HARVIA 071621 Harvi Garden Instruction Manual
Hi! Welcome To The Harvi Gardens Community!
Congratulations on getting your Harvi. It’s time to get growing. Setting up your Harvi Garden is as easy as can be. Find a level spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, put your Harvi Garden together in the configuration that suits you, fill it with soil (or other growing media) and water, and you’re good to grow. Then it’s just plant, tend and harvest.
What’s In This Box Anyway?
Your Harvi Garden is pretty simple, but there are a few important parts. In the box you’ll find:
SELF-WATERING
ANTI-TIP WALL ANCHORING
STACKING KIT
Let’s Put It Together
PART 1
Check The Reservoir Cap
-
The large reservoir cap is located in the center of the inside of your garden bed. It comes pre-fitted into the garden bed, but can be removed later for cleaning.
The cap is a friction fit, so to make sure it’s seated properly, give it a firm press. -
There are two internal overflows built into the bottom of your Harvi Garden, once the reservoir is full, additional water will flow out of these holes.
PART 2
The Capillary Matting
The capillary mat is key to your Harvi Garden’s self-watering function, so getting it installed is important, but easy.
- Place the capillary mat into the base of your Harvi Garden. Make sure that the mat is spread evenly inside the garden bed and that the mat is pushed down into the troughs at the bottom.
- Wet the entire capillary mat with water to help activate the capillary action and flatten the mat before adding soil.
PART 3
Filling Your Harvi With Soil
Because Harvi is made from food grade polymer, it’s compatible with a wide variety of composts, soils and other growing media. Your local garden center is a wonderful resource for specific information about growing media and fertilizer choices.
- Start by adding a small amount of soil. Spread it out over the capillary mat, making sure that the mat gets pushed down into the troughs in the bottom of the bed so the self-watering irrigation system works efficiently.
- Continue filling the Harvi Garden evenly with soil.
- Fill soil to the line on the inside of the garden bed that sits approximately 1.5” from the top rim.
PART 4
Basic Planting Advice
We recommend growing from seedlings. It’s much easier than growing from seed. Of course, if you’re an old green thumb, Harvi Gardens love seeds too.
Things To Consider
Your Space
Make sure your garden gets the right amount of sunlight for the plants you’re
growing.
Growing Zone & Season
Make the most of your location and the time of year.
What You Like To Eat
This one is the most important!
Give ‘em Some Space
Just like us, plants need room to grow, and some more than others. One of the
most common gardening mistakes is cramming too many plants too close together.
Remember that little seedling is going to turn into a big tomato vine, a huge
head of lettuce, or a hearty wall of kale … you get the idea.
Have a great harvest!
PART 5
Filling Your Harvi With Water
Your Harvi has an amazing self-watering system with an internal reservoir
capacity of 1.5 gallons.
Make sure that it’s on a level surface to ensure the irrigation system works
efficiently.
Add water using any of the six open holes on the top rim of your Harvi Garden.
Do not water the corner holes.
You can also add water directly to the soil in the garden and any excess will flow through the soil into the reservoir.
Choosing The Perfect Location
Most vegetables and fruits need plenty of sunshine, ideally around eight hours of full sun each day. The more sun, the better, so it makes sense to put your Harvi Garden in the sunniest space you have available.
If you’re in a cooler climate, you can maximize sunshine by putting the garden against a wall that faces the midday sun.
In hot climates you may need to provide some summer shade. Using shade cloth or the shadows of taller climbing plants like beans will give you more growing options.
If you only have a shady spot, there are plenty of crops that thrive in partial shade – particularly leafy vegetables, such as chard, spinach and salad greens.
Stacking the Garden
Configuration Guide
If you purchased multiple Harvi Gardens, or extender legs, you can stack them together in all kinds of ways to fit your space.
Here are a few of our favorite combinations:
Raising Your Harvi Garden With Extension Legs
The optional extender legs attach to your Harvi Garden’s legs and raise the bed an extra 15.5 inches.
