Provides important information
- Serious injuries include blindness, wounds, burns (low and high temperature), electric shock, fractures, poisoning, etc. with long-lasting effects or that require hospitalization and/or long-term hospital visits for treatment.
- Minor or moderate injury includes wounds, burns, electric shock, etc. not requiring hospitalization and/or long-term hospital visits for treatment.
- Property damage means damage to the device.
Power and other Safety Precautions
WARNING
- Do not leave parts such as plastic covers and the electric plug within reach of children and pets. Misuse of parts including, but not restricted to, accidental swallowing may cause choking and suffocation resulting in death or serious injury. If you suspect a part has been swallowed, immediately take appropriate emergency action and consult a doctor.
- Do not place the drive on a shaky table, uneven, tilted surface, or other unstable location. The driver may fall, causing damage to the driver or possible injury.
- Do not carry out improper maintenance or disassemble, as this may cause personal injury or may result in electric shock or fire
- Do not expose the drive to wet or damp conditions, as this may result in electric shock or fire
- Do not allow any liquids or metal objects such as screws, staples, or paper clips to enter the drive. Foreign objects may create a short circuit, which may cause product damage and fire, possibly resulting in serious injury.
- Do not use the drive when the metal parts and plastic parts exhibit abnormal characteristics, as this may result in electric shock.
- Do not use the drive if it has been dropped or damaged, as this may result in electric shock.
- If the Product produces an odor, overheats, or smokes, immediately turn off the device and disconnect the USB cable from the device. Failure to do so may result in fire, damage to the drive, and/or personal injury including burns and electric shock. Do not use the drive again. Please contact the store from which you purchased it.
NOTICE
-
Do not disconnect the USB cable while operating, as this may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
-
Do not touch the USB cable while operating, as this may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
-
Do not bump, drop or jar the drive, as this may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
-
Do not use the drive at high or low temperatures or when the temperature changes suddenly. This may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
( Operating: 5°C – 35°C, Switch off: -40°C – 65°C) -
Make sure that you back up as much data on the drive as you can to the other storage drive.
-
Do not use the drive when dew condensation is present, as this may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
-
Do not cover the drive during operation, as it may become overheated.
-
Do not use the drive during a thunderstorm. If you see lightning or hear thunder, immediately turn off the devices to which the drive is connected, computer and peripherals, and disconnect the USB cable from the computer. An electric surge caused by lightning may result in loss of data or damage to the drive.
-
Do not clean the drive or any accessories with any chemicals. To clean the outside of the drive or the accessories, use a dry soft cloth. Use of chemicals may result in the deterioration, deformation, or discoloration of those items and the loss of data.
NOTE
Compatibility may vary depending on the user’s hardware configuration and operating system. USB3.0 is backward compatible with USB2.0
If the drive is not provided with enough power, it will not operate. You may need a USB 3.0 Express Card Host Controller for your computer if the computer doesn’t have a USB 3.0 port. You can also connect the drive to your computer’s USB 2.0 port. However, the transfer rate will be downgraded to that of USB 2.0.
One Gigabyte (1GB) means 109 = 1,000,000,000 bytes and one Terabyte (1TB) means 1012 = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software, and operating system, and other factors.
- Use only the accessories supplied by the manufacturer.

FAQ’s
Does my drive need to be formatted after installation?
No, because during manufacturing the drive is already formatted.
Do I require Windows® USB drivers?
No, your operating system already includes them.
Can I use the drive to start my computer?
Because external hard drives cannot be used to boot Windows®, the answer is no.
Why is a fan not required for the drive?
There is no need for a fan because the drives are made to dissipate heat efficiently. As a result, the operation is almost silent.
Why is my driver’s capacity (as displayed by Windows®) less than the drive’s real declared capacity?
The varied approaches to determining capacity can be used to explain this discrepancy. While operating systems use the binary system for calculations, hard drive manufacturers use the decimal system. Decimal example: 1TB is equal to 1,000GB, 1,000MB is equal to 1,000KB is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes. 1 GB is equal to 1,024 MB, 1,048,576 KB, and 1,073,741,824 bytes. As a result, Windows reports that a 1TB (decimal) hard drive only has 931GB (binary).
Can I transfer an operating system from one machine to another using my drive?
No, you must install the operating system according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Simple copies do not function.
Do they provide data recovery services at Toshiba?
Data recovery services are available from Toshiba for external hard drives.

europe.com/services.
Do this hard drive support photo and video downloads from Apple products? Is there a certain cable I need to accomplish this with?
There are several models listed here. Although I believe you were referring to the Canvio Basics model, this question appears for everyone without that information. For those considering the Canvio Flex, it has both USB-C and USB-A ports and is already preformatted to operate with MacOS, Windows, and a variety of other devices. If you only use it with Apple devices, you might wish to reformat it, but it should still function.
The information above is erroneous; the hard drive size should be 8GB. presume error, but…? 4TB RAM size
The boxed part above contains a typo. The advertisement does actually say 4GB, however above and below this, it correctly says 4TB.
Does the PS4 support this?
The product is first-rate and functions nicely with all computers unable to comment on the PS4.
How do I utilize this (4TB basics) with Thunderbolt as described in the advertisement?
I am unable to respond to your question using my personal experience because the model you are asking about is different from the one I own. The Thunderbolt connector on my laptop is a USB-C one, though, so I believe using the drive should be possible by simply connecting it to the right port.
Does your TV playback home videos? such as a flash drive?
Sure, provided that the movies are available in TV-compatible formats.
Is the USB A cable included?
Yes, a USB A standard cable is provided.
How can I get this to be recognized on the Xbox One as an external storage device rather than a media center?
You’ll be prompted to format the drive by your Xbox. So, you can utilize it on an Xbox.
Why are hard dusk’s size 4 GB and its color 4TB?
According to the description, this hard drive has 4TB.
