General notes
Compliance with the following instructions is mandatory to ensure the functionality and safety of the product. If the following instructions given especially but not limited for general safety, transport, storage, mounting, operating conditions, start-up, maintenance, repair, cleaning and disposal / recycling are not observed, the product may not operate safely and may cause a hazard to the life and limb of users and third parties. Deviations from the following requirements may therefore lead both to the loss of the statutory material defect liability rights and to the liability of the buyer for the product that has become unsafe due to the deviation from the specifications.

Before installation and start-up, read this assembly instructions carefully to ensure correct use!
We emphasize that these assembly instructions apply to specific units only, and are in no way valid for the complete system! Use these assembly instructions to work safely with and on the device. They contain safety instructions that must be complied with as well as information that is required for failure-free operation of the device.
Keep these assembly instructions together with the device. It must be ensured that all persons that are to work on the device can refer to the assembly instructions at any time. Keep the assembly instructions for continued use. They must be passed-on to all successive owners, users and final customers.
Target group
The assembly instructions address persons entrusted with planning, installation, commissioning and maintenance and servicing and who have the corresponding qualifications and skills for their job.
Exclusion of liability
Concurrence between the contents of these assembly instructions and the described hardware and software in the device has been examined. It is still possible that noncompliance’s exist; no guarantee is assumed for complete conformity. To allow for future developments, construction methods and technical data given are subject to alteration.

Safety instructions
Attention!
- Non-compliance with the information and safety instructions listed in these assembly instructions can cause serious health and safety risks!
Be aware of the following Points:
- The fans are intended exclusively for use in zone 1 and 2 explosive atmospheres for gases (see rating plate).
- The conveyance of solid matter or solids content in the conveying medium is not permissible and can lead to dangerous situations. ZIEHL-ABEGG rejects any liability for damage of any kind as a result of such use.
- The temperature classes of fan and motor are allowed to be different, but they must be defined according to the ignition temperature of conveying media.
- The fans must be operated in the temperature ranges specified on the rating plate.
- Assembly and electrical connection may only be carried out by skilled personnel in compliance of applicable standards and these assembly instructions.
- Start-up and maintenance of the device may only be carried out by skilled personnel, who have completed ATEX training for correct performance of their work.
- The motor overheating protection equipment must be connected. Improper connection will invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty. Furthermore, this might lead to explosion hazards.
- Protection of the motor against unusual heating according to EN 60204 must be ensured.
- If the fan is accessible, guard grilles complying with EN 13857 must be installed. These must not be changed and must be adequately secured.
- Pay attention to objects at a greater height which might fall down.
- Pay special attention to material combinations according to EN 14986.
- Since a residual risk due to falling objects, incorrect behaviour, etc. cannot be completely ruled out, the designer, operator or manufacturer of the installation or system in which the fan is to be installed, must prevent any potentially hazardous situation from arising by means of appropriate safety measures in line with standard EN ISO 12100 and especially standard EN 14986.
- The operator is responsible for maintenance of the fan.
- Compliance with the EMC Directive only exists if the fan is directly connected to the main power supply. If the fan is installed in a system or combined with other products, the system manufacturer is responsible for compliance with the EMC Directive.
Responsibility of users
- The owner or operator must ensure that the equipment (fan and electrical system) is used according to the description in these instructions and kept in good operating condition.
- The user shall only put the fan into operation after it has been properly installed.
- The fan must be operated in accordance with the assembly instructions.
- To ensure operability, safety devices (especially the overheating protection equipment) must be checked regularly.
- The instructions for installation and use must be complete and available to users at any time.
- Users must be trained with regard to the hazards associated with the operation of an installation in an explosive atmosphere and the intended use of the installation.
- No safety and warning instructions on the fan may be removed, and the user must make sure that they are legible.
- The persons responsible for the installation, start-up, operation and maintenance of the device must be competent and possess sufficient experience to correctly perform their work.
- In addition, they must know the European standards and guidelines (at national and regional level and if applicable the in-house regulations) for safety and hazard prevention. A new user may only work under the supervision of an experienced operator.
- This device must not be used by persons with limited physical and mental abilities. Moreover, the minimum legal age must be observed, the users must be adequately trained.
Intended use
Attention!
- The motor impellers are only intended for conveyance of air or mixtures similar to air.
- Only motor impellers with Ex marking can be used for conveyance of or installed in an explosive atmosphere.
- Any other use above and beyond this is considered not for the intended purpose unless agreed otherwise by contract. The manufacturer will not be liable for any damage resulting from this. The individual or company using it bears the sole risk.
- Reading these document and complying with all contained instructions -especially the safety notifications contained therein -are considered part of intended use.
- To consider is also the documentation of attached components.
The following application limits apply to ZIEHL-ABEGG centrifugal motorised impellers suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres:
- maximum pumped medium temperature in the range from -20…+40 °C
- maximum absolute pressure in the range from 0.8 to 1.1 bar
- maximum part by volume, oxygen 21 %
- maximum installation height 2000 m above mean sea level
In addition, a maximum drive motor ambient temperature of +40 °C must not be exceeded. In exceptional cases, motors may also be suitable for operation at ambient temperatures up to 60 °C (see motor rating plate) or installation at altitudes of more than 2000 m above sea level (in some cases with reduced power).
Hazards and intended use
Special hazards when operating in explosive atmospheres
When operating a fan in an explosive atmosphere and when conveying explosive gases with the fan, comply especially with the following potential hazards and ignition sources stated below:
- Contact between rotating parts (impeller) and stationary parts (inlet nozzle) can result in friction, grinding or impact sparks.
- Development of friction, grinding or impact sparks due to the intake of foreign bodies or through foreign bodies which fall into the fan.
- Development of sparks caused by the discharging or electrostatically charged components. Especially plastic surfaces and surfaces with high layer thickness are a hazard potential due to dust deposits.
- Hot surfaces, e.g. due to an overload or through frictional heat caused by contact of rotating parts with stationary parts.
- Strong vibrations (e.g., due to imbalance) which can lead to parts becoming hot (e.g., due to a bearing defect) or due to rotating and stationary parts touching each other.
- Release of an explosive atmosphere from the inside to the outside or from the outside to the inside, thus resulting in an explosive atmosphere (zone entrainment).
- The following sections explain additional risks and the required measures to minimise or avoid them.
Improper use / reasonably foreseeable misuse

