  12. Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/ apparatus combination to avoid injury from tip-over.
  13. Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
  14. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. YOUR NEW SUBWOOFER

Break-In
Although Paradigm XR subwoofers sound great “out of the carton,” they will sound even better once they are “broken in.” Allow them to play for several hours before you begin any critical listening.
NOTE: If your subwoofer has been transported or stored in the cold, let it warm to room temperature before use.

Cleaning
Paradigm XR subwoofers have a durable premium finish. To clean, use a damp soft cloth. Do not use a strong or abrasive cleaner. Avoid getting any part of the subwoofer system wet. Do not place wet objects (drinking glasses, potted plants, etc.) on top of the subwoofer—if allowed to soak in, even a small amount of water may permanently damage the subwoofer enclosure.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

The ‘Watts’ (W) rating indicated on the rear panel is the maximum AC power your subwoofer will draw when producing its maximum power output. However, the actual wattage draw will vary with the bass content of the program material—more if there is a lot of deep bass, less when there is not as much bass.
Although generally not required for typical music and movie program material, if the bass content of your program material is very loud and more continuous in nature, we recommend connecting subwoofers with higher wattage ratings (i.e. 1500 W) to dedicated AC circuits.

ROOM ACOUSTICS
You are about to experience the astonishing bass performance of a state-of- the-art Paradigm® subwoofer. These subwoofers incorporate highly advanced patented technology and set all new standards for deep bass extension, ultra- low distortion and sound power output and provide unprecedented bass articulation and slam.
It is important to note that just as the amount of soft furnishings has a decided impact on mid and high frequencies, those below 150 Hz are dramatically affected by the room itself—its size, shape, as well as by physical boundaries throughout the room. Experimenting with subwoofer placement and control adjustments is the best way to achieve optimal bass performance in any room. Keep in mind the following guidelines when deciding on best subwoofer placement:

  • Concrete floors and walls tend to aggravate low-frequency standing wave problems and are less preferred.
  • Rooms where height, width and length are similar should be avoided as they can exhibit significant low-frequency standing wave problems. This may result in reduced clarity. If no other room is possible, experiment with subwoofer placement to minimize acoustic problems.

SUBWOOFER PLACEMENT

SAFETY PRECAUTION: Before proceeding with this section, be sure to read and follow all safety precaution notices at the beginning of this manual.

Bass is less and less directional as it goes down in frequency. For best sonic integration, locating your subwoofer between your front speakers or beside one of them and close to the back wall will usually provide the best bass performance. If this location is not possible your subwoofer may be placed anywhere in the room without affecting the stereo image of your front speakers or the soundstage of your multichannel speaker system.
Fig. 1a and Fig. 1b (see page 8), highlight how bass output is generally affected by room placement. When seated in a typical listening area of your room, placing the subwoofer inside the “shaded” areas will typically result in bass performance as follows:

Controls are provided to align your subwoofer’s output to the other speakers in your system, follow the “Fine Tuning” instructions (see page 15).

THE ADVANTAGES OF USING TWO SUBWOOFERS IN YOUR LISTENING ROOM
When using two subwoofers, placing one in the front of the room and the other in the rear of the room (Fig. 2) usually provides the best bass performance and sonic integration. Consult the “Fine Tuning” section of this Owners Manual for more information on adjusting phase settings. If those locations are not possible, or if you want to experiment with placement options using two subwoofers, the following procedure will be a helpful guide to achieving better bass performance. Refer to “Subwoofer Connection” (below) then proceed as follows:

  1. Temporarily turn all speakers off (either by turning your amplifier off or disconnecting them).
  2. Connect and place one subwoofer in the central area of your listening room. Follow directions for connection, as outlined in the following section.
  3. At a moderately loud level, play music or a video soundtrack with extended bass that is repetitive or continuous.
  4. Walk around your room and note where the bass sounds louder and where it sounds quieter.
  5. Place the first subwoofer within a louder bass area of your room; then place the second subwoofer within a quieter bass area of your room.
  6. Connect both subwoofers and switch all speakers back on; and switch the amplifier on, or reconnect it.
  7. Follow the “Fine Tuning” instructions (see page 15), to optimize your system’s overall bass performance.
    (See your Dealer for connection instructions using two subwoofers.)
    NOTE: The preceding is only a guideline. You may want to use a bass test disc and SPL meter to more accurately determine the bass characteristics of your listening room (see your Dealer for more information).

