Installation Instruction
Installation instruction for Carplay Android Auto interface
BMW X1 2017-2020
The interface is connected via a connection plug on the radio and a video
cable on the display. It is estimated 30-60 minutes of work to connect the
interface. No programming required.
- Step 1. Remove the front panel of the radio (unclip)
- Unclip the front panel around the radio and the air conditioning control unit using removal tools. The panel is firmly clipped on the sides and bottom with rectangular clips. The panel is clipped on the top with 3 round clips to the front panel with the vents.
- Carefully pull both plugs out of the frontpanel. The plugs are firmly in it, try to remove it without pulling the wires. Place the front panel in a safe place.
- Before you continue first check whether the navigation unit can be taken out to be able to disconnect the con cables (step 4).
- Step 2. Remove the front panel with the vents (Pull off)
- Pull off the front panel with the vents all around, possibly using removal tools. Beware of any LED lighting wires. Disconnect the plug with the hazard triangle and the plug from the LED lighting (if equipped). The right vent comes loose with the panel. Place the front panel in a safe place.
- Step 3. Disconnect the display (screws)
- Remove the two screws from the display and pull out the screen. Be careful that the clips on the back do not fall down! Unplug the video plug, connect the video cable from the interface to the display, and guide the original video plug down.
- Step 4. Remove the navigation unit (screws)
- Remove the two screws from the navigation unit and pull it forward.
- There may be not enough movement in the connection cables at the rear of the navigation unit to be able to pull it forward in its entirety. In that case, do not force anything and do not disconnect plugs from the back (then there is no way back).
- In that case, there is no other option than to look for where the cables are stuck. The only possible option is to slide the entire center console backward, but is not yet a guarantee of success (see https://youtu.be/4YXKNmQKsK4).
- Unplug the large black power connector on the back of the radio and remove the integrated plug with the two optical cables (usually green or orange). To do this, pull out the pallet with a pointed object so that the plug can be pulled out. Transfer this plug into the power connector of the interface (press into it) and then insert this power connector into the radio. Then connect the other power connector with the contrast plug.
- Step 5. Remove the panel with the USB port (screw and unclip)
- Remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the center console and the screw of the panel with USB port. Pull off the panel. Make a pass-through for the AUX cable.
- Step 6. Connect the interface (plugs)
- Connect the antenna, connection plug , video plug and any USB extension cable to the interface. Do not stick the antenna to metal.
- Step 7. Connect the AUX-USB adapter (plugs)
- Lead the AUX cable to the USB port (push the cable away under the center console cover). If necessary, drill a hole in the panel or cut away some plastic at the bottom for the AUX cable to pass through. Connect the AUX cable to the AUX-USB adapter and plug it into the USB port.
- Step 8. Test the system
- Choose USB as the source of sound in the original system. Switch to the interface by pressing the back or return button.
- Remove and forget the existing bluetooth connection with the BMW.
- Connect the phone to the bluetooth signal from the interface and turn on WIFI.
- The bluetooth connection creates a WIFI network and then disconnects itself.
- Test the system with regard to graphics, sound, switching between radio and interface and driving backward.
- Step 9. Mount the interface
- Mount the interface under the navigation unit if there is enough space or else under the glove compartment.
- Step 10. Build the system
- Reconnect all components in reverse order. The system uses the existing microphone.
- Step 11. Have fun!