Operation in or with an explosion protection zone for which the motor impeller is unsuitable because of its class, e.g. operation of a gas explosion protected motor impeller in a dust explosive area.

Operation in or with a medium for which the motor impeller is unsuitable due to its maximum surface temperature.
-
Conveyance of aggressive, corrosive, abrasive or adhesive media.
-
Conveyance of dust and media containing particles.
-
Transfer of solids or solids content in the transfer medium.
-
Operation on a frequency inverter for speed control.
Operation at unacceptably high speeds. The maximum permitted speed is specified on the rating plate. -
Operating conditions which are associated with impermissibly strong vibrations or which lead to exceeding the maximum permissible frequency of vibrations according to ISO 14694.

Use with vibration loading by customer device. Resonant operation and operation with severe vibrations or oscillation.
-
Use with direct contact with foodstuffs or cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
-
Use of the fan as an independent household appliance.
-
Operation with iced up impellers.
-
Conveyance of liquid media.
-
Use of the fan and add-on parts (e.g. guard grille) as a resting surface or climbing aid.
-
Operation of the fan as a safety component or for the performance of safety-relevant functions in the sense of EN ISO 13849-1.
-
Blocking or braking of the fan by inserting objects.
-
Loosening of fan blade, impeller and balancing weight.
-
Use as fire gas or smoke extraction fan.
-
All applications not listed in the intended use.

Fans and parts of fans must never be changed or altered without authorisation. The following measures apply, for instance, as non-intended:
- Removing or replacing components or individual parts of the fan with non-identical parts.
- Absence of loose accessories supplied, which are required to ensure intended use (e.g. inlet nozzles and protective grille).
- Drilling holes.
- Welding parts on.
- Modifying the coating (e.g. grinding off, painting over).
- Jobs or conditions which do not comply with the instructions stated in these operating instructions on storage, installation, transport, connection, maintenance, service, cleaning and which deviate with the special instructions on explosion protected fans listed below.
Attention!
Not the manufacturer, rather the operator of the device is liable for any personal harm or material damage arising from non-intended use.

