TIPS & TECHNIQUES
When you cut your hair, you should visualize the head as if it were divided into four sections. The image below shows the different sections. Using proper techniques when moving from one section to the next will help you blend the sections together for professional-looking results.
- The first time you cut hair, cut only a small amount of hair until you become accustomed to the length of hair each attachment guard provides.
- For best results, hair should be dry before using clippers.
- For best results, when cutting hair, go through the hair at a slow, even speed. Don’t force the clipper through the hair.
- For best results, go through the hair against the direction of your hair’s growth, so you can catch more hair with the guard.
- The blades on your new clipper should be oiled every few haircuts.
STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR CUTTING HAIR
-
Comb hair and remove tangles. Add the largest attachment guard to the clipper.
-
Start at the hairline on the side of the head and cut up to the middle of the head.
Note: If the cut hair is too long, repeat with the next smaller guard. -
Continue around the head repeating step 2.
-
You are now ready to cut the middle portion of the hair.
-
Use the attachment guard with the next highest number than in step 3. Example: If you used a #6 guard in step 3, select guard #7.
-
Continue cutting around the middle portion of the head as in steps 2 and 3.
-
For cutting the top of the head, use the attachment guard with the next highest number in step 6. Start at the front bang area.
-
Cut across the top of the head. Comb hair on the entire head to assess if further cutting is necessary.
BLENDING
When you want to blend from one section to the next, you will need to practice moving the clipper in an upward rocking motion. This motion will leave the hair slightly longer where the clipper pulls away from the scalp, enabling you to blend between the sections and achieve a smooth transition from one length of hair to the next. This technique will enhance the appearance of your haircut.
-
Blend out any cut lines. Lines may form where you change guard sizes. Use the same guard used in step 3
-
Using a rocking motion, blend out the middle cut line.
-
Using the guard used in step 8 repeat blending the top outline as needed.
-
No attachments are needed. Start with the sideburns.
-
Continue around the ear as shown.
-
Trim neckline as shown. Use a clipper or battery trimmer (not all kits include a trimmer).

CLIPPER MAINTENANCE
OIL BLADES:
The blades on your new clipper should be oiled every few haircuts. When oiling
your clipper, turn the clipper “ON – I.” hold the unit with the blades facing
DOWN and squeeze three drops across the front of the blade and one drop on
each side on the heel of the blade. Wipe off excess oil with a soft
cloth.
NOTICE-DO NOT OVER OIL!
Excessive oiling or application of liquids will cause damage if allowed to
seep back into the motor.
DO NOT USE HAIR OIL, GREASE, OR ANY OIL MIXED WITH KEROSENE OR ANY SOLVENT.
DETACHABLE BLADES: 9179, 9179LP, and 2240 Only
REMOVING BLADES: 9179, 9179LP, and 2240 Only
Before removing the blades. make sure the on/off switch is turned to the “O”
or “OFF” position.
- Hold the clipper in both hands. Using both thumbs, push the blades away from the front of the clipper.
- The blade set with the top and bottom blades will come off in one piece.
ATTACHING BLADES:
9179, 9179LP, and 2240 Only Before reattaching blades, make sure the on/off
switch is turned to the “O” or “OFF” position.
- To reattach the blade, place the hook at the bottom of the blade set into the space provided on the clipper housing.
- Pivot the blade set toward the housing. Once it is seated, snap the blade set to the case so that you hear a click.
CLEANING DETACHABLE BLADES: 9179, 9179LP, and 2240 Only
Use the cleaning brush(es) provided to remove hair from between the blades, 9179, 9179LP, and 2240LP detachable blades are rinseable with water, however, the rest of the clipper is NOT washable. After cleaning blades, oil blades as noted above.
CLEANING BLADES: 2240LP and PPL
Only Use the cleaning brush(es) provided to remove hair from between the blades. DO NOT USE WATER TO CLEAN THE BLADES OR THE CLIPPER. For best results, after brushing the blades, add Wahl clipper oil to the blades.
TAPER LEVER: 2240LP and PPL Only
The taper lever adds versatility to your clipper by allowing you to gradually change the closeness of your cut, ideal for blending and fading. Lever in “Up” Position = Closest Cut; Lever in “Down” Position = Longest Cut. Should the blades become jammed with hair, move the taper lever up and down several times to help free up the blades.
ALIGNING CLIPPER BLADES: 2240LP and PPL Only
Your Wahl clipper blades were oiled and aligned before leaving our factory. Blades may need to be realigned if they have been bumped or removed for cleaning. To determine if realignment is necessary, compare your clipper blades with this sketch.
- If your clipper has a taper lever, position the lever in the closest cut (up) position.
- The end of the top blade teeth should be approximately 1/32-inch ( 64 mm) back from the bottom blade.
- The extreme left-hand tooth of the top blade must be covered or to the left of the first small tooth of the bottom blade.
- The extreme right-hand tooth of the top blade must be touching the big tooth on the bottom blade
If blade alignment is incorrect, add a few drops of Wahl Clipper Oil to the blades, turn the clipper “ON” for a few moments, turn the “OFF” and unplug. Loosen screws slightly and adjust. Tighten screws after blades are aligned. Other than blades. this clipper has no user-serviceable parts.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If your clipper does not seem to take charge, check the following before returning it for repair:
- Check outlet operation by plugging in another appliance.
