Introduction
Your desired Philips Hue Smart Lights, both indoor and outdoor, are immediately turned on by the Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor. The sensor recognizes fluctuations in infrared radiation in its surroundings; enabling it to recognize human movement and turn on the lights automatically (sensor motion sensitivity can be adjusted in the app). You can control which Philips Hue lights turn on inside and outside your home by connecting the motion sensor to your Hue hub using the Philips Hue app. additionally, decide which scenario or light setting should be activated. You may save energy by having your lights only turn on when it is truly dark outside thanks to the integrated dusk-to-dawn sensor.
This Philips Hue outdoor sensor has undergone extensive testing to guarantee that it performs as intended for use in outside settings. The UL-certified product can survive extreme weather, including torrential rain. It has 39 ft. x 8 foot detection radius, 160 degree horizontal view angle, and 80 degree vertical view angle. It offers far-reaching and close-proximity optimized (entering and leaving home). You are able to mount the motion sensor on a corner as well as a flat wall. The system voltage for the product is 110V.
HOW TO CONNECT AN ACCESSORY TO HUE SYSTEM
- Get the Hue app open.
- Select the Accessories option under the Settings menu.
- Click Add accessory.
- Outdoor Hue sensor: tap.
- The set-up button is accessible by removing the wall mount from the back of the outdoor sensor.
- As soon as the outdoor sensor begins to blink, press and hold the setup button.
- Follow the instructions displayed on the screen after the Hue app has located the motion sensor. You can choose which Room or Zone the motion sensor monitors and what occurs when it is activated.
HOW TO KNOW IF MOTION SENSOR IS WORKING
When you walk in front of your motion sensor, the home button on your panel will blink yellow. Every time a motion signal is sent, this will happen. By doing so, you can test the sensor’s ability to detect movement and learn more about its range.
HOW TO CHANGE THE SENSOR SETTINGS
- Open the Hue app.
- Settings > My Devices can be tapped or clicked.
- Decide which Hue Security Light you wish to modify.
- Click or tap Dusk to Dawn Sensor.
- The ambient light sensitivity level can be changed by sliding the slider.
- Click or tap “Done.”
HOW TO RESET
- Simply removing the Hue app will remove the motion sensor.
- Hold down the setup button for 10 seconds, or until the sensor’s LED light changes from red to orange and blinks, signaling that the sensor has been reset and is ready to pair once more.
FAQs
Any way to keep the floodlights on (at a dim level) and they get brighter when detecting motion. AND off altogether if it’s daylight?****
YES!! I do this! It took me an hour or two of playing around with it to figure out the best way to accomplish this, so I’ll just tell you to save you some time.
How long will the battery last?****
About 2-3 years.
Can I use this to trigger other smart outlets?****
It depends. I don’t know how home automation works with android, but Phillips Hue is Apple HomeKit compatible. The sensor shows up as 3 sensors in the Apple Home app, motion sensor, light/lux sensor, and temperature sensor. You can create automation rules in Apple Home that can control any HomeKit compatible outlet. I don’t know if Phillips Hue has released any smart outlets (pretty sure they just do lighting), but if so then you could probably create a routine for it in the Hue app.
Do you have hard wired version? Normally the sensor is mounted somewhere out of reach. Why anyone would wants to change battery periodically?****
No one WANTS to change a battery periodically but if there is no available outlet, it’s better than nothing. And every couple of years is no big deal. (Plus it looks much better if there is no electrical cord running down the side of your house.)
Does it have to be wired or is it batter operated?****
It has to be wired.
I have dogs; will they be detected running around at night as well?****
I have this motion sensor on my porch and it detects squirrels and cats, so I’m certain dogs would be detected. Now I have not gone in and tried to adjust any settings on it, as I don’t have a Phillips hub to tweak this, as this motion sensor just connects to a different hub I have, but it works great and has been awesome thus far and has helped to eliminate the false positives I was getting with my Wyze cam motion detection so that now I’m just getting relevant motion detection events. If you have the Phillips hub, you might be able to reduce the sensitivity of the motion sensor so it would not pick up your dogs, but since I don’t have that to test, I cannot say for sure if that would be true or not.
Can the outdoor sensor turn on Hue lights at dusk and turn them off at dawn?****
ENHANCE YOUR SMART HOME EXPERIENCE: The Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor detects outdoor motion and can trigger both Philips Hue Indoor and Outdoor lights. Set your Hue sensor to welcome you or guests home with lights, or detect intruders or potential package thieves with pre-set light scenes, Philips Hue Hub and Hue Smart lights required and sold separately, Works with Apple HomeKit
Is this outdoor sensor HomeKit compatible?****
Yes! I’m using it with HomeKit and it rings on Apple Watch when it detects motion, and lights up a light inside the house as well as the outside ones.
Would swaying plants, outdoor verandah blinds etc. constantly trigger this?****
My sensor is occasionally triggered on windy days by tree branches. Depends on how much movement, the distance from the sensor and the sensitivity setting you set in the unit. I set mine more than 50%.
Can I use this to turn on lighting when it gets dark outside (rainy weather, after sunset, etc.)?****
I have had mine for several years so it may have changed. This sensor activates lights in conjunction with the HUE hub when motion is detected. It will not turn on the lights if sufficient sunlight exists. It will turn on lights based on the criteria you set in the device definition. Mine has been very reliable.
I want this to control spot lights on my driveway. Can you adjust the position so it won’t trigger as cars in the street pass by?****
It’s only got a range of less than 5 meters so unless you’re right on a street, passing cars won’t affect it. You can mount it on just about any wall. It only triggers as I come within range of it.
It says batteries not included or needed, but the power source is electric (3 volt). Where does it get its power from? Is battery replaceable?****
The sensor uses AA batteries. They are technically “replaceable”, but removing the battery cover is very difficult. The battery is functionally not user- replaceable and you need to contact support (within 2 years) to replace the whole sensor whenever the batteries die.
Does this really work with Homekit? I bought one and couldn’t get it to work even though my other indoor sensors and bulbs all work great with Homekit?****
It shows the info on home kit but I program them on the Phillips hue app as this works better. It does seem like there are a few kinks to work out to smoothly integrate the two systems though.
Can someone clarify how the light sensitivity works? Are headlights from cars actually able to set it off? + All the way vs – how should it react?****
Yes, even on the lowest sensitivity setting, headlights from cars will set it off.