Information
Important additional information and advice for user.
Product safety
The device conforms to the state of the art at the time of delivery and is fundamentally considered to be reliable. The device and its accessories must only be used in a flawless condition and installed and operated in compliance with the assembly instructions and/or operating instructions. Operating outside the device’s technical specifications (see name plate and attachment / technical data) can lead to a defect in the device and additional damage!
**** Information
A separate fault and performance monitoring-system with an alarm signal function is necessary in order to prevent personal injuries and material damages during malfunctions and in case the device fails. Substitute operation must be taken into consideration!
The design and installation of the system must comply with local regulations and directives.
Requirements placed on the personnel / due diligence
Persons entrusted with the planning, installation, commissioning and maintenance and servicing in connection with the frequency inverter must have the corresponding qualifications and skills for these jobs.
In addition, they must be knowledgeable about the safety regulations, directives, rules for the prevention of accidents and the corresponding national as well as regional and inhouse regulations.
Personnel to be trained or instructed and apprentices are only
permitted to work on the device under the supervision of an experienced person. This also applies to personnel undergoing general training. Comply with the legal minimum age.
Work on the device
Information
Mounting, electrical connection, and start-up operation may only be carried
out by an electrical specialist in accordance with electrotechnical
regulations (e.g. EN 50110 or EN 60204 / IEC 60204!
Only specifically qualified persons are permitted to perform any work on explosion protected devices (e.g. TRBS 1203, Section 3.1).
Danger due to electric current
- It is forbidden to carry out work on live device parts. The degree of protection for the open device is IP00! Potentially fatal voltages can be touched directly.
- The safe isolation from the supply must be checked using a two-pole voltage detector.
- Maintenance work may only be carried out by suitably qualified personnel.
Attention, automatic restart!
- The fan/motor may switch on and off automatically for functional reasons.
- After mains failure or mains disconnection an automatic restart of the fan takes place after voltage return! The fan must therefore be disconnected from voltage before doing any work.
- Wait for the fan to come to a complete standstill before approaching it!
Danger of being sucked in!
Do not wear loose or hanging clothing, jewellery, etc., tie together long hair
and cover it.
Modifications / interventions in the device
Attention!
For reasons of safety, no unauthorized interventions or modifications may be made on the device. All planned modifications must be authorized by the manufacturer in writing.
Use only genuine spare parts / genuine wearing parts / genuine accessories from ZIEHL-ABEGG.These parts were specifically designed for the device. There is no guarantee that parts from non-original sources are designed and manufactured in correspondence with load and safety requirements.
Parts and optional equipment not supplied by ZIEHL-ABEGG are not approved by ZIEHL-ABEGG for use.
Operator’s obligation of diligence
- The contractor or owner must also ensure that the electric systems and equipment are operated and maintained in accordance with electro-technical regulations.
- The owner is obliged to ensure that the device is operated in perfect working order only.
- The device may only be used as intended.
- You must periodically examine the safety equipment for their properly functioning condition.
- The assembly instructions and/or operating instructions are always readily available at the location where the device is being used, are complete and are in legible condition.
- These persons are regularly instructed in all applicable questions regarding occupational safety and environmental protection and are knowledgeable regarding the assembly instructions and/or operating instructions and, especially, are familiar with the safety instructions contained therein.
- All safety and warning notices attached to the device are never removed and remain legible.
Product overview
Application / operational area
ZIEHL-ABEGG centrifugal motorised impellers from the RE..P/RH..M model range (for type designation see rating plate) in explosion-proof design are not ready-to-use products, but are designed as components for ventilation devices, machines and systems.
They may only be operated when they are installed as intended and safety is ensured through the use of protective devices complying with DIN EN ISO 13857 / EN 60529 and the constructional explosion protection measures stipulated by EN 14986. The motor impellers are rated for S1 continuous service.
Scope of application
The motorised impellers satisfy the requirements of device group II in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU. The area of application is specified on the rating plate.
Explosion protection zone
The RE..P, RH..M motor impellers are only intended for conveyance of air or zone 1 and zone 2 explosive atmospheres. Conveyance of solids, solid parts or dust/air mixtures is not permitted.
Equipment class
EN 60079-0 Explosive atmospheres – Electrical equipment – General requirements, EN 60079-7 (Increased safety “e”) and all other standards relevant for explosion protected fan designs must be complied with. Thus, operation of RE..P and RH..M motor impellers in gases, vapours, mists or mixtures of these in category 2G (EPL Gb) and category 3G (EPL Gc) potentially explosive areas is permitted.
Temperature class
The maximum surface temperature is determined by the temperature classes (T3 or T4) specified on the rating plate.
The system manufacturer or operator must ensure that the maximum permitted surface temperature and the temperatures of attached devices do not exceed the T3 or T4 temperature class of the motor impeller and that the ambient air is not above 60 % of the maximum permitted ignition temperature due to the volume flow rate around the motor.
According to DIN EN ISO 80079-36 the following correlation exists between the temperature class and the maximum surface temperature:

Motor impeller marking
Example for marking on an RE..P, RH..M motor impeller: II 2G Ex h IIB T3/T4 Gb A motor impeller marked in this manner would meet the following requirements.

- II: Group II requirements compliant with Directive 2014/34/EU (not suitable for underground applications)
- 2G: Category 2, gas explosion protection outdoors
- h: Standard symbol (previously “c” for constructional safety ignition protection class)
- IIB: Gas explosion group
- T4: Temperature class
- Gb: EPL (equipment protection level)
The local process parameters should be compared with the specifications for intended use and the data on the rating plate.
Other uses which do not coincide with, or which exceed those specified will be deemed unauthorised unless contractually agreed. Damages resulting from such unauthorized uses will not be the liability of the manufacturer. The user will assume sole liability.
Rating plate
There are two rating plates on the product:
- The fan rating-plate includes the rated voltage and connection and up to which specifications the fan can be loaded. Values higher than the stamped absorbed power / stamped absorbed wattage mean the fan is operating in a range that is not permitted. If the motor is operated with partial voltage (this is certified in the EU type-examination certificate data-sheet), the current may rise by the amount ∆I (in %) indicated on the fan rating plate.
- The motor rating plate includes the maximum permitted data, that has been certified by the notified body. Also stated on this rating plate are the flows during partial voltage that must not be exceeded from an electrical point of view while complying with the standard EN 60079-7 The voltage stamped on the motor rating plate can be significantly higher with the same circuit than that stated on the fan rating plate during this. The advantage of this design is explained here using an example: If the motor is loaded by the fan with considerably less input power than the stamped motor input power, we use voltage reduction. The motor is designed for a higher voltage than the 400 V mains voltage, e.g. for 500 V. That improves the electrical characteristics at 400 V and results in optimum fan regulation properties. Through this, it is inevitable that the fan and motor ratingplate data differentiate

