Use of petrol

Danger to life! Petrol is toxic and highly flammable.

  • Only store petrol in containers (canisters) designed and tested for this purpose. The tank caps must always be properly screwed on and tightened.
Defective caps must be replaced for safety reasons.

  • Keep petrol away from sparks, open flames, permanent flames, heat sources and other sources of ignition. Do not smoke!

  • Refuel outdoors only and do not smoke while refuelling.

  • Before refuelling, switch off the combustion engine and let it cool down.

  • Petrol must be filled before starting the combustion engine. While the combustion engine runs or if the machine is hot, the fuel cap must not be opened and petrol must not be filled.

  • Open the fuel cap carefully and slowly. Wait for the pressure to equalise and only then remove the fuel filler cap completely.

  • Use a suitable funnel or filler pipe for refuelling so that no fuel can spill onto the combustion engine and housing or lawn.
Do not overfill the fuel tank!

  • To leave room for the fuel to expand, never fill the fuel tank beyond the lower edge of the filling nozzle.
Observe additional information in the combustion engine user manual.

  • If petrol has overflowed, do not start the combustion engine until the petrol-contaminated area has been cleaned. Avoid starting the engine until the fuel vapours have evaporated (wipe dry).

  • Always wipe up spilled fuel immediately.

  • If petrol has got on clothing, it must be changed.

  • The tank cover must be properly screwed on and tightened after each refuelling operation. The product must not be put into operation without the original tank cover screwed on.

  • For safety reasons, check fuel line, fuel tank, fuel cap and connections regularly for damage, ageing (brittleness), tight fit and leaks and replace if necessary.

  • Only empty the tank outdoors.

  • Never use beverage bottles or similar to dispose of or store operating materials, such as fuel. People, especially children, could be tempted to drink from it.

  • Never store the product with petrol in the tank inside a building. Any fuel vapours produced can come into contact with naked flames or sparks and ignite.

  • Do not place the product and fuel tank near heaters, radiant heaters, welding products or other sources of heat.

Risk of explosion!
If a defect is detected on the fuel tank, the fuel filler cap or on fuel- carrying parts (fuel lines) during operation, the combustion engine must be switched off immediately. Then consult a specialist dealer.

  • Do not breathe petrol/lubricating oil vapours and exhaust gases.
  • Operate the product outdoors only.

NOTE!
Product damage
Using the product without or with too little engine and gearbox oil can result in engine damage.

  • Fill with petrol and oil before commissioning. The product is delivered ex works with engine oil.

NOTE!
Risk of damage!
If incorrectly stored or undrained fuel is used, the carburettor may become clogged or engine operation may be affected.

  • Put unused fuel in an airtight vessel and store it in a dark, cool room.

Check before operation

  • Check all sides of the engine for oil or fuel leaks.
  • Check the fuel level – the fuel tank should be at least half-full.
  • Check the air filter condition (see section 13.1).
  • Check the condition of the fuel lines.
  • Make sure that the spark plug connector is attached to the spark plug.
  • Look for signs of damage.
  • Check that all protective covers are in place and all screws, nuts and bolts are tightened.

Mixing fuel

Attention!
The earth auger is delivered without a fuel mixture.
Therefore, ensure that you add a fuel mixture before starting it up.
Use a fuel mixture of 40:1 consisting of two-stroke motor oil and unleaded petrol.

  • 40:1 = 40 parts petrol + 1 part oil

Do not mix the fuel mixture in the fuel tank. Use the mixing cup supplied for this or another suitable container. Only pour the fuel mixture into the fuel tank after premixing and stirring well.
Unsuitable operating materials or mixing ratios that deviate from those prescribed can lead to serious damage to the engine. Low quality petrol or engine oil can damage the engine, sealing rings, lines and fuel tank.

Note:
Always pre-mix the intended oil volume in half of the fuel volume to produce the fuel/oil mixture and then add the remaining fuel volume. Shake the finished mixture well before filling the mixture into the earth auger.

Fuel mixing table
Mixing procedure: 40 parts petrol to 1 part oil

Example:

  • 1 l petrol: 0.025 l 2-stroke oil
  • 5 l petrol: 0.125 l 2-stroke oil

Attention:
Do not use 2-stroke oil that recommends a mixing ratio of 100:1. The engine guarantee of the manufacturer becomes invalid in the event of damage to the engine due to insufficient lubrication.