Remember that room acoustics vary, which means that it may take some experimenting with subwoofer placement to achieve the best subwoofer performance.Paradigm-XR11,-XR13-Subwoofers-fig 2

SUBWOOFER CONNECTION

SAFETY PRECAUTION: Before proceeding with this section, be sure to read and follow all safety precaution notices and warnings at the beginning of this manual.
Turn all components OFF before connecting the subwoofer.

NOTE: Speakers set to “Large” with your processor or A/V receiver will still be reproducing bass frequencies—be careful not to overdrive them!
We recommend the use of high-quality cables and connectors. (See your Dealer for more information).

INPUT FACILITIES

Speaker Level Input
Can be used to connect to any stereo amplifier when a dedicated subwoofer output is not present or desired. This connection will not place any additional load on your speaker amplifier.

Balanced XLR Input
Used to connect to the Balanced XLR Sub/LFE Output of your Preamplifier/Processor or other suitable low-level source. While this connection provides the lowest level of noise, please remember that this connection does use the on board low pass filter settings, so this will need to be configured in the device connected to the XR subwoofer.

Line Level Input (LFE In)
Used to connect to the RCA “Subwoofer Out” of your Preamplifier/Processor or other suitable low-level source. As with the XLR input, this is an LFE input which does not use the subwoofer’s on board low pass filter. The low pass filter will need to be configured in the device connected to the XR subwoofer. Typically, “Subwoofer Out” connections will have this enabled by default.

Line Level Input (Left/Right)
Used to connect to the RCA output of your Preamplifier/Processor or other suitable low-level source. This connection does use the onboard low pass filter of the XR subwoofer. This connection should be used when the device connected to the XR subwoofer does not have a low pass filter present or it cannot otherwise be adjusted to your preference.

OTHER CONNECTIONS AND CONTROLS

ARC (USB-C) Input
This USB-C connection is used exclusively for connecting to a computer when running the ARC Genesis calibration software. Further details on this feature can be found later in this manual.

Power Mode
This switch is used to toggle the XR subwoofers power on method.

Auto
The subwoofer will automatically power on when an input signal is detected, and after a period of inactivity, will automatically power down when no input signal is detected. Please note the power on and power off sequences do not occur immediately, so some delay is normal and to be expected.

Trigger
In this mode the XR subwoofer will power on and off accordingly, only when instructed by a device connected to the 12V trigger input.

On
In this mode the XR subwoofer is always powered on and ready to play with no delay caused by the power on or power off sequences. Please note that this mode does draw more power when the subwoofer is not in use than the “Auto” mode as the subwoofers electronics are always powered on in this mode.

Trigger In (12V)
Used to allow another device to control the XR subwoofers power on or power off state. The XR must be in “Trigger” power mode to respond to these commands .Paradigm-XR11,-XR13-Subwoofers-fig 3

CONTROLS

Top Touch Panel
The majority of the settings and controls of the XR subwoofer must be accessed with the free Paradigm Subwoofer Control App found in the Apple App Store or Google PlayStore. The XR subwoofers are also equipped with a capacitive touch screen volume control on the top, near the back of the subwoofer. This touch screen control allows you to adjust the volume in several ways.
“Volume Swipe” – The panel will illuminate when your hand is near the control panel. By pressing the volume indicator you can swipe your finger to the right to raise the volume, or to the left to lower the volume.
“Volume Tap” – Alternatively, more minute volume adjustments can be made by pressing your finger on the right side of the control panel to raise the volume or by pressing at the left side to lower the volume.Paradigm-

SETTINGS
The following settings can be found on the main page of the Paradigm subwoofer control app. This offers maximum convenience by enabling the adjustment of these settings from anywhere within range of the subwoofer. This also makes adjustments much more accurate as you can listen in real time from your listening position as you make changes in the app. At any point within the app, you can press the “Help” icon for an explanation of the feature or setting. The app communicates to the subwoofer via Bluetooth LE so only 1 device can control the subwoofer at any time. To allow another device to connect to the subwoofer, you must force close the app or choose the “Discovery” tab to return to the device discovery screen. This will disconnect the app from the subwoofer and allow it to be seen on another device running the app.

DSP Mode (Listening Mode)
XR Subwoofers allow a choice between 3 different DSP or Listening modes. Simply press the icon on the main page of the app or select from the options listed in the “Listening Mode” section of the app (located in the “settings” tab).

Movie
The Movie listening mode is an aggressive setting that maximizes output. Recommended for a cinema experience or whenever maximum output is desired.

Music
The Music listening mode is the default setting. This mode is balanced and best used for true audio playback.

Night
The Night listening mode reduces bass output and is best used for discrete playback.

