Read all instructions before use

  • Use the product only for its intended use as described in this instruction manual.
  • Use by more than one infant without adequate reprocessing may present a health risk and could cause cross-contamination.
  • Use Medela original accessories only.
  • Inspect before each use. Throw away at the first signs of damage, mould or weakness.
  • Never leave packaging and components unattended. Keep them out of reach of children.

SAVE THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Important safeguards

  • Plastic bottles and component parts become brittle when frozen and may break when dropped.
  • Also, bottles and component parts may become damaged if mishandled, e.g. dropped, over-tightened, or knocked over.
  • Take appropriate care in handling bottles and components.
  • Do not use the liquid if bottles or components become damaged.

Cleaning

Important

  • Only use drinking-quality water for cleaning.
  • Reprocess all parts prior to first use (see below).
  • Clean all parts immediately after use.
  • When cleaning the feeder, do not turn the reservoir inside out.
  • Do not clean the reservoir with a sharp or hard object (such as a brush, a toothpick or sharp fingernails).
  • The cleaning instructions below are general instructions. For country-specific regulations and guidelines, ask your Medela agent or visit our website (www.medela.com).

After each use

  • Disassemble the feeder into its individual parts. Make sure to separate the yellow valve plate from the reservoir. Also separate the white membrane from the valve plate.
Note : You can re-use the milk that is left in the bottle. However, you must throw away the milk left in the reservoir. Therefore, hold the feeder above the sink. Carefully unscrew the lid and remove it together with the reservoir and valve plate, so as not to spill milk. Discard the leftover milk from the reservoir.

  • Rinse all parts with cold water (approx. 20 °C). Rinse the (slit in the) pads of the reservoir thoroughly, to remove as much milk residue as possible.

  • Clean all parts with plenty of warm, soapy water (approx. 30 °C). Use a commercially available washing-up liquid, preferably without artificial fragrances and colouring (for hospital use: 5–15 % anionic tenside, nonionic tenside, pH neutral).

  • Rinse all parts with cold water (approx. 20 °C).

  • Dry with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth.

  • Alternatively, clean the product in the dishwasher. Place the parts on the top rack or in the cutlery section. Use a commercially available dishwashing detergent.

Home use

Before first use and once a day

  • Clean the feeder as described under “After each use”.
  • Disinfect the feeder as described under “Disinfection”.

Hospital use:
Before first use – once a day – before passing on to another infant

  • Clean and disinfect the feeder as described under “Disinfection”.
  • If required by national, regional or in-house regulations, sterilise the feeder as described under “Sterilisation

Disinfection

Home use:

  • Cover all parts with water and boil for five minutes.
  • Or use a Quick Clean microwave bag in accordance with the instructions.
  • Dry with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth.

Hospital use:

  • Clean and disinfect all parts in a mechanical washerdisinfector. Use appropriate inserts for small parts. Use a common cleaning detergent for washer-disinfectors (NTA- , phosphate-, chlorine- and tenside-free, alkaline with pH level 11.7–12.7).
  • Disinfect for 5 minutes at a temperature of 93 °C.
  • Select an appropriate program according to the above instructions that includes drying. If there is no program with drying, dry the clean parts with a clean cloth or leave to dry on a clean cloth.

Sterilisation

Hospital use:

  • Check that the product parts are clean, dry and intact.
  • Wrap the product parts in appropriate sterile packaging.
  • Sterilise the product in the autoclave at 134 °C for 5 minutes.
  • To avoid damage, do not stack or apply external pressure.

Storage

Put the clean parts in a clean storage bag or a clean environment. It is important that all residual moisture dries. Do not store parts in an airtight container/bag.

How to use

  • You can use the SoftCup as an alternative to cup feeding.
  • It is recommended that the mother performs her first feeding(s with the SoftCup under the supervision of a professional/trained staff.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap before touching the product (parts). Dry your hands with a fresh towel or a single-use paper towel.
  • Always check the temperature of the liquid before feeding.

Assembling the feeder

  • Hold the valve plate with the high rim facing upwards. Place the white membrane onto the valve plate, inside the rim. Push the membrane’s knob completely through the central hole of the valve plate.
  • Fill the bottle with the required amount of liquid.
  • Place the assembled valve with the high rim upwards onto the bottle opening.
  • Place the reservoir on the valve plate such that the rim is inside the reservoir.
  • Slide the lid over the reservoir. Screw all parts firmly together with the lid.

Filling the teat

  • Hold the feeder upright. Squeeze just below the pads to release some air out of the reservoir (see the above picture).
  • Keep squeezing while turning the feeder upside down.
  • Now release the pads. Some liquid will enter the reservoir.
  • Repeat the above steps until the reservoir is almost full.

Note : If the reservoir is not filling properly, check that the slit in the pad is open. Use stronger finger pressure to help flow the liquid.

Feeding

  • Hold the feeder horizontally, with a slight angle upwards (see the picture at the right). If you hold the bottle in this way, you can refill the reservoir automatically during the feeding, by squeezing just below the pads.
  • Gently squeeze the two pads on both sides of the reservoir, to push the liquid in the feeding tip of the reservoir.
  • Touch the infant’s lip with the tip of the reservoir to encourage the infant to open its mouth.
  • Lay the reservoir on the infant’s lower lip (with the feeding tip upwards). Carefully tap on the feeder so that the liquid pooling in the reservoir can be fed to the infant. Usually, the infant will automatically lap the liquid.

Note : If the feeder leaks, check that the feeder has been correctly assembled.
