inovelli-LZW36-Fan and-Red-Light-Switch-product

The Inovelli Fan/Light Switch (Red Series) – Gen 2 is a smart switch designed to control both the fan and light in a room. It can be paired with a Samsung SmartThings Hub for remote control and automation. The switch requires installation of both device handlers before pairing with SmartThings.

Installation and Setup

Prior to installation of the switch, it is recommended to use the pull-string on the fan to set the fan level to High. The installation process involves two main steps – installing the switch at the wall and the canopy module at the top of the fan. It is important to note that if you are unsure of what you’re doing electrically, please consult an electrician.

Terminology

Review the terminology below to understand what kind of setup you have currently and then determine the setup you’d like to create.

  • Switch – The Inovelli Fan/Light Switch (Red Series) – Gen 2
  • Module – The Canopy Module installed at the top of the fan

Switch and Module Installation

The first step is to install the switch at the wall, followed by the canopy module at the fan. Make sure you have a fan bracket that is deep enough to house the canopy module. The switch and module should be paired at the factory, so you shouldn’t have to do anything. However, if it’s not working and you need to manually pair the switch to the module, please follow these directions:

Adding to SmartThings

The Inovelli Fan/Light Switch (Red Series) – Gen 2 can be paired with a Samsung SmartThings Hub for remote control and automation. As of February 23, 2020, SmartThings is transitioning its users to the new SmartThings App and the Classic App will be phased out. Therefore, instructions will only be available for the new app. Z-Wave Range Detection is an optional step that allows you to understand if your switch is within range of your SmartThings ZWave antenna.

You will need to install both Device Handlers prior to pairing with SmartThings. Instructions can befound here: LZW36 Device Handler Instructions
Before installation of the switch, please use the pull-string on your fan to set the fan level to High

Abbreviated Instructions for Pairing

In the SmartThings App, click on the (+) button, then “Device”, then Scan QR Code (located at the bottom left of your switch). Next, click, “Start”, select your hub and room where you’d like your switch to show up and click, “Next”. Finally, hold down on the top of the light config button (Button A – Figure 1.1) and press the light button (Button B – Figure 1.1) 3x until both LED’s pulse blue. Once complete, both LED bars should flash GREEN if successful and you’ll be taken to a screen where you can rename the switch.
NOTE: Sometimes it will make you scan the QR Code again (please do so) or it will say something like, “Not all Security Features Implemented” –you can either ignore this (switch will be paired with S0 Encryption) or try pairing closer to the hub (to get S2 Encryption).
This article will walk you through how to setup your Inovelli Fan/Light Switch (Red Series) from an in-wall installation to pairing it to your Samsung SmartThings Hub. For more advanced features such as Parameter Configuration, Device Handler Installation, Setting Up Notifications and Scenes/Routines, please see the recommended articles below.

Prerequisites

  • Wiring :  Have an understanding on how to identify the Line (Hot), Load, Neutral and Ground wires as well as identifying the light and fan wires at the fan
  • Placement :  Ensure the switch will be within distance using the Z-Wave Signal Strength Detector
  • Tools : Multimeter, Phillips Screwdriver, Needle-Nose Pliers (Optional), Wire Stripper (Optional), Ladder
  • Switch Overview: Understand the basics of the switch as shown in Figure 1.1

If you are unsure how to determine the various wires, please consult an electrician or post in our community in the dedicated Wiring Discussion section. We are unable to give electrical advice due to liability concerns.

Switch & Module Installation

WARNING : If you are unsure of how to read a schematic or have something that does not match our wiring schematics, please consult an electrician. We are unable to give out electrical advice at this time due to liability concerns — however, we do have a dedicated Wiring Discussion section in our forum that can be helpful.
The first step is to review the terminology below to understand what kind of setup you have currently and then determine the setup you’d like to create.

Terminology

  • Line : This is where your power (120V AC) comes from and is considered your, “Hot” wire. Usually a black wire.
  • Load : This is what your switch controls (ie: your light). Usually a black wire.
  • Neutral : Completes your circuit (and is what powers your Z-Wave chip). Usually a white wire.
  • Fan Load : This is what turns your fan on and is located at the fan. Usually a red wire (but it will vary based on the manufacturer).
  • Light Load :  This is what turns your fan on and is located at the fan. Usually a blue wire (but it will vary based on the manufacturer).

Installing Your Switch

The first step will be to install the switch at the wall, followed by the canopy module at the fan. Again, if you don’t know what you’re doing, please don’t try this on your own and consult an electrician. We cannot give out electrical advice due to liability reasons.

  • Prior to installing your switch, please set your fan to high using the pull-string
  • Carefully pull your existing switch out from the wall to determine where the Line and Load wires are located and keep note
  • Go to the circuit breaker and turn off power to the switch
  • Remove the wires from the existing switch and follow the Wiring Guide Schematics (located in the manual) — TLDR: Both the Line/Load wires will be placed in the Line terminal and the Neutral wire is placed in the Neutral terminal.
  • Make sure the wires are tightly secured  before finalizing the installation as loose wires will cause problems
  • Carefully finish installing the switch into the wall (NOTE:  Do not put the faceplate on yet as you’ll want to scan the QR Code)
  • Do not restore power yet — next we’ll install the canopy module at the ceiling fan

Installing Your Canopy Module

Now that your switch is installed at the wall, we’re going to install the canopy module at the top of the fan. As noted above, if you’re unsure of what you’re doing electrically, please don’t try this on your own and consult an electrician. Lastly, please make sure you have a fan bracket that is deep enough to house the canopy module:inovelli-LZW36-Fan and-Red-Light-Switch-
fig- \(3\)

Ok, let’s begin the installation:

  • Ensure the distance between your fan switch and module is no more than 32.8ft (10m) as that is the maximum distance the RF signal can travel from the switch to the canopy module.

  • Remove your ceiling fan from the electrical box and identify the load (black — which is now hot), neutral (white), and the fan motor and light loads (usually red is the fan and blue is the light, but your wires may be different based on manufacturer).

  • Remove the wires from the existing switch and follow the Wiring Guide Schematics (located in the manual) — TLDR:  Connect the load (which is now hot) to the black wire on the canopy module, connect the neutrals together (both the canopy, fan and switch neutral), connect the canopy fan wire (red) to the fan motor wire (again, usually red), and finally connect the canopy light wire (blue) to the fan light wire
    (usually blue).

  • Once completed, it’s time to check to make sure everything works and is paired correctly. Please fasten the canopy to the fan bracket using the included zip-tie, ensure all connections are secure with no exposed copper and re-assemble your fan.

  • Restore power and test your switch for manual operation — you should see a boot sequence like this when first powered on (Red, Green, Blue):

  • In addition, your module and switch should be paired at the factory, so you shouldn’t have to do anything –however, if it’s not working and you need to manually pair the switch to the module, please follow these directions: Manually Pairing Switch to Module