Volume
The XR subwoofers volume can be adjusted through the control app or the touch screen control on the subwoofer itself. Any adjustment made with one method of control, will be reflected in the other. Through the app, you get a dial allowing adjustment from -40dB (essentially muted) all the way to +12dB (absolute maximum) with 1dB increments in between. Volume can be adjusted by dragging the volume indicator in clockwise (volume up) or counter clockwise (volume down) motion around the volume indicator in the center of the screen. You can also tap the “-” button or “+” button to make 1dB adjustments if you prefer.

Sweep
The Sweep toggle initiates a self generated tone sweep from the subwoofer. This can be used for fine tuning or positioning of the subwoofer as well as being useful in locating buzzes and rattles around the room. To initiate the tone sweep, simply tap the “Sweep” toggle icon to begin the sweep process. The sweep will repeat continuously until it is stopped. You can hold the sweep at any point by pressing the “pause” symbol that appears. By “pausing” the sweep, the subwoofer will hold that specific frequency. This can also be adjusted with the frequency slider and/or “-” and “+” buttons that appear when the sweep is “on hold.” Press the “continue” button to exit these controls. This sweep can then be resumed by pressing the “play” icon.

SETTINGS

The following settings must be accessed via the “Settings” tab of the Paradigm subwoofer control app. This offers maximum convenience by enabling the adjustment of these settings from anywhere within range of the subwoofer. This also makes adjustments much more accurate as you can listen in real time from your listening position as you make changes in the app.

Volume
This is another way to access the same volume and sweep features described previously. It is only present here for convenience as you make adjustments to your subwoofer and can otherwise be ignored.

Low Pass Filter
Applied to the Speaker Level or RCA Left/Right inputs. Not applied to LFE inputs. Set at a value equal to 70% of your main speaker’s lowest rated frequency. Also experiment with higher and lower settings. If uncertain, start with 35Hz and adjust to preference.

Bypass
Select if using the LFE input and plan to use the bass management in your electronics. This is the most common setting when connected to an AC Receiver or Processor for Home Theater or when connected to a “Subwoofer Out” on suitable electronics.

3rd Order
Select if using Left/Right speaker level or RCA inputs. This filter has a slope of 18dB per octave (slower roll off than 4th order). For most applications without on board bass management, this setting is ideal.

4th Order
Select if using Left/Right speaker level or RCA inputs. This filter has a slope of 24dB per octave (faster roll off than 3rd order).

Phase
This is one of the more tricky settings to properly dial in on a system, but with the precise control made possible through the app, it is much easier than traditional control methods. If your electronics do not feature a way to adjust the subwoofer phase automatically, we recommend the following simplified method.

  1. Play a test tone of the low pass frequency you have chosen or a song with repetitive bass at a moderate volume level.
  2. Toggle on the “Inverted” setting in the “Phase/Polarity” menu within the app.
  3. From your main listening position, adjust the phase setting until the bass appears to be as quiet as possible.
  4. When you have found the point where the bass is the most quiet, simply toggle the “inverted” setting back to off and the bass should be noticeably stronger.

There are more precise way to perform this tuning, but there is some risk involved in performing these other methods. We have found this method still works well without the risk associated with extra steps involved. In short, adjust the phase setting to achieve the strongest and best sounding bass from the subwoofer. By using the “inverted” setting, we find it is easier to listen for the most quiet bass, then by turning “inverted” off, this should result in the desired strong bass. A more detailed version of this method can be found in the “Fine Tuning” section of this manual.

20-30Hz Level
20-30Hz is a range of sound where peaks and dips often develop in a listening room. If low-bass sounds weak, increase this control. If low-bass sounds bloated, decrease this control. This setting can be used in conjunction with ARC Genesis or independently to compensate for room anomalies or modify sound to personal taste.

Room Correction
This allows you to toggle ARC Genesis on or off once the correction has been uploaded to the subwoofer. This is an alternate location for the toggle switch seen on the main page of the app and simply duplicated here for convenience.

The following settings must be accessed via the “Settings” tab of the Paradigm subwoofer control app. This offers maximum convenience by enabling the adjustment of these settings from anywhere within range of the subwoofer. This also makes adjustments much more accurate as you can listen in real time from your listening position as you make changes in the app.

Passcode
Protect the subwoofer’s settings with a custom 4-digit passcode. Once a passcode is set, it can also be cleared on this screen. A passcode is helpful in preventing others in the home from making changes to your preferred settings.

Rename
Assigning a custom name to the subwoofer is useful if you have multiple in your system. Names must be between 3-13 characters long.

Reset
This menu allows you to perform a factory reset of all subwoofer settings. The subwoofer will be returned to its default settings.