Information
A fan rating plate is located on the product and an identical fan rating plate
is stuck onto the title page of the enclosed assembly instructions during
production.
Transport, storage
Attention!
- Observe the weight specifications (see rating plate) and the permissible carrying loads of the means of transport.
- Wear safety clothing / shoes and cut-resistant safety gloves when handling!
- Do not transport the fan by the connecting cable!
- Avoid shocks and impacts to the device during the transport.
- Avoid extreme humidity, heat or exposure to cold (see technical data).
- Watch out for possible damage to the packaging or fan.
- Secure pallets during transport.
- Do not stack pallets.
- Only handle with suitable hoisting gear.
- Never stand underneath the suspended fan because defective transport equipment could cause death.
- Store the fan / motor in the original packaging in a dry area protected from the weather and protect it from dirt and weather until final installation.
- Avoid prolonged storage; we recommend a maximum of one year (consult the manufacturer before starting if stored for longer).
- Inspect the bearing for proper operation prior to installation.
- Recommendation: Turn the impeller evenly by hand to avoid jamming and damaging the bearing.
Disposal / Recycling
Disposal must be carried out professionally and in an environmentally friendly way in accordance with the respective national legal stipulations.
- Separate the materials by type and in an environmentally-friendly way.
- If necessary, commission a specialist company with the waste disposal.
Mounting
General notes
Attention!
- Check the fan for damage, e.g. cracks, dents or damage to the electric cables, before assembly. Start-up is not allowed in the case of transport damage!
- Mounting is only to be undertaken by trained service personnel. The system manufacturer or the machine builder and/or the user is responsible that the inherent installation and security information are harmonized with the valid standard and guidelines (EN ISO12100 / 13857).
- Wear safety clothing / shoes and cut-resistant safety gloves when handling!
- If necessary, lift the fan out of the packing with a hoisting unit.
- At a weight greater than 25 kg for men / 10 kg for women, the fan should be lifted out by two persons (according to REFA). The values may differ from country to country.
- Prior to installing the fan, it is to be checked whether the safety zone as per EN ISO 13857 and in household appliances as per EN 60335 are met. If the installation height (danger zone) above the reference level is greater than or equal to 2700 mm and is not reduced by auxiliary means such as chairs, ladders, work platforms or bases on vehicles, a guard grille against accidental contact is not necessary at the fan.
- If the fan is located in danger zone, then the manufacturer or operator shall ensure that hazards shall be prevented by appropriare protective constuctions which meet the requirements to EN ISO 13857.
- The custom designs must suit the prevailing conditions.
- Tighten the fastenings with the specified torques.
- Do not allow drilling chips, screws and other foreign bodies to reach the device interior!
- Any use in ambient temperatures below -10 °C is dependent on not being subjected to unusual, sudden or mechanical loads or stresses on the material (for the min. permissible ambient temperature please see the technical data).
- Before the first switch-on, remove any items that may be present (borings, screws and other foreign objects) from the intake area – risk of injury from any objects that may fly out!
WARNING
Parts of the rotor or the entire rotor coming loose in case of a fault (e.g.
excessive vibrations) can result in personal injury and material damage.
Use guard grilles or suitable design measures for critical applications (e.g. refrigerating systems with refrigerant subject to the ordinance on hazardous substances).
Special installation features for explosion-protected motor impellers
In terms of material selection, due to special protective measures relating to possible contact surfaces between rotating and stationary components (impeller end plate, cover disk / inlet nozzle), ZIEHL-ABEGG centrifugal motor impellers satisfy the requirements of the EN 14986 standard.
Galvanized steel plate is used as the material for the rotating component of the motor impeller (impeller end plate, cover disk). If the motor impeller is purchased without a ZIEHL-ABEGG inlet nozzle, the system manufacturer is responsible for selecting the material for the stationary peripheral parts. Only material pairs complying with EN 14986 may be used.
Installation, protection from external influences
Install the motor impeller in a housing or in the system with no distortion or tension and protect it against the effects of external forces and vibrations (e.g. transfer of vibrations from other system components through the foundations or through the connected pipes and ductwork).
To attach the motor impeller to the stationary motor flange, use screws with strength class 8.8 and fit with suitable screw locks. Permitted torques: for M6 = 9.5 Nm; for M10 = 46 Nm.
Certain operating points/speeds may not be used if resonances occur due to add-on parts. The system manufacturer must carry out a check for resonances during commissioning.
In the case of a vertical motor axis, the respective lower condensation hole must be open. The motor impeller should be installed in such a way that easy inspection and cleaning are possible (good accessibility of inspection hatches).
Protect from the penetration of foreign bodies
Fans that take in air from or blow out air to the outside must be protected against ingress of foreign bodies by a guard grille.
Guard grilles must also be installed if intake or falling in of foreign bodies cannot be ruled out despite pipes and ductwork being connected.
At least protection class IP20 in compliance with EN 60529 must be guaranteed for the entire system at all times.
It must be ensured that no rust particles or rust flakes are deposited on surfaces.
Protection against contact with rotating and stationary parts
Ensure that the gap “U” or “S” (see following figures) is uniform.
To comply with the material pair stipulated in EN 14986, the following minimum gaps must be maintained:
- The minimum gap between rotating and stationary parts may not be less than 0.5 % of the relevant contact diameter (diameter of a rotating part at the point where it can come into contact with a stationary part), but not less than 2 mm in an axial or radial direction, and it must not be more than 13 mm.
- RE..P: To achieve optimum power, the axial gap “U” should be max. 1-2 % of the nominal diameter of the impeller. Larger axial gap dimensions have a negative impact on the power of the motor impeller. The system manufacturer must ensure that the minimum and maximum gap “U” are adhered to.
A copper inlet nozzle can be ordered from ZIEHL-ABEGG SE as an accessory. This complies with the specified material pair.
Attention!
The following principle applies in general:Fans that do not comply with the
required minimum gap dimensions must not be put into operation under any
circumstances!

