes a seam ripper and a mini scissor.

The kit comes with the following parts:

  • Large Tube – 2.422 (2-7/16)
  • Small Tube – 2.221 (2-7/32)
  • Centerband
  • Spring Retainer
  • Protective Sleeve
  • Scissor
  • Small Seam Ripper

It is important to note that the PKSRSC Seam Ripper & Mini Scissor Kit requires some preparation before usage. The user needs to prepare the blank by using either an 8mm Barrel Trimmer or 10mm and 8mm Sleeves (#PKTRIMSET) with a pen blank squaring jig on a disc sander. The excess material should be trimmed down flush to the ends of the tubes, but not past the end of the tubes to avoid interference with assembly. The inside of the tube should be cleaned using a barrel trimmer.

Once the blank is prepared, it can be turned to a profile of the user’s choice. It is recommended to create a rounded end for better blending with the other parts. The turning process should be done using the provided tools and setup, including the knurled nut, spacer bushings, live center, and tailstock.

After turning the blank, it can be assembled using the provided parts. Diagrams E shows the tool positions for the seam ripper and scissor functions. The seam ripper function is achieved by positioning the parts accordingly, and the same applies to the scissor function.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Prepare the blank by using an 8mm Barrel Trimmer or 10mm and 8mm Sleeves (#PKTRIMSET) with a pen blank squaring jig on a disc sander. Trim the excess material down flush to the ends of the tubes, without trimming past the end of the tubes.
  2. Clean the inside of the tube using a barrel trimmer.
  3. Turn the blank to a profile of your choice, ensuring a rounded end for better blending with other parts.
  4. Set up the tools for assembly:
    • Place spacer bushings past the threads of the knurled nut.
    • Slide and lock the tailstock directly against the bushings.
    • Tighten the quill until the blank and bushings are secure.
  5. Refer to Diagram E to position the parts for either the seam ripper function or scissor function.

Preparing the Blank:

  • Cut blanks to the length of the tubes, adding 1/16” for squaring off.
  • Drill 10mm hole lengthwise through the longer blank. Drill 8mm hole through shorter blank.
  • Spread glue over tubes, insert the tubes into the blanks with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside.
  • Center the tubes lengthwise inside the blanks.
  • When the glue is dry, square the ends of the blanks, making sure the trimmed ends are 90º to the tube. Use 10mm and 8mm Barrel Trimmers or 10mm and 8mm Sleeves (#PKTRIMSET) with a pen blank squaring jig on a disc sander. Take the excess material down flush to the ends of the tubes. Do not trim past the end of the tubes since this may interfere with assembly. Use a barrel trimmer to clean the inside of the tube.

Turning the Blank:

  • Mount the bushings and blanks according to diagram B.
  • When using Mandrel Saver, there is no need for extra spacer bushings or the knurled nut. Slide and lock tailstock directly against bushings and tighten quill until blank and bushings are secure.
  • To use Knurled Nut setup (right), add spacer bushings until past the threads on the end of the Mandrel Shaft.
  • Thread on the Knurled Nut and hand tighten to hold all components in place. Slide the Tailstock up snugly against the Mandrel shaft, inserting 0.502” the live center point into the Mandrel dimple.
  • Lock Tailstock and hand tighten the quill adjustment with wheel to steady the mandrel. Do not over-tighten, it could damage mandrel shaft.
  • Lock Tailstock and hand tighten the quill adjustment with wheel to steady the mandrel. Do not over-tighten, it could damage mandrel shaft.
  • Finish the barrel using your choice of polish. Allow sufficient time for the polish to cure—refer to polish manufacturer’s instructions.

Assembly:

  • One at a time, press each Tube onto Centerband.
  • Curl Spring Retainer into a small roll, with long edges overlapping. This can be done more easily by wrapping the Retainer around a rod such as the Mandrel shaft or a 1/4” drill bit.
  • Keeping the Spring Retainer rolled, insert the solid, non-slotted end into the opening of the smaller Tube. Continue sliding the Retainer into the tube, keeping it from unrolling until it is at least two-thirds of the way into the tube. Push the remaining portion flush with the end of the Tube. To prevent the Retainer from bending, do not try to force it.
  • Insert Small Seam Ripper into the opening in the small Tube.
  • Slide the protective sleeve off of the scissor. Insert Scissor into the opening of the large Tube.
  • To use, both Scissors and Seam Ripper can be pulled out of their respective sides and flipped, inserting the back end of the tool into the Tube. After use, tools can be flipped back and inserted for storage.