To attach the legs, fit the base of your Harvi Garden’s legs into the large opening on the extender legs. Press them firmly together for a secure fit.
Assemble The Connector Pieces
Each connector piece comes in 2 identical halves that snap together.
Each half piece has 2 holes on one end and 2 prongs on the other.
Orient the pieces so that the holes and prongs line up with each other then press together.
Stacking Harvi Gardens Together
To stack multiple garden beds together, push assembled connector pieces into the holes on the bottom garden bed corresponding to your stacking arrangement.
Place the holes in the legs of the top garden bed onto the exposed end of the connector pieces in the bottom garden. Press down on the top garden bed until the connector pieces are fully inserted.
Use four corners to stack one garden directly on top of another.
Use extension legs when stacking the garden beds in a stepped arrangement
Please use the anti-tilt wall anchoring kit to secure your garden when stacking and/or raising it.
Maximum Stacking Height
There is an increased risk of tilt when stacking a garden bed on top of a fully raised garden bed with four extension legs.
We strongly recommend securing your garden bed with an anti-tilt wall anchoring kit in this scenario.
The maximum stacking height is 3 gardens directly stacked on top of each other or any combination of 3 gardens on top of each other.
Make sure your Harvi Garden stack is securely anchored, otherwise it may tip over and cause injury.
If you’re anchoring your Harvi Garden stack to a railing, make sure the top bed does not exceed the height of the railing.
Do not stack 2 fully raised Garden beds with 4 extension legs.
Also, do not use an extension leg to extend an extension leg
Wall Anchoring
Once your Harvi Garden is full of soil, water and plants, it can get pretty heavy. Especially when you’re stacking multiple garden beds together, it’s important to make sure everything is anchored securely to prevent the risk of a tip-over.
If Your Anchor Surface Has A Wide Flat Area:
Attach one anti-tip plate to the wall or surface at the same height as the top
rim of your garden bed using the screws in the anti-tip wall anchoring kit.
This may require drilling holes and using appropriate anchors if necessary.
Your Harvi Garden has a large hole in each rear corner and two smaller holes in the rim on the back side of the bed. Pass a cable tie through each large hole in the top rim of the garden bed and out through the smaller hole.
Pass the loose end of the cable tie through the loop in the anti-tip plate affixed to the wall.
Secure the cable tie, connecting the garden and the anti-tip plate.
Repeat on the other corner of the garden.
Pull cable ties tight until secure, but not so tight as to make the garden bed(s) lean towards the wall. You may need to leave a little slack.
To anchor your Harvi Garden, place it by a wall, railing, or other sturdy surface. Only the topmost bed needs to be secured.
If You’re Anchoring The Garden To A Railing:
Slip one cable tie into the large corner hole on the rim that’s closest to the railing and out the smaller hole.
Pass the loose end around the railing.
Secure the cable tie, connecting the garden and the railing.
Repeat on the other corner of the garden.
Pull cable ties tight until secure, but not so tight as to make the garden bed(s) lean towards the wall. You may need to leave a little slack.
If you’re stacking multiple gardens together, attach anti-tip anchors in line with the top garden bed and make sure it does not exceed the height of the railing.
Cleaning And Caring For Your Harvi Garden
Your Harvi Garden is almost entirely maintenance free, but it may require cleaning on occasion. The external surface is easily cleaned with warm, soapy water. It is also safe and effective to use a hose to clean your Harvi Garden. The capillary mat can also be cleaned by rinsing it with water. Don’t use chemical or abrasive cleaners.
Cleaning The Internal Water Reservoir
From time to time you may wish to clean out the raised garden internal water reservoir.
- Unstack or separate multiple garden beds.
- Completely empty your Harvi Garden of all growing media. Remove the capillary matting.
- Remove the reservoir cap carefully by prising open from the lip with a penny or flat head screwdriver.
- Run water through the reservoir or wash out with a hose.
- To help wash particulates out of the reservoir, it may help to turn it upside down.
- After cleaning, place the reservoir cap back in the bed and make sure it’s correctly seated.
