Safety Information for Tillers
Introduction
This chapter describes the general safety instructions preformulated in the standard EN 709:1997 + A4:2009 for petrol-driven tillers.
WARNING
- Read all the safety instructions, instructions, illustrations and technical data provided with the tiller. Failure to comply with the following instructions may cause electrical shock, fire and/or serious injury. Keep all safety instructions and instructions for the future.
General Information
-
Read the instruction manual carefully.
Ensure that you are familiar with the controls and proper use of the machine. -
Never allow children or other persons who are not familiar with the instruction manual to use the machine. Local regulations may specify a minimum age for users.
-
Never work in the vicinity of other persons, particularly children, or pets.
-
Be aware that the person operating the machine or the user is responsible for accidents involving third parties or damage to their property.
Preparatory Measures
- Always wear robust shoes and long trousers when working. Never operate the machine barefoot or in lightweight sandals.
- Inspect the area on which the machine is to be used and remove any objects that could be thrown up by the machine.
- WARNING – petrol is extremely inflammable:
- Fuel must only be stored in appropriate containers.
- Refuel out of doors only and do not smoke during filling.
- Re-filling with petrol must be performed before the engine is started. Never open the tank cap or top up petrol while the engine is running or hot.
- If the petrol tank overflows, do not attempt to start the engine. The machine must be removed from the area contaminated with petrol. All attempts at starting must be avoided until the petrol fumes have dispersed.
- For safety reasons, petrol tanks and tank caps must be replaced (regularly).
- Replace damaged exhaust silencers.
- Before using the machine, always visually inspect the tools for wear or damage. To avoid imbalance, worn or damaged parts and retaining pins must be replaced in pairs.
Handling
- Do not run the engine in an enclosed space where dangerous carbon monoxide may accumulate.
- Only work during the day or when there is enough light.
- Always ensure good stability on slopes.
- Only work at walking speed.
- For machines on wheels: only work at rightangles to and never up or down the slope.
- Be particularly careful when changing direction on a slope.
- Do not mow on excessively steep slopes.
- Be particularly careful when turning the machine around or pulling it towards you.
- Do not alter the basic setting of the engine or run it at excessive engine speeds.
- Start the engine carefully in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and keep your feet a safe distance from the tool(s).
- Never put hands or feet on or underneath rotating parts.
- Never lift or carry a machine with the engine running.
- The engine must be stopped:
- if you leave the machine;
- before you refuel.
- The throttle valve must be closed when the engine is running on. If the machine has a petrol shut-off valve, it must be closed after working.
Maintenance and Storage
- Always make sure that all nuts, pins and bolts are securely tightened so the machine is in a safe operating condition.
- Never store the machine with petrol in the tank inside a building in which the petrol fumes could come into contact with naked flames or sparks or could be ignited.
- Allow the engine to cool down before storing the machine in an enclosed space.
- In order to prevent fire hazards, keep the engine and exhaust free from plant trimmings or leaking lubricant.
- In the interests of safety, replace all worn or damaged parts.
- If it is necessary to drain the tank, this must be done out of doors.
