A: Use turpentine to remove tar stains and rinse thoroughly with water.

Safety

Take the necessary and required safety precautions, such as safety nets and lifelines when installing from the outside, safety goggles, gloves, hard hats, etc. Do not step on the glass.

Falling from height

  • When using ladders to go on the roof:
    • Ladder in good condition?
    • Set up correctly at an angle of 75°?
    • Secured below and on top against moving?
    • Don’t take heavy material with you on the ladder (3-point contact rule)! If possible, use a crane to lift the material.
  • Do not lift material over the roof edge; use a crane to put the material on the roof.
  • Roof zone: make sure the part of the roof where the skylight/barrel vault will be installed is safe enough, e.g. secure the edge (support system in the roof gutter that supports against the outer wall of the building, with suitable A B C category depending on the roof pitch) or use a scaffold so no one can fall off the roof. If the roof is not safe enough, always use a harness with a lifeline (adapted to the fall height), attached to a suitable attachment point.
  • Make sure the roof is stable and does not have dangerous openings or insufficient secure parts (e.g. corrugated sheets, …). Take the necessary measures if this is not the case: strengthen, and use suitable safety nets below the danger zones.
  • Before making the roof opening for the skylight/barrel vault: make sure there are safety nets that conform to the current legislation. The nets must be attached firmly and sufficiently to the building.
  • When using an aerial work platform: always wear and secure your harness (mandatory)! Leaving the cage is forbidden.
  • Never walk backward on a roof, always walk forward.
  • Make sure there’s enough light in the working zone.

Low-hanging obstacles and falling loads

  • Forbidden to walk under or within a radius of 1 m of a hanging or lifted load.
  • Demarcate the danger zone below the skylight/barrel vault, in the building as well as on the outside near the outer walls (in case material slides off the roof). If the zone is demarcated, people cannot be hit by any falling loads. It’s prohibited to enter these danger zones during construction.

Crushing hazard

  • All working tools are in good condition and provided with a valid CE label and all necessary safety regulations. These cannot be removed.
  • People who use these working tools are educated for this purpose. Protections are always present on all working tools. They are in good condition and need to be set correctly.

Tripping/falling

  • Safety is key and it begins with order and tidiness. Clean everything immediately, and leave nothing lying around.
  • Trash needs to be sorted.
  • Be cautious with electric cables (danger of tripping/falling). Never walk backward!
  • Make sure there’s enough light in the working zone.

Sharp objects

  • Make sure your fingers/hands are not pinched and watch out for cuts while handling skylights or barrel vaults.
  • Be careful where you put your hands during the installation.
  • Wearing cut-resistant gloves is mandatory.

Ergonomics

  • Always lift loads correctly: bend your knees, move your feet instead of forcing your spine, and lift as close to your body as possible.
  • Parts of more than 25 kg must be lifted with at least 2 persons.

Lifting equipment
Depending on the size and weight of the glass skylight, we recommend using appropriate lifting equipment for transport and installation. This is important for general safety and to prevent any damage to the product.

Personal protective equipment

  • Work clothes, safety shoes, and helmets are mandatory for everyone.
  • A lifeline and harness are mandatory if the edge is not secured enough or if there are no safety nets below the roof opening. They are also necessary when using an aerial working platform.
  • Use gloves when handling skylight or barrel vault parts.
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection are mandatory when using saws/grinders.

Always perform a Last Minute Risk Analysis!
If in doubt: STOP! Do not take unnecessary risks. Ask your supervisor if needed.

Tips for maintenance

  • Regular cleaning of the glass flat roof windows is always necessary.
  • Check the mounting and silicone seams annually.
  • Remove stains caused by tar only with turpentine and rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Clean with water and non-aggressive soap (no abrasives), always rinse with copious amounts of water.
  • Clean the PVC curb or PVC adapter frame with PVC cleaner.

General information

  • Before starting the installation or maintenance of the Vitria glass flat roof window, it’s crucial to adhere to all required safety precautions. The Vitria must be installed by a professional.
  • Declaration of performance (DoP) is available on the website.

Please note!

  • Depending on the dimensions and corresponding weight of the glass flat roof window, we recommend using suitable hoisting and/or lifting equipment, both during transport and installation. Always place the glass window on the roof using pallet packaging.
  • This is important for general safety as well as helping prevent damage to the product.

