  • Do not use an extension cord with this unit. Do not plug this unit into a power strip or multi-outlet power cord.
  • Before cleaning or moving, turn the unit off, allow it to cool, and unplug it.
  • Do not spray controls or outside of the unit with liquids or cleaning agents.
  • Do not clean the unit with steel wool.

FUNCTION AND PURPOSE

  • This unit is intended for contact-grill foods in commercial food service operations only. It is not intended for household, industrial, or laboratory use.
  • This sandwich grill is a medium-duty appliance capable of a wide variety of applications.
  • The temperature is thermostatically controlled to a range between 125 °F (52 °C) — 575 °F (300 °C) for single and dual models and 125 °F (52 °C) — 500 °F (260 °C) for the super-size model.
  • A Ready Light adjacent to the Thermostat Control Dial indicates when the plates have reached the set temperature.

UNPACKING AND INITIAL SETUP

When no longer needed, dispose of all packaging and materials in an environmentally responsible manner.

  1. Remove packing material, tape, and protective plastic.
  2. Clean any glue residue left over from the plastic or tape.
  3. Wash grill plates to remove machine oil from manufacturing. See Cleaning Section.
  4. Place the unit in the desired location.
  5. To avoid damage, only plug the unit into a properly grounded electrical supply matching the nameplate voltage.
  6. For cast-iron models only — season the grill plates.
    • A. Rub cooking oil into plates with a clean, lint-free cloth.
    • B. Heat grill to 400 °F (204 °C) and maintain temperature for 10–15 minutes; it is normal for the plates to smoke.
    • C. Allow the grill to cool completely, then use a clean, lint-free cloth to remove excess oil.
    • D. Repeat the process at least once more.

FEATURES AND CONTROLS

  • A. Handle — used to raise and lower the top grill plate.
  • B. Top Grill Plate — cooks food with a heating element.
  • C. Bottom Grill Plate — cooks food with a heating element.
  • D. Drip Tray — collects grease and oil under the grill plate.
  • E. Ready Light — glows when the surface reaches the set temperature.
  • F. Temperature Control Dial — sets the temperature of the\ heating surface; Stand By is off.
  • G. Power Switch — turns the unit on or off.
  • H. Temperature Safety Switch — cuts power if the unit overheats.
  • I. Tensioner Plugs — cover the tensioner screws.

OPERATION

  • WARNING Burn Hazard.
    • Do not touch cookware, heating surface, food, or liquid while heating nor allow skin to come into close contact with steam.
    • Allow hot surfaces to cool before handling or cleaning. Do not allow water to contact the cooking surface; splattering or spraying could occur.
  • WARNING Electrical Shock Hazard.
    • Keep liquids from entering the unit; this could cause a short circuit or electrical shock.
    • Do not spray the unit, cord, plug, or immerse the unit or components in liquid or foam.
  1. Turn the unit on with a Power Switch.
  2. Close the top grill plate. Set the thermostat to the desired temperature. Ready Light glows when a set temperature is reached.
  3. Open the top plate and center the food on the bottom plate.
  4. Use the handle to lower the Top Grill Plate.
  5. Heat for the desired length of time.
  6. Raise the handle and remove the food.
  7. After cooking, wipe down grill plates to remove fat, oil, and grease — and prevent carbon build-up.

CLEANING / MAINTENANCE

  • WARNING Burn Hazard.
    • Do not touch cookware, heating surface, food, or liquid while heating nor allow skin to come into close contact with steam.

    • Do not allow water to contact the cooking surface; splattering or spraying could occur.

Cleaning

NOTICE: Do not clean the unit with steel wool.
To maintain the appearance and increase service life, clean the unit daily.

  1. Turn the unit off with the Power Switch.
  2. Unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely.
  3. Wipe grease or oil into the drip tray.
  4. Cast-iron models only — use the included brush to scrub grill plates.
  5. Dip a cloth or sponge in soapy water and wipe the unit and plates.
  6. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  7. Cast-iron models only — if necessary, season plates per Unpacking and Initial Setup.
  8. Empty and clean the drip tray.

Maintenance
In time, the Top Grill plate will lower due to wear on the
Tensioner. To adjust:

  1. Turn the Power Switch off and allow the unit to cool completely.
  2. Remove silicone Tensioner Plugs (I) from screw holes.
  3. While testing the Top Griddle Plate movement, adjust Tensioner Screws with an M5 Allen wrench until desired tension is reached.
  4. Replace Tensioner Plugs by pushing them back into screw holes.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Problem Potential Cause Course of Action

Ready Light does not illuminate when the Temperature Control Dial is set to standby.| The unit is not plugged in.| Plug the unit in.
The Temperature Safety Switch is tripped.| Reset the Temperature Safety Switch per the instructions below.
Ready Light malfunctioned.| Contact Vollrath Technical Services.
Grill plates do not get hot.| Voltage from a power source (wall outlet) is low or zero.| Verify voltage matches nameplate rating. If not, have qualified personnel correct the power problem.
The heating element is faulty.| Contact Vollrath Technical Services.
The grill suddenly stops working.| The Temperature Safety Switch may have been activated.| Reset the Temperature Safety Switch per the instructions below.
The top plate does not hold itself up or is hard to move up/down.| The tensioner is improperly adjusted.| See Tensioner adjustment in the preceding maintenance section.

TEMPERATURE SAFETY SWITCH

This sandwich grill is equipped with a safety feature that shuts off power to the grill if the unit overheats.

If the Temperature Safety Switch is activated:

  1. Determine the cause of activation and correct it.
  2. Allow the unit to cool.
  3. Remove the cover from the switch on the back of the grill. Press and release the switch reset button. Replace the cover.
  4. Contact Vollrath Technical Services if switch activation continues.

SERVICE AND REPAIR

  • Serviceable parts are available on vollrathfoodservice.com.
  • To avoid serious injury or damage, never attempt to repair the unit or replace a damaged power cord yourself.
  • Do not send units directly to The Vollrath Company LLC. Please contact Vollrath Technical Services for instructions.
  • When contacting Vollrath Technical Services, please be ready with the item number, model number (if applicable), serial number, and proof of purchase showing the date the unit was purchased.