- Make sure the outlet is not connected to a switch that turns the power at the outlet off.
- Be sure the clipper is properly connected to the charging cord, all connections are secure and the switch on the clipper is turned “OFF – 0.”
- If your electricity is connected to a master power switch, we suggest the clipper be disconnected from the charging cord anytime the master switch is off. Leaving the unit plugged into a dead outlet or an unplugged charger will drain the battery.
- If the clipper does not run and it is completely charged, turn the unit “ON – I” and pinch or push the blades manually. (Oil may have dried out between the blades, so they may be temporarily stuck together.)
CHARGING
- Before the clipper is used for the first time, it should be fully charged.
- PPL and 9179: The unit should be charged approximately 3-5 hours for a full charge.
- 2240LP, 9649LP, 9179LP Only: The unit should be charged approximately 2-3 hours for a full charge.
- After the initial charge, the clipper can be “Quick Charged” for 15 minutes. This should allow enough power for one haircut.
- To charge, turn off the clipper and connect the charging cord plug into any convenient electrical outlet at the correct voltage.
- CHARGE INDICATORS:
- PPL Only: Not all PPL clippers include a charge indicator light. On PPL clippers with an indicator light, the light will not turn off or change color after the clipper is fully charged. The power indicator light illuminates to reflect when the charger is properly connected to the clipper and plugged in. Light will not indicate when the clipper needs to be recharged.
- 9179 Only: When the clipper is charging, the indicator light will be red, when the unit is fully charged, the light will turn green.
- 2240LP, 9179LP, 9649LP Only: The indicator light will be red while charging and green when fully charged or when running. The light will flash red when the battery is low.
- When the clipper is not in use, it may be connected to the charging cord and plugged into an outlet to assure maximum power is available when it is next used. This transformer is designed to charge the battery without overcharging. The clipper cannot be overcharged, so you may charge it as often as desired.
- The charging cord should be removed from the clipper when not charging. Leaving the charging cord connected to the clipper without being plugged in may cause the battery to drain.
- The cord should not be used to pull the clipper. Since freedom of movement needs to be maintained, care should be used to keep the cord untwisted and unobstructed. When stored, the cord should be coiled and the unit placed in the original box or storage case (if provided), away from children.
TRAVEL LOCK: 9179LP Only
9179LP clippers have a push button on/off switch. The unit has a travel lock feature to prevent accidental activation during shipment and travel. To activate or deactivate the travel lock feature, press and hold the on/off button for 3 seconds. The indicator light will flash green 3 times when the lock is deactivated and will flash red when the lock is activated.

EASY-TO-USE ATTACHMENT GUARDS
ATTACHMENT GUARDS: Not all kits include the guards shown below
Attachment guards help you cut hair to a desired length by keeping the blades
at a set distance from the skin, helping ensure an even hair length after
cutting hair with a guard attached to the clipper. For easy reference, each
guard is numbered and lists what length the hair will be after being cut using
the noted size guard. Always start with a longer length guard (you can always
use a shorter-length guard if the length is not short enough). The first time
you cut hair, cut only a small amount of hair until you become accustomed to
the length of hair each attachment guard provides. To achieve an even
“tapered” cut around the ears, use the LEFT and RIGHT tapered attachment
guards. To trim eyebrow hair, use the BROW trim attachment guard. Before
adding or removing guards from clipper, make sure the on/off switch is turned
off
(or in the “0” position). Not all kits include all the different sizes and
styles of guards listed in this instruction sheet.
Your kit will include a set of either ‘Standard’ or ‘Elite’ attachment guards.
ADDING:
While holding at a slight angle, place the attachment guard onto the clipper
so the tips of the blade rest into the slots of the guard fingers. (fig A)
Using your thumb, push down on the guard, where the guard size number is
located until you Hear a “SNAP”. (fig B)
REMOVING:
While holding the top of the attachment guard, place your thumb on the
underside of the attachment guard tab. Push up on the tab to remove the guard
from the clipper. (fig C)
SPECIALTY ATTACHMENT GUARDS: Not all kits include the guards shown below
The cutting length of the ear taper guards ranges from 3/16” (#1-1/2”) to 1/4” (#4).
EAR TAPER GUARDS:
Attach the “R” RIGHT attachment guard to the clipper as directed above.
- Starting BEHIND the right ear (so the shorter portion of guard fingers are closest to the ear), move the clipper upward and around towards the front side of the ear repeating as necessary. (Fig A)
- Keep the “R” attachment guard on the clipper. Starting on the FRONT of the left ear (so the shorter portion of guard fingers are closest to the ear), move the clipper upward and around towards the back side of the ear repeating as necessary. (Fig B)
- Remove the “R” RIGHT attachment guard and attach the “L” LEFT attachment guard. Starting BEHIND the left ear (so the shorter portion of guard fingers are closest to the ear), move the clipper upward and around towards the front side of the ear repeating as necessary. (Fig C)
- Keep the “L” attachment guard on the clipper. Starting on the FRONT of the right ear (so the shorter portion of guard fingers are closest to the ear), move the clipper upward and around towards the back side of the ear repeating as necessary. (Fig D)
BROW TRIM GUARDS
- Attach the BROW attachment guard to the clipper as directed above.
- For a longer cut length, start from just above your nose and slowly guide the clipper to the outside of your face.
- For a shorter cut length, start from the outside of your face and slowly guide the clipper to the inside of your face.