Attention:
Use only designated and approved vessels for the transport and storage of fuel. Put the correct amount of petrol and 2-stroke oil into the enclosed oil- petrol mixing bottle (B). Then shake the vessel well.
Never use oil for 4-stroke engines or water-cooled 2-stroke engines. This can cause the spark plug to become fouled, the exhaust part to become blocked or the piston ring to become stuck. Fuel mixtures that have not been used for one month or longer can clog the carburettor or impair engine operation. Put unused fuel in an airtight vessel and store it in a dark, cool room.

Filling with fuel mixture (Fig. 1)

DANGER!
Risk of fire and explosion!

When filling, fuel may ignite and even explode. This can lead to severe burns or death.

  • Switch off the engine and let it cool down.
  • Keep heat, flames and sparks away.
  • Only fill up with fuel outdoors.
  • Wear protective gloves.
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
  • Start the product at a distance of at least 3 m from the fuel filling point.
  • Watch out for leaks. If petrol is leaking, do not start the engine.
    1. Clean the area surrounding the filling area. Impurities in the fuel tank (2) lead to operational faults.
    2. Carefully open the tank cover (3) so that any possible overpressure can be relieved.
    3. Fill the fuel tank (2) with fuel mixture using a funnel (not included in scope of delivery). Note the max. filling capacity of 1.2 litres. Carefully fill the petrol mixture up to the lower edge of the filler neck.
    4. Close the tank cover (3) again. Ensure that the fuel cap is tightly sealed.
    5. Clean the fuel cap and the surroundings.
    6. Check the fuel tank (2) and fuel lines for leaks.
    7. Move at least three meters away from the refuelling area before starting the engine.

Idle adjustment screw (Fig. 1 + 3)
The idling speed of the earth auger can be adjusting using the idle adjustment screw (6).

If the idling speed is set a little too high (e.g. when the drill attachment itself rotates when idling), the idling speed can be reduced by slowly turning it anti-clockwise.
If the drill does not remain idle after a successful adjustment, please contact a specialist dealer.

Attention! Any other work on the carburettor may only be carried out by a specialist workshop.

  • Clean the air filter only by knocking out or blowing out with compressed air.
  • Never clean the air filter with petrol or flammable solvents.

NOTE!
Risk of damage!
Operating the engine without the filter element in place can cause engine damage.

  • Never run the engine without the air filter element in place.
A fouled air filter insert (7b) diminishes the engine output due to reduced air supply to the carburettor.
    Regular inspection is therefore essential.

The air filter should be checked every 10 operating hours and cleaned as required.

  1. Unscrew the wing nut (7a) and remove the air filter cover (7).

  2. Check the air filter cover (7) for holes or cracks.
    Replace any damaged insert.

  3. Remove the air filter insert (7b).

  4. Wipe off dirt on the inside of the filter housing with a clean moist cloth. Make sure that no direct enters the opening.

  5. Set the air filter cover (7) on the filter housing for the duration of the filter cleaning process.

  6. Blow out the air filter insert (7b) from the inside to the outside with compressed air. Do not rub dirt off the air filter insert (7b). This can result in damage.

  7. Reinsert the clean air filter insert (7b).

  8. Put on the air filter cover (7) and secure it with the wing nut (7a).

ATTENTION: Never run the engine without an air filter insert or with a damaged air filter insert. This would allow dirt to enter the engine, which would damage the engine. The manufacturer warranty is then invalidated.

Cleaning / replacing the spark plug
(Fig. 6 + 7)

ATTENTION: Only replace the spark plug when the engine is cold!

Check the spark plug for dirt for the first time after 20 operating hours and clean it with a copper wire brush if necessary.
Thereafter, replace the spark plug every 100 operating hours or if necessary.

  1. Disconnect the spark plug cable and remove any dirt in the spark plug area.
  2. Unscrew the spark plug (8a) with the supplied spark plug wrench (A) and check this.
  3. Check the insulation. Replace the spark plug (8a) if it is damaged, e.g. cracked or fragmented.
  4. Clean the spark plug electrodes with a wire brush.
  5. Check the electrode gap and adjust it using a feeler gauge. To make sure that the engine remains efficient, the spark plug (8a) must have the right electrode gap (0.7 – 0.8 mm).
  6. Screw the spark plug (8a) back in by hand and tighten it about 1/4 turn with the spark plug wrench (A).
  7. Fit the spark plug cable onto the spark plug (8a).