Information
Allows you to view the subwoofer Model, Brand, Serial#, Firmware version and app version at a glance.

FINE TUNING

Once you have your speakers positioned in the room and have set speaker distances and speaker level calibration with your Processor or A/V Receiver, it’s time for a little fine tuning.
When fine tuning your subwoofer to best integrate with the rest of your system, use music and video soundtracks that you know well. They should contain selections with extended bass that is continuous and repetitive.
Assess subwoofer bass output for best blend with your main speakers. It should not be overbearing or draw attention to itself, nor should it be thin and difficult to hear. It should add ‘weight’ and ‘punch’ to the overall sound and keep pace with your main speakers.
If you are using a receiver, preamplifier or preamp/processor with tone controls, set them to flat (i.e. ‘0’) and switch loudness controls off.
Some subwoofer locations may result in bass frequency cancellations. If bass sounds dislocated or weak, adjust the phase according to the Phase Alignment Control instructions repeated in more detail below. If your electronics have an “auto phase/auto time alignment” feature for subwoofers, this manual process can likely be ignored.

  1. Wire the Front speaker that is closest to the subwoofer out of phase (reverse red and black speaker wire connections) and then safely disconnect the other Front speaker so it does not play during this process.
    Note: If using multiple subwoofers, you can either choose to continue using the same Front speaker the whole time, or pause and repeat Step 1 again so that you are always using the Front speaker closest to the subwoofer. There are several variations of this technique where you perform this process by wiring both Front speakers out of phase (instead of disconnecting one) or even using just the Center channel or other channel closest to each sub. For the sake of this write up, we are assuming you are using the same Front speaker (with reversed polarity) the whole time.

  2. Play a test tone (with your system in Stereo mode if it is a multichannel system) equal to your chosen low pass filter as selected in the subwoofer control app or your electronics connected to the subwoofer if using the LFE Input(s) on the XR subwoofer.

  3. All listening/measurement should be done from the main listening position and with only 1 subwoofer at a time. Balancing the speaker volume and subwoofer volume using an SPL meter (or your system’s automatic setup microphone) ahead of time is recommended.

  4. With the Front speaker polarity reversed, and the other speaker disconnected, listen from your primary listening position while slowly adjusting the subwoofer phase control until the sound is the most quiet to you. Ideally, the subwoofer and speaker will cancel each other out and the cancellation should be noticeable resulting in very little or no sound.

  5. Once this point has been found, simply repeat the process for each subwoofer in the system making sure only 1 speaker and 1 sub are playing during the test.

  6. Now rewire the Front Speaker back to normal polarity (positive to positive/negative to negative) and properly reconnect any speakers or subwoofers that were disconnected previously.

ARC GENESIS CALIBRATION

A TRUE AUDIOPHILE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE ROOM:
Step-by-step instructions for using ARC Genesis are included in the following section but before you begin, a little about how ARC works on your room and what makes it better than any other digital room correction system in the world:

  • ARC Genesis is a state-of-the-art room correction system that analyzes the speaker’s response in your room, then sets the correct equalization parameters to attain optimal sound. Essentially creating a custom DSP for your exact speaker and room in real time!
  • ARC Genesis applies Super-Efficient Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) Filters in addition to Paradigm’s Custom Filter Topology to minimize delay and reduce processing gain noise. The combination of limiting the widths of our IIR filters and applying our topology means that any artifacts that might have resulted from the filtering process are so small as to be completely inaudible.
  • ARC Genesis provides for multiple user-selected measurement points (we suggest a minimum of five, but up to ten can be measured), beginning with a measurement at the primary listening position and then moving across the listening area. This process is critical to properly dealing with standing waves and ensuring optimal bass performance throughout the listening area. With ARC Genesis, there are no “bad seats!”
  • Unlike many “Room EQ” systems, ARC Genesis applies correction to peaks (modes) and dips (anti-modes). Tackling both allows us to achieve a far more accurate and natural room response. To limit the demands on the amplifier, and maximize signal-to-noise ratio, ARC Genesis applies appropriate limits to this correction.
  • ARC Genesis is ultra-accurate! The connected computers 64-bit floating-point processor does the hard work of calculating the correction curves, which greatly minimizes rounding errors of the less sophisticated “calculators” built into common AVR’s.
  • It’s easy to use (we’ve done the hard work!). Many years of intensive research, development, and refinement on our part have made it a snap to attain incredible performance in any room! All that’s required is a PC (system requirements here) or Mac (OS requirement here) and the included ARC Genesis Microphone.