The possible contact diameter corresponds to the internal diameter at the
aspirating hole in the impeller, which is specified on ZIEHL-ABEGG SE dimension
sheets as “DSI” (RE..P) or “DE” (RH..M).
Attention!
Always check the gap dimension with a feeler gauge before start-up. Safe
operation is only guaranteed if it is compliant.
Sealing
RE..P and RH..M motor impellers are merely components, which are installed in a system / in a housing. The system manufacturer is responsible for the sealing of the system.
Connection cable & junction box
Information
In demanding environments (wet rooms, outdoor installation), connection
cables must have water draining pipe elbows. If using a junction box, install
this lower than the motor to ensure that water cannot penetrate through to the
controller housing from the connection cables.
Assembly in a humid atmosphere
Information
If the device is not in use for longer periods in a humid atmosphere, it is
recommended to operate the motor/fan for at least 2 hours every month at
80-100 % of maximum speed to remove any moisture that has penetrated inside.
Electrical installation
Safety precautions
Danger due to electric current
- Work on electric components may only be carried out by trained electricians or by persons instructed in electricity under the supervision of an electrician in accordance with electrical engineering regulations.
- The 5 electrical safety rules must be observed!
- Connect the motor/fan only to electrical circuits that can be disconnected with an allpole isolating switch.
- The device owner is responsible for the EMC of the entire plant according to the locally applicable standards.
- It is forbidden to carry out work on electrically live parts!
- Cover neighbouring electrical equipment during installation work.
- Cable glands made out of metal are not allowed in plastic terminal boxes due to lack of potential equalisation.
- Electrical equipment must be checked regularly: Loose connections are to be retightened and damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
Connection
All motors/fans for which this documentation is valid are supplied with a lead-out cable. When connecting, observe EN / IEC 60079-14.
If the line ends are connected to the external circuits in the potentially explosive area, a junction box suitable for this area must be used. Refer to the connection diagram enclosed or attached to the product, which
must be available at the operating location.
EMC-compatible installation
Compliance with EMC guideline 2014/30/EU is only guaranteed if the product is connected to the standard ectricity supply grid. If this product is integrated into a system or complemented and operated with other components (e.g. controller units and control devices), the manufacturer or operator of the entire system is responsible for the compliance with the EMC directive 2014/30/EU.
Electrical connection, grounding and protection
The electrical connections and earthing for the motor/fan must be made by a qualified professional.
In order to avoid interference or unbalanced currents, equipotential bonding to other conductive system components must be connected if needed.
In compliance with EN 1127-1, the device must be protected against the following hazard sources with suitable protection or screening measures:
- Lightning strike
- High-frequency transmitters
- Ionisation sources (e.g. X-ray tubes, radioactive materials)
- Ultrasound sources (e.g. ultrasonic testing devices)
- Adiabatic compression and shockwaves (e.g. relaxation of high-pressure gases in pipelines, compression ignition of lubricating oil mists).
- Exothermic reactions (e.g. substances in the environment that tend to self-ignite).
Mains connection
Line Voltage/Rotat. Direction
The mains connection is to: PE, L1, L2 and L3.
You must make sure that the mains voltage matches the specification on the rating plate and lies within the permitted tolerance specifications Ex-Motors have additional a marked outer earthing conductor connection. Change in direction of rotation by exchanging two supply phases.
Required quality attributes for the mains voltage
Danger due to electric current
The mains voltage must comply with the EN 50160 quality characteristics and
the defined standard voltages in IEC 60038!
Motor protection
To prevent malfunctions and to protect the motor, the motor must be disconnected from the mains by the built-in thermistors “TP” (PTC thermistor) in the event of a malfunction (e.g. B. impermissibly high medium temperature) in conjunction with an approved tripping unit and an external contactor.
Attention!
- Check the thermistors “TP” (PTC thermistor) only with a measuring voltage of <2.5V.
- The motors contain triple thermistors. No more than two PTC thermistor chains may be connected in series, as this can lead to undefined shutdown.
- Tripping device for motors with thermistors “TP” (PTC thermistor) e.g. ZIEHL-ABEGG type U-EK230E with switch-off via a contactor.
- A current dependent protection is not admissible.
Speed control
Motors/fans for which this documentation is valid may be operated in the partial voltage range. The use of electronic or transformer-based control units, except frequency converters, is allowed. The use of ZIEHL-ABEGG control units is recommended. Control units from other manufacturers must be of the same or better quality. The specified minimum voltages and maximum currents must be observed (see typeexamination certificate).
ZIEHL-ABEGG offers a comprehensive range of voltage controllers for speed control of 3 ~ motors.