ATTENTION!
A loose spark plug can overheat and cause damage to the engine. If you tighten the spark plug too much, the thread in the cylinder head may be damaged.

Pump out petrol with a petrol extraction pump
The petrol must be drained in the event of storage over a longer period of time or for transport.

  1. Hold a collection bucket under the hose of the petrol extraction pump (not included in the scope of delivery).
  2. Unscrew and remove the fuel filler cap (3).
  3. Push the hose of the petrol extraction pump into the fuel tank (2) and pump out the petrol completely using the petrol extraction pump.
  4. Retighten the fuel filler cap (3).

Clean or replace the fuel filter
Check the fuel filter if necessary. A contaminated fuel filter hinders the fuel supply.

Open the tank cover (3) and pull the fuel filter through the opening using a wire hook (not included in the scope of delivery).

  • In the event of light contamination:
    • Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line and clean the filter in cleaning solvent.
  • In the event of heavy contamination:
    • Replace the fuel filter.
    1. To remove the fuel filter from the fuel line, squeeze the hose clamp and slide it down.
    2. Now the fuel filter can be removed from the fuel line.

Lubricating the transmission (15) (Fig. 2)

Lubricating the transmission is an important maintenance step to increase the service life of the machine and ensure proper functioning.

  1. Remove the screw (18) and put in the lithiumbased grease. Use a 5 mm Allen screw for this (not included in the scope of delivery).
  2. Turn the shaft manually until the grease comes out and replace the screw (18) again.
  3. Attention! Top up with only a little grease. Do not overfill under any circumstances (max.5-10g).

Transport
Before transport or parking indoors, allow the machine’s engine to cool down to avoid burns and risk of fire.

When changing location, even for a short distance during work, switch off the engine.
Only hold the earth auger by the handle. Do not touch the engine housing (risk of burns).

When transporting in a vehicle, secure the product against tipping, damage and fuel leaking out.

The fuel tank (2) must be completely emptied before transporting.

Storage

DANGER!
Risk of fire and explosion!
Storing the product near potential sources of ignition can result in a fire or an explosion. This can lead to severe burns or death.

  • Eliminate possible sources of ignition, such as furnaces, hot water boilers with gas, gas dryers, etc.

NOTE!
Risk of damage!
If the product is not stored properly, the engine can be damaged.

Store the product protected against dirt, dust and moisture.
Storage during extended breaks in operation:
If the earth auger will not be used for a period of more than 30 days, follow the steps below to prepare it for storage.

  1. Empty the fuel tank (2) completely (see section 13.3).

  2. Start the engine and let it run until it stops. This ensures that no fuel mixture remains in the carburettor.

  3. This prevents deposits from forming in the carburettor and potentially damaging the engine.

  4. Add 1 teaspoon of clean 2-stroke oil to the combustion chamber. Pull the starter cord slowly several times to coat the internal components.
    Re-insert the spark plug.

  5. Disconnect the spark plug cable.

  6. Use clean cloths to clean the earth auger.

  7. Store the earth auger in an upright position in a clean, dry building with good ventilation.

Store the product and its accessories in a dark, dry and frost-free place that is inaccessible to children.
The optimum storage temperature is between 5 and 30˚C.
Store the product in its original packaging.
Cover the product to protect it from dust or moisture.
Store the operating manual with the product.

Storing the fuel mixture
Only store the fuel mixture in containers approved for fuel, in a safe, dry and cool location protected from light and the sun.

  • Fuel mixture ages – only mix as required for a few weeks.
  • Do not store the fuel mixture for more than 30 days.
  • Exposure to light, sun, low or high temperatures can make the fuel mixture become unusable faster.

Recommissioning the earth auger

  1. Insert the spark plug cable.
  2. Pull the pull starter quickly to remove excess oil from the combustion chamber.
  3. Prepare the earth auger for operation.
  4. Fill the fuel tank (2) with the fuel mixture.