NOTE: *As new PC and Mac operating systems become available, ARC Genesis will be updated. Go to https://anthemarc.com/downloads/index.php to download the compatible version, following the procedure for ‘Installing the Software’ (see page 13).

YOUR XR SUBWOOFER INCLUDES

HOW DOES ARC GENESIS DO WHAT IT DOES?
The process starts when a test signal is sent from your computer to the subwoofer and the signal is picked up by the microphone. The system puts the subwoofer through a series of frequency sweeps to highlight problem areas and determine necessary adjustments. It asks you to position the microphone in at least 5 different locations. Configurations are then saved on the connected PC. The optimized solutions are calculated, then uploaded to the subwoofer and the calculated room corrections are put in place.Paradigm-XR11,-XR13

GETTING STARTED

Begin with the suggested locations for subwoofer placement given at the beginning of this manual then connect your subwoofer following the instructions given in the section entitled “Subwoofer Connection”. Once your subwoofer is connected, you are ready to install the ARC Genesis software, available for free download from the ARC Genesis website here: https://anthemarc.com/downloads/index.php.

BEFORE STARTING THE PROCEDURE, NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Although systems vary, in general, if your home theater receiver/processor also has a Room Correction system, ARC should be setup and running before setting up your system’s ‘EQ’, especially if more than one subwoofer will be in use.
IMPORTANT! Don’t stand too close to the microphone or make noise when sweep tones are playing (it would be best to keep younger or talkative family members and even pets out of hearing range). The program rejects continuous background noise (i.e. fans) but will give an error messages requiring re- measurement upon sudden noise.

THE PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT! During the measurement process, the mic must point toward the ceiling, positioned at ear level when you are seated.

  1. position microphone on or near the first position (see diagram on page 16). Remove cushions from seating, if necessary, to attain correct height. To adjust the height of the telescoping stand, loosen the large black clamp in the middle of the stand by rotating it counter-clockwise; retighten once desired height has been achieved. Five listening positions are normally measured but this number can be increased to ten positions (see diagram on page 16) —the first position must be at or just in front of the central seating position. Positions 2 and 3 should be symmetric to the left and right of the center line. The same applies to the remaining positions.
    IMPORTANT: Even if your room has less than five seating positions, to ensure optimal sound, measurements must be taken from five different listening positions. Each position should be at least 2 feet (60 cm) apart.

  2. Set the microphone in the first position;

  3. Run ARC Genesis on your computer. The program will guide you through the steps and at the conclusion, will give you the option to load the correction data into your subwoofer. The entire measurement process takes about 5 minutes.

  4. Once the ARC Genesis program is finished, you can disconnect the computer from the microphone and subwoofer.

LIMITED WARRANTY

Paradigm® XRTM subwoofers covered in this manual are warranted to be and remain free of manufacturing and/or material defects for a period of three (3) years from the date of original purchase. Within the time period specified, repair, replacement or adjustment of parts for manufacturing and/or material defects will be free of charge to the original owner.
Thermal or mechanical abuse/misuse is not covered under warranty.

LIMITATIONS:

  • Warranty begins on date of original retail purchase from an Authorized Paradigm® Dealer only. It is not transferable;
  • Warranty applies to product in normal home use only. If product is subjected to any of the conditions outlined in the next section, warranty is void;
  • Warranty does not apply if the product is used in professional or commercial applications.

WARRANTY IS VOID IF:

  • The product has been abused (intentionally or accidentally)
  • The product has been used in conjunction with unsuitable or faulty equipment;
  • The product has been subjected to damaging signals, derangement in transport, mechanical damage or any abnormal conditions;
  • The product (including cabinet) has been tampered with or damaged by an unauthorized service facility;
  • The serial number has been removed or defaced.

OWNER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide normal/reasonable operating care and maintenance;
  • Provide or pay for transportation charges for product to service facility;
  • Provide proof of purchase (your sales receipt given at time of purchase from your Authorized Paradigm® Dealer must be retained for proof-of-purchase date).

Should servicing be required, contact your nearest Authorized Paradigm® Dealer, Paradigm Electronics Inc. or Import Distributor (outside the U.S. and Canada) to arrange, bring in or ship prepaid, any defective unit. Visit our website, paradigm.com for more information.
Paradigm Electronics Inc. reserves the right to improve the design of any product without assuming any obligation to modify any product previously manufactured.
This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied, of merchantability, fitness for any particular purpose and may not be extended or enlarged by anyone. In no event shall Paradigm Electronics Inc., their agents or representatives be responsible for any incidental or consequential damages. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so this exclusion may not apply to you.
Retain this manual and your sales receipt for proof of warranty term and proof of purchase.