Use of a frequency inverter is not allowed!
Commissioning
Prerequisites for commissioning
Attention!
- During commissioning, unexpected and hazardous conditions can arise in the entire installation due to defective adjustments, defective components or incorrect electrical connections. Remove all persons and objects from the hazardous area.
- Do not start the fan until all safety instructions (EN 50110, IEC 60364-1)have been checked, the fan is out of range (EN ISO 13857)and danger can be ruled out.
During start-up check the following
Observe the following points before the initial start-up:
- Installation and electrical connection have been properly completed?
- Has any leftover installation material and other foreign material been removed from the fan area?
- Have all objects (tools, etc.) been removed from the air flow?
- That safety devices -if necessary- are mounted (EN ISO 13857)?
- The impeller is out of reach?
- Are the drain holes (as far as available) open or respectively closed according to the suitable installation position?
- Continuous potential equalisation must exist.
- Connection data complies with the specifications on the rating plate?
- Protective conductor and external earthing conductor have been connected.
- Thermistors “TP” (PTC) and triggering device have been properly installed and are operational?
- Are all conductive attachments and accessories earthed?
- If motor impeller units are stored or operated after long periods without use, or if they have been exposed to condensation over a longer period, the insulation resistance of the motor winding must be measured before start-up (or restarting). If the value is less than or equal to 1.5 MΩ the motor winding must be dried.
Start-up may only begin when all safety instructions have been verified and any hazards have been ruled out.
• Check the turning direction / airflow direction. The turning direction is defined in the figure and the turning direction arrow on the outer diameter of the stator (RE..P) and/or the inside of the impeller base disk (RH..M):

Check for quiet, low vibration operation. Strong vibrations due to erratic operation (unbalanced), e.g. caused by transportation damage or improper use, can lead to failure.

ZIEHL-ABEGG SE motor impellers are delivered balanced in compliance with DIN ISO 21940-11 for the appropriate fan category as defined in ISO 14694. Check the motor impeller for mechanical vibrations after installation. If the limit values for the corresponding fan category are exceeded during start-up, you must have the motor / impeller unit checked by specialist personnel and rebalanced if necessary before
continuous service is permitted. -
Check the system for resonances. If they lead to unacceptable high vibrations on the motor impeller, the system may not be started up (contact ZIEHL-ABEGG SE service if necessary).

A-rated sound power levels of over 80 dB(A) are possible, see product catalogue. In addition, perform the following tests before switching on an explosion-protected fan:

Check the operating conditions / process parameters (see “Use as Intended”). Above all, ensure that the maximum permissible value for the speed, intake and ambient temperature (see rating plate) are never exceeded under any conditions and are never exceeded at any time!

Check the correct electrical connection of the drive motor (supply voltage, earthing, thermistor connection “TP”).
-
Check for foreign bodies in the air conduction area: make sure that no loose parts are in the fan or in the intake area of the fan.
-
Verify that the gap dimension check has been performed successfully (see “Protecting against contact between rotating and stationary parts”). The impeller must not scrape on stationary housing parts (=> ignition sparks).

During erection / start-up operation, the ambient temperature, air humidity, environmental contamination, and corrosion through the surrounding atmosphere must be taken into consideration.
Troubleshooting
Code of behaviour in the event of faults
- In the event of faults, which represent a danger to people, installation or environment, the fan must be switched off.
- Search for the cause of the error.
- Inform the person responsible for the operating site.
- Contact the manufacturer if a fault of any kind is detected!
Attention!
Repair work which is not carried out correctly can result in serious injuries
and/or material damage.

- Before working on the fan, this must be disconnected from the power supply and secured against switching back on!