Skylight curb inclination/Basic requirements of the curb

Recommended roof pitch:
The Vitria glass flat roof window is installed at a pitch of at least 4° to 25°. To prevent contamination of the outside of the glass and standing water, we advise a pitch of 5°. A basic curb is not included with the product. The roof slope and/or the basic curb must meet the requirements: “Basic requirements of the curb” (see further).

Requirements for basic skylight curb

Curb construction
The curb (not included) must comply with the following conditions:

  • Upper surface of curb: min. 15 cm above the roofing material.
  • The curb has a flange at the top of which the inside is equal to the daylight opening. The width of the top flange is at least 55 mm and max. 60 mm (57.5 +/-2.5).
  • The thickness of the top flange is at least 2 mm and strong enough over the entire width of 55 mm.
  • The thickness of the top flange is max. 11 mm.
  • No obstacles allowed in the marked area to allow the mounting of the lower hinge.
  • The roofing material is pulled up to the top flange of the upper curb.

Installation

Installing the flat roof window

  • Please note: avoid heat buildup.
  • Never install the glass flat roof window directly flat on the roofing without any air cavity. This can cause deformation due to heat buildup under the window. If necessary, put the window temporarily on wooden beams, so that air can pass under the window.

Installing the top hinges on the flat roof window
Unpack the glass flat roof window and position it with its bottom side facing upwards. Secure the top hinges to the bottom of the PVC frame with the stainless steel screws supplied (HiLo 5.3 x 25 mm); each time on the two opposite long sides; according to the table below.

  • Values in the table below are for reference only!

  • Slight variations are possible!

  • Please note: only use the original screws supplied for this.

  • Do not use any other screws to mount the top hinges on the PVC frame.

Installing the bottom hinges on the curb

Recommended technique: skylight as a template

  • The easiest and best way to mount the bottom hinges on the curb is to use the flat roof window itself as a template. The procedure is described below.
  • Place the Vitria on the curb.

Align the flat roof window with the curb in both directions.

Once everything is positioned correctly, you can now mark the position of the hinges on the curb.

Draw the marked lines through on the top flange of the curb. Use a square for this.

Align the supplied positioning tool with the marked lines.

Use the tool to position the bottom hinges.

  • Keep the marks aligned with the tool and push the tool towards the inside of the curb. Use appropriate materials
  • (*) to attach the bottom hinge to the curb.
  • (*) see page 12: fixing material for the hinges.

Positioning the hinges.

  • Always measure from the inside of the curb to the center of the hinges.
  • For best results, use the technique described previously to mount the bottom hinges to the curb (see page 9: skylight as template)
  • Values in the table below are for reference only!
  • Slight variations are possible!

Fixing material for hinges

  • Always use the appropriate material to mount the hinges on the curb!
  • The supplied set contains mounting materials for the following curb types: polyester, metal, and PVC.
  • For other curb types: use appropriate mounting hardware to attach the hinges.

Important note:
An existing skylight curb must meet the minimum requirements described in a previous chapter.

Polyester curb

  • Drill holes with a drill bit of 5.5 mm.
  • Use the supplied blind rivets (art. no. 5420).
  • You can use a manual or automatic pop rivet gun to install the blind rivets.

Metal curb

  • Use the supplied self-drilling hexagon screws 4.8 x 25 (art. no. 17178)
  • Tighten the screws with a suitable wrench SW8

PVC curb

Important notice:
The compatibility of the bottom hinge with the PVC curb depends on the geometry of the PVC curb.

  • In some cases, the bottom hinge will not be compatible with the PVC curb.
  • For incompatible PVC curbs, other options are available.
  • Please contact us for more information.
  • The hinge comes into contact with the PVC curb.
  • Not compatible with PVC curb 20/00 EP or PVC adapter frame.

For PVC curbs that are compatible with the hinges:
Use a Philips screwdriver to tighten the supplied HILO screws (art. no. 5115).

Installing the flat roof window on the curb
Turn the whole unit over and position it above the curb.

Positioning
Place the flat roof window:

Attach

  • Once everything is in place, the hinges now need to be secured with the supplied threaded rod (48342) and hexagon socket cap nuts (51821).
  • Apply a drop of thread locker to the nuts to keep them from coming loose.
  • Use an Allen key SW5 to tighten the cap nuts.

Attach permanently

  • Check that everything is mounted correctly before you finally secure the skylight with the one-way screws! One-way screws are difficult to remove once installed!
  • Secure the window with the M4 one-way screws & M4 washers.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the one-way screws.

General warning

Please note:

  • Never screw from the top or at an angle through the PVC frame.
  • This would mean the wrong installation!
