Follow DIAGRAM B provided by PSI Woodworking Products for turning the blanks.

Assembly:

  1. Ensure a proper fit before gluing the parts together

Preparing the Blank

Method A B C D
#BSTAPSET N/A 5/16” pilot and 3/8” x16 tpi tap N/A 2”
#BSERT 1/2” 10mm 3/4” 2”
STRAIGHT HOLE N/A 23/64” N/A 2”
  • Cut 1-1/2” blank to desired length. A minimum of 7in. is recommended to allow for hand size and parting of tailstock support
  • Mark the center of either end of the blank
  • Handle can be prepared with any method used to prepare a Bottle Stopper Blank. Note that Straight 23/64” hole is more prone to slippage and requires extra care in turning and assembly
  • Use the chart to drill the hole at the center mark using the corresponding drill size and depth. For both TapSet and Straight Hole methods make sure to add a small recess at the opening using a slightly larger drill bit to prevent gaps upon assembly. Depth (C,D) is important to allow the threaded post to fit fully and securely into the handle.

Turning the Blank

  • Thread Blank onto Bottle Stopper Chuck.
  • Slide the Tailstock snugly against base end of the Blank and lock Tailstock. Hand tighten the quill adjustment on the Tailstock to steady the Blank and prevent slipping while turning.
  • Mark and reduce the last 1/2” of the tailstock end of the blank. This “support section” will be parted off to create a smooth end when shaping is complete.
  • Using sharp tools, turn the barrel to a profile of your choice. Remember that Masher will be moved in both directions, handle shape should be planned with this in mind.
  • The connector to the Masher is 1” O.D., which is slightly larger than Bottle Stopper Chuck. It is recommended to size that end larger than 1” (i.e. 1-1/8”) and round the corner to help transition the final joined profile.
  • When turning, gradually reduce support section at the base end of the handle until close to final profile.
  • Sand Blank through progressive grits until desired smoothness is achieved, then part of scrap piece and sand the end of the blank smooth.
  • Finish the barrel using your choice of polish. Allow Sufficient time for the polish to cure—refer to polish instructions.

Assembly

  • Thread Post into Masher. Use included hex key to tighten firmly. If you do not see the slot for hex key, you put the post in backwards.
  • Exposed post will thread into handle the same as the Bottle Stopper Chuck.
  • If desired, Epoxy can be used to lock the Masher into the handle and keep it from becoming loose. Be sure to test to make sure you like the fit before gluing!

Care:

Keep in mind that wooden handles should be washed by hand. Do not put Masher in dishwasher if handle is permanently attached. If wood was used for handle with a non-curing polish then it should be treated with butcher block oil to prevent drying and cracking.