Service work
Maintenance/servicing
Attention
- Only specifically qualified persons are permitted to perform any work on explosion protected devices (e.g. TRBS 1203, Section 3.1).
- Wear safety clothing / shoes and cut-resistant safety gloves when handling!
- Please observe the safety regulations and the worker´s protection rules by all maintenance and service work (EN 50 110, IEC 60364-1).
- As the opening on the motor is partially covered by the rating plate, and as custom bearings with special ZIEHL-ABEGG lubrication are employed, only ZIEHL-ABEGG SE is allowed to carry out the bearing exchange.
- ZIEHL-ABEGG ATEX fans/motors are partially or completely equipped with antistatic, conductive painting or coating. Repainting can lead to dangerous, static charges and is therefore not permissible!
- Bolted-on wheels and/or wings may only be replaced by authorised ZIEHL-ABEGG SE staff. The manufacturer shall not be liable for damage caused through improper repair work.
- In the case of complete dismantling and reinstallation of the fan, checking must be carried out before start-up (see start-up).
- Please read the Safety instructions chapter before working on the fan!
- Before working on the fan, this must be disconnected from the power supply and secured against switching back on!
- No maintenance work at running fan!
- Allow maintenance work to be carried out by trained specialists only.
- For all defects (e.g. cable and wire lead-ins, windings and cables), please contact our repair department.
- Keep the fan airways free. There is the danger of foreign bodies being sucked in and objects flying out!
- Check for low-vibration running and abnormal running noises.
- The impeller is subject to natural wear depending on the area of application and the conveying medium. Regularly check that no deposits have formed on the impeller which can lead to an imbalance and thus damage (see Chapter: Cleaning).
- Deposits on the motor, particularly on the cooling vanes and in recesses on the rotor, can lead to reduced cooling and the motor switching off prematurely. For this reason, remove deposits in good time (see Chapter: Cleaning).
- Maintenance interval in accordance with the degree of contamination of the impeller!
- Check the fan at regular intervals (recommendation: every 6 months) for mechanical oscillations. Observe the limits specified in ISO 14694 and, if they are exceeded, implement remedial measures (e.g. rebalancing by specialist staff).
- Check the impeller, in particular the weld-seams, for possible cracks.
- Repair, e.g. by welding is prohibited!
- Compliance with the minimum gap must be checked at least once a year. This interval may be shorter, depending on the application.
- When opening cable glands on the fan / motor, check the condition of the threaded connections and seals. Always replace defective or brittle threaded connections and seals.
- Regularly check the earth connection of all components.
- The system constructor must enable easy access for cleaning and inspection work.
- Any faults detected in the electric system/modules/operating equipment must be corrected immediately. If these faults are not corrected, the device/system is potentially very dangerous. The device/system must therefore not be operated when it is faulty.

Cleaning
To avoid risks of imbalance, the impeller must be checked and cleaned regularly. The impeller must be cleaned and dusted at least once a year. Depending on the place of use, this interval can also be shorter to exclude all risks of imbalance.
Danger due to electric current
- Voltage supply for motor must be interrupted and secured against restoration!
- Wet cleaning under voltage may lead to an electric shock – danger to life!
Be aware of the following Points:
- Clean the fans`s flow area.
- Keep the fan airways free. There is the danger of foreign bodies being sucked in and objects flying out!
- Do not use any aggressive, paint solvent cleaning agents when cleaning.
- Make sure that no water gets into the inside of the motor, note protection class (IP).
- The drain holes (if available) corresponding to the installation position must be checked for free passage.
- In case of improper cleaning work, no warranty is assumed regarding corrosion formation / paint adhesion for unpainted / painted fans.
- To avoid accumulation of moisture in the motor, the fan must be operated for at least 1 hour at 80% to 100 % of the maximum speed before the cleaning process!
- After the cleaning process, the fan must be operated for at least 2 hours at 80 to 100 % of the maximum speed for drying purposes!

Ball bearing life| The bearing service life of the motor-integrated ball
bearings determined in accordance with the standard calculation method is
largely determined by the grease service life F10h and is approx. 30,000 to
40,000 operating hours in standard use, taking into account a temperature and
load spec- trum. The fan or motor is maintenance-free due to the use of ball
bearings with life-time lubrication. Once the grease service life F10h has
been reached, it may be necessary to change the bearing. The bearing service
life may change compared to the specified value if operating conditions such as
increased vibrations, increased shocks, increased or excessively low
temperatures, humidity, dirt in the ball bearing or unfavourable control modes
