General description

The ABRASION INDEX TESTER is a process and laboratory machine, which is designed to determine the abrasion index of a mineral sample to be determined in accordance with F.C. Bond´s abrasion test method. The abrasion index tester utilizes an electrically driven drum and rotating abrasion paddle. The mineral sample is lifted by a mesh drum liner and dropped on to the steel paddle, which rotates in the same direction. The paddle is made to exacting standards of material and size and two square inches of this is exposed to wear. After running the test, the weight loss of the paddle is noted in grams, this represents the Abrasion Index (Ai) of the material.

Installation

4.1 Unpacking
Before the installation, carefully examine the delivery for possible damage or missing parts. Open the box and take the machine out of the box. Check that the machine has not been visibly damaged during the transport. Please keep the packing material for the duration of the guarantee period. In case of a complaint and return of the machine in unsuitable packing material, your guarantee claim will be lost. Check that the mains cord is compatible with the local standard. If any kind of damage occurred during transport, immediately make a complaint to the carrier. Any incorrect delivery or missing parts should be reported to the distributor.
After unpacking the machine open the front door to get acces to the black key for all small cover locks.
Use this key to access the back plate of the machine. Here there is a box situated with the paddles and the bottles needed for processing.

4.3 Connecting the power cord
The correct voltage and frequency for the ABRASION INDEX TESTER are given on the name plate. Ensure that these values correspond to the available power supply system.
Connect the power cord to a grounded wall socket. To avoid interference from noise, surges and spikes, a dedicated line is preferred. If no such line is available, avoid lines to which powerful electric motors, refrigerators and similar devices are connected.
The power can be turned on and off by the Emergency POWER switch, located on the left side of the housing of the machine.

4.2 Selecting the right place
When selecting the right place for the machine, please consider the following:

  • Put the device on smooth, straight and stable table or frame.
  • Make sure the bottom plate is situated at the edge of the table so that the hole in the product drawer can be pulled outside of the table platform.
  • Leave enough space beyond the device.
  • Leave enough space around the device, that you will easy control and maintain it.
  • Don’t use the device in surroundings, where there are fast temperature and humidity changes. Also avoid places exposed to direct sunlight and places nearby heating devices.

4.4 Enviroment conditions
The machine has been built for operating in process and laboratory environment. Therefore the environmental conditions should be the following:

  • Temperature from C to C
  • Humidity up to 85% RH, non-condensing
  • POWER switch (on the right side of ABRASION INDEX TESTER – switches ONor OFF the power of the machine.
  • Green button – Start button
  • Timer Display

Starting of the machine is possible only with the hood closed. Always start and stop the machine with START and Emergency key.

5.3 Inserting the mesh lifter
Ensure that a new test paddle is fitted to the rotor and securely clamped. Ensure that exactly 2” of this paddle protrudes from the rotor. Note that although the rotor has two sockets for paddle plates only one is to be fitted. Ensure that the capscrew on the empty socket is securely fixed to keep dirt out of the threads the charge as shown close the lid and secure it firmly.LAARMANN BAT1000 Bond Abrasion Tester - Figure

Procedure

6.1 General
The ABRASION INDEX TESTER is a high performance product. The ABRASION INDEX TESTER is a machine which can be used in laboratories, industry and research. It is used mainly for mineralogical applications etc

6.2 Procedure

  1. The operator can use the bottle with adapted flange to insert the product into the machine. This way the operator has the opportunity to leave the mesh in the machine making sure no product gets away.
  2. The operator needs to close the access hole before running the machine as well as the door to make sure the machine is safe to run.
  3. Now the machine van be used to perform the test. The operator needs to run the automatic program to follow the BOND Index Abrasion norm.
  4. After a run the operator needs to loosen the clamps making it possible to lift out the mesh ring and get access to the processed product.
  5. The processed product can be dropped into the drawer where the operator can use the bottle with the flange again to collect the processed material.
  6. Now the operator can take action wit the paddle according to the BOND Index Abrasion norm.
  7. Repeat step 1 to 6 to complete the BOND Index Abrasion test.

6.3 Maintenance
ABRASION INDEX TESTER is maintenance free. When used properly, no maintenance and setting is necessary. Do not make any alterations to the machine and use only approved spare parts and accessories.
6.4 Wear
Replace the abrasion paddle after each test and control the grid on the inside on wearing. When worn, please replace the
6.5 Cleaning

Before cleaning the machine, unplug the mains cord from wall socket. Use only a soft cloth moistened with water. Cleaning agents and solvents should not be used, not for cleaning the milling tools either.
Do not clean the ABRASION INDEX TESTER under running water. Danger to life through electric shock.
