Football-Bag
The pattern and instructions are designed for a size 9 football. For other
ball sizes or a narrower zipper, adjust the pattern and measurements
accordingly. Materials
– American football, size 9 – Zipper 26 cm long, teeth width 10 mm – Sewing
thread, e.g. Seralon and Extra Strong from Mettler – Cotton fabric for lining
– 2 snap hooks – 2 metal bag handle holders to attach the snap hooks – 1.2 m
webbing or a thick leather strap – 2 rivets
– Lining pattern – Scissors, small thread scissors or seam ripper – Waterproof
pen – Clips, textile glue – Punch pliers and hammer
– bernette 08 – Zipper Foot – Straight Stitch Foot with Non-Stick Sole
Preparations Determine in which seam of the ball the zipper should be sewn
into. Keep this seam and the seam with the lacing intact. Carefully undo all
other seams. Remove the inner ball. It is connected to the outer shell at the
valve, but it is usually enough to pull on it to release the valve.
Mark the length of the zipper on the remaining seam without lacing. It is best
to determine the center of the seam and mark half of the zipper length from
there. Mark half the width of the zipper teeth. Carefully cut out the marked
opening for the zipper.
Reinforce the seam which was not cut away by sewing it again, so that it does
not come undone later.
Cut the lining You need the following parts for the lining: 2x Top Lining (A)
2x Bottom Lining (B) 2x Rectangle (C)
Fold the two rectangles (C) along the marked line, resulting in 2 rectangles
with size 6 x 3.5 cm. Pin the rectangles flush to the top part of the lining
(A), with the fold pointing towards the center. Sew in place with a 1 cm seam
allowance.
Sew the second piece of lining A to the opposite side of the rectangles.
Place the zipper under the sewn-together lining pieces. Caution: The slider
must be on the left side of the fabric. Pin the seam allowances to the zipper
tape. As the zipper tape is slightly wider than the 1 cm seam allowance of the
lining, allow the zipper tape to stick out slightly. Sew the zipper in place
with the Zipper Foot.
Now place the top lining with the zipper into the football. Secure the zipper
opening with fabric glue and hold in place with clips. Allow the fabric glue
to dry thoroughly.
Topstitch around the zipper. As a larger distance is required here, the
Straight Stitch Foot or alternatively the Straight Stitch Foot with Non-Stick
Sole can be used. To obtain a more decorative seam, use Mettler Extra Strong
in a contrasting color. In this case, select stitch length 4 and adjust the
thread tension. Insert a stronger needle which accommodates the thicker thread
if needed.
Sew the two bottom lining pieces (B) together along one long edge. Leave an
opening of approx. 12 cm to later turn your project inside out.
Now sew the bottom lining to the top lining pieces (with 1 cm seam allowance).
Attach the handles to the football. To do this, mark the required holes with a
waterproof pen and punch the holes with the punch pliers. Caution: the lining
should be left as is. Secure the handle holders with the screws from the
inside.
Sew the removed football part back onto the ball. To do this, sew along the
previous seam line, the seam allowance here is only 4 mm.
Now close the seam with the lacing all around the ball. Important: the zipper
must be open and the lining must not be sewn in.
Turn the bag through the lining opening. Then topstitch the opening close to
the edge. Shoulder strap For a decoration, topstitch the leather strap on both
sides with sewing thread in a contrasting color. The Adjustable Guide is
helpful for keeping an even spacing.
Thread the snap hooks and determine the required length. Fold the ends and
fasten with a rivet.
Alternatively, webbing can be used for the straps. Webbing does not require
rivets, since the ends can simply be sewn.
The football bag is now complete!
