JONARD TOOLS AST-210 Armored Mid Span Cable Slit and Ring Tool
INTRODUCTION:
The Jonard Tools Armored Mid Span Cable Slit & Ring Tool is the ultimate tool for gaining mid-span access to armored or thick jacketed cables 4 mm-28.6 mm (0.157″-1.125″) in diameter. The tool has an adjustable depth precision-made blade that will cut through the toughest material while ensuring no damage to the fibers inside. The tool can be set to slit cables longitudinally or to ring cables radially.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
Prior to use check the cable and know its construction. Some cables have strength members in the center of the cable, and others have the strength member in the outer jacket of the cable or have a “lay” on the outside of the jacket. If your cable has an external strength member or a strength member in the jacket of the cable, you need to use care when using this tool or you may damage the blade.
NOTE: For RocketRibbon ™ cable, make sure to stop ringing before hitting the strength members.
SETTING THE BLADE DEPTH:
To set the blade depth it is recommended to have a sample piece of cable for reference. On the bottom of the tool, there is a small black knob that adjusts the blade depth. Each mark on the bottom of the large black knurled knob represents approximately 0.040″ of blade height adjustment. Clockwise rotation of the knob increases the blade height while counterclockwise rotation reduces the blade height.
HOW TO SLIT GENERIC CABLE:
-
Loosen the large blue knurled knob on the tool and move the silver lever to the “SLIT” marking. Do not retighten the knurled knob yet.
-
Insert the cable into tool and rotate the knurled knob on the top of the tool to lower the wheel onto the cable. Ensure that the cable is seated well and that the wheel is not too tight on the cable.
-
Tighten the large knurled knob, and the blade will puncture the cable jacket and will now be ready for slitting (longitudinal cutting).
-
Pull the tool towards you to slit open the cable. If the cable has an outer strength member, slit near the strength member for best results.
-
Repeat this process on the opposite side of the cable to have two slits along the cable before ringing.
HOW TO RING GENERIC CABLE
-
Loosen the large blue knurled knob on the tool and move the silver lever to the “RING” marking. Do not retighten the knurled knob yet.
-
Insert the cable into tool where you slit it and rotate the knurled knob on the top of the tool to lower the wheel onto the cable. Ensure that the cable is seated well and that the wheel is not too tight on the cable.
-
Tighten the large knurled knob, and the blade will puncture the cable jacket and will now be ready for ringing (radial cutting).
-
Rotate the tool around the cable a few times to ring the cable.
-
Repeat this process on the other side of the slit if midspan slitting.
-
You can now remove the jacket and access the cable inside!
HOW TO SLIT ROCKETRIBBON™ CABLE:
-
Loosen the large blue knurled knob on the tool and move the silver lever to the “SLIT” marking.
-
Pull the tool towards you to make a slit in the cable.
HOW TO RING ROCKETRIBBON™ CABLE
-
Loosen the large blue knurled knob on the tool and move the silver lever to the “RING” marking.
-
Slowly rotate the tool around the cable until you feel the blade contacts the strength member.
-
Rotate in the opposite direction until you feel the blade contacts the strength member on the other side of the cable.
-
Remove the tool by raising the wheel and lowering the blade, and repeat this process on the other side of the slit.
-
Using pliers, open each side of the cable jacket to make an access window.
