EDELRID 54661 CUPID Swivel Connector
GENERAL APPLICATION NOTES
This product is part of personal protective equipment for protection against fall from a height and should be assigned to one person. These instructions for use contain important notes. The instructions must have been understood by the user before actual use. The reseller must provide this document in the language spoken in the country of use and it must be kept together with the equipment during the entire service life. The following instructions for use are important and help ensuring proper practical application. However, they cannot replace expe-rience, responsible action and knowledge required for mountaineering, climb-ing, and working at a height or depth; and they certainly cannot free users from bearing their personal risk. The product must be used exclusively by trained, experienced persons or by instructed persons who are being supervised. Users must be aware that poor physical and/or mental health can jeopardise safety under normal conditions and in emergencies. Attention: If these instructions for use are not carefully observed, the life of persons may be at risk!
GENERAL SAFETY NOTES
Mountaineering, climbing, and work at a height or depth often entail hidden risks and hazards from external influences. Errors and carelessness may cause se-vere accidents, injuries, and even death. If this product is combined with other components, these may mutually affect safety. Use the product only in connec-tion with CE marked components of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection against fall from a height. If original components of the product are modified or removed, the safety properties may be influenced adversely. The equipment should not be altered, modified or adjusted by use of additional parts in any way not specifically recommended by the manufacturer in writing. Before and after use, check the product for possible damages. Ensure correct function and suitability for use. If in doubt concerning the safety condition of the product, remove it from use immediately. In case of abuse and/or improper use, the manufacturer refuses any liability. In such cases, the responsibility and risk lie with the users or persons responsible for the operation. When using this prod-uct, we recommend additionally observing the applicable national rules. Person-al protective equipment is exclusively designed for securing of persons.
PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INFORMATION, FIGURE CAPTIONS
Before using the equipment, the user must draw up a rescue concept that ensures a person falling into a PPE is rescued immediately, safely and effec- tively. Motionless suspension in a harness may cause severe injury and even death (suspension trauma). Overload or dynamic loading of the device may not only damage the device itself but also the rope used. The connector should not be used if frequent attaching/detaching is required. External pressure on the connector will substantially reduce its loading strength, the lock might break or open. The maximum tensile strength of the connector is substantially reduced when the lock is open. Be aware that use of wide webbing may reduce the maximum tensile strength of the connector. If the lanyard is used in a fall arrest system, the length of the lanyard must always be observed, since it alters the length of the system and thus the drop path.
Anchorage points
For safety reasons, it is essential to choose the position of the anchorage de-vice or anchorage point and the type of work to be carried out in such a way that free fall and fall height are kept to a minimum. Before using a fall arrest system, ensure there is enough space below the user (including any objects and structures). In order to avoid high loads and swinging falls, anchor points for belay purposes must always be as directly vertical above the belayed per-son as possible. The anchorage point must be designed and selected so that the connection to the PPE will not result in effects reducing the loading strength or in damage to the PPE. Sharp edges, ridges and crushing can dan-gerously impair its strength. These should be covered, where necessary, using suitable auxiliary equipment. The anchorage point and the connector must be capable of supporting the loads occurring in the most unfavourable case. Even if energy absorbers (to EN 355) are used, the anchorage points must be capable of bearing a force of 12 kN, also see EN 795. Anchorage points to ANSI/ASSE Z359.4 must be capable of bearing a force of 3100 lbs (or 13.8 kN) or must correspond to a safety factor of 5:1 (provided these are specified and monitored by an adequately qualified person); the lower of the two values may be selected.
DESIGNATIONS OF PARTS
- A : Body
- B : Bolt
- C : Lock
- D : Rivet, opening width a
INSTALLATION
The bolt must be screwed in completely and tightened to the torque specified. The bolt must be secured with a bolt adhesive. AND the connector must be used with closed snap lock only.
USE
Ensure that this product is compatible with all elements in your application and conforms to the applicable regulations. The connector should never be loaded at the snap lock.
SERVICE LIFE AND REPLACEMENT
The service life of the product mainly depends on the type and frequency of use and on external influences. At the end of the useful life or latest at the end of the maximum service life, the product must be removed from use. Products made of synthetic fibres (Polyamid, Polyester, Dyneema®, Aramid, Vectran®) are subject to some aging even if not used; their service life especially de-pends on the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation and other climatic conditions they are exposed to.
MATERIAL
Aluminium, stainless steel.
Maximum service life
with optimum storage conditions and without use: unlimited.
Maximum lifetime in use
providing proper use and no detectable sign of wear showing as well as under
optimum storage conditions: unlimited. Frequent use or extremely high load may
substantially reduce the service life. Therefore, before every use check the
device for possible damage and correct function. If any of the following
points apply, immediately remove the product from use and turn it over to an
adequately qualified person or the manufactur-er for inspection and/or repair
(we do not claim this list is complete):
- if there are doubts concerning safe use;
- if sharp edges have the potential to damage the rope or hurt the user;
- if signs of damage are visible (e. g. fissures, plastic deformation);
- if the material shows signs of strong corrosion or if it has come in contact with chemicals;
- if sharp edges are located on the metal parts;
- if abrasion is extensive on the metal parts, i.e., loss of material;
- if the snap lock cannot be closed anymore;
- if it is not possible to tighten the bolt completely;
- if a hard fall load has occurred.
INSPECTION AND DOCUMENTATION
In case of commercial use, the product must be inspected regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an adequately qualified person or an ap- proved inspection body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or re- moved from use. Legibility of the markings must be checked. Such inspec-tions and service must be documented for each product. The following information must be recorded: product identification and name, manufactur-er’s name and contact details, unique identification, date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use, date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and signature of qualified person responsible. A suitable specimen is found at www.edelrid.com
STORAGE, MAINTENANCE AND TRANSPORT
Storage
Store cool, dry and if stored outside transport containers, protect from sun-
light. Prevent contact with chemicals and protect from mechanic strain.
Maintenance Clean contaminated products in hand warm water and rinse properly.
Dry at room temperature, never dry in spin dryers or near radiators!
Commercial disinfectants based on alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if
necessary. The joints of metal parts must be cleansed regularly and then be
lubricated with acid-free oil or a lubricant based on Teflon or silicone.
Transport
The product must be kept away from chemicals, dirt and mechanical damage. For
this purpose, a protective bag or special storage and transport containers
should be used.
