According to the product descriptions, the headlamps and flashlights require AAA batteries, whereas the two lantern variants (140 and 400 lumens) need AA batteries. Its puzzling why, unless the lanterns have changed since November of 2019, a Vont Customer Service agent would state the opposite. Unfortunately, the Q&A section appears to include a number of products; however the battery-related product descriptions are fairly clear.

The lamp is always “full” on, but you can change the brightness by pulling up on the top handle; for example, you can open it up a quarter of an inch or a third of an inch to the brightness you need.

No. Light intensity is influenced by how wide you open the light (it sides up and down). When you raise the lamp, it turns on.
How many lamps do you plan to buy?****
Four different lamps, for each, all batteries are supplied.

The brightness of the light is controlled by how far you draw the light out; it does not actually have a dimmer (how much is exposed). In order to see how long the batteries survive, I haven’t left it running.
Travelling to Africa to work in a community under the scorching heat What issues should I be worried about with this lantern?****
Although these lanterns are bright and sturdy and probably won’t cause any harm, I wouldn’t leave them in the hot sun. I think they’ll be fine if you put them in the shade. I’d strongly advise bringing these lights to Africa.

No special batteries are required. The battery’s use depends on how often you use it. The battery can last for a very long time because it speaks and closes so easily. Additionally, if you reside in a place that is really cold, I would personally remove the batteries whenever I wasn’t using the lamp.
