- Timber framing must meet the requirements of NZBC E2/AS1-10.2 (20% for Insulated Buildings, 24% for non insulated Buildings) prior to lining. It is understood LVL frames have differing allowable moisture levels (to meet NZBC E2/AS1-10.2) Contact the LVL frame manufacturer to establish this level.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard is suitable for timber and light steel framing that has been specific Engineer designed.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard can be used in Wet Areas provided it meets the requirements of NZBC – E3/AS1 – 3.1.2(d).
- Warm Wall Plasterboard cannot be used behind Tiled Showers.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard can be used as a Ceiling Diaphragm in accordance with NZS3604:2011 Section 13.5.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard is fit for use as an internal wall brace as outlined in NZS 3604:2011. Install as per this site guide and in accordance with the Scion P21 test report for Warm Wall Plasterboard dated 08-11-22.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard is not certified for use as a Fire Rated / Soundproofing System.
Plasterboard Installation
- Warm Wall Plasterboard can be installed by any suitably qualified or competent installer.
- Installation is to be in accordance with this site guide .
- Installation details are as follows:
Standard Wall Fixing
- Warm Wall Plasterboard can be fixed to the wall frame with either horizontal fixing (board fixed at right angles to the studs). Or vertical fixing (board fixed parallel to the studs).
- Warm Wall Plasterboard must be fixed with 32mm x 6g plasterboard screws at 300crs to perimeter of sheet and along intermediate studs.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard sheet should be set approximately 5 – 10 mm off the floor to allow for wall frame movement.
- Daubs of wallboard adhesive should be applied to the wall frame away from the proposed screw fixing location.
- Never place the screw fixings through wallboard adhesive.
- Screw fixings min 12mm from the sheet edge (side) 18mm (top and bottom).
- When fixing over doors and windows it is recommended that joins do not occur on load bearing door and window studs.
- Joints should not occur within 200mm of door or window frame corners or on jamb studs as this is a point of stress.
- Dimensions for framing must comply with NZS 3604:2011 requirements.
- Studs must be spaced at 600mm centres maximum in accordance with NZS 3604:2011
- Wall frame must have two rows of nogs (max 2.70m high). Over 2.70m high nogs must be at 800crs.
Warm Wall Plasterboard Wall Sheet Edge Fixing (Non-Bracing)
Warm Wall Plasterboard Ceiling Fixing (Non-Bracing)
Standard Ceiling Fixing
- Fix ceiling sheets across ceiling battens or ceiling joists.
- Timber battens / ceiling joists to NZS 3604:2011 can be used.
- Steel ceiling battens fixed manufacturers specifications can be used.
- Battens to be at 400crs and fixed to NZS-3604 or manufacturers specifications.
- Fixings are as follows:
- Steel Battens – 25mm x 6g self-tapping plasterboard screws.
- Timber Battens – 32mm x 6g coarse thread plasterboard screws.
- Fix the edges of the sheet at the wall junction at 200mm centres.
- Do not nail sheets (screw fix only)
- Do not screw fix along the back blocked sheet end joint.
- Apply adhesive to battens or joists at 200mm centres between centre and edge of sheet.
- Position the sheet hard up to the wall framing.
- Sheet end joints must not be made on framing and must be back-blocked.
- Adhesive must not be applied to the sheet edges or under screws.
- All joints between sheets should be touch fitted.
- Stagger sheet end joints along ceiling.
Warm Wall Plasterboard Ceiling Fixing (Non-Bracing)
Back-blocking
- Back-blocking is designed to minimise the cracking of joints.
- Back-blocking is generally used where butt or end jointing of sheets occur between framing members and to recessed joints where a high standard of finish is required.
- Do not use sheet lining adhesives for back blocking.
- Cut back-blocks at least 200mm wide and long enough to fit loosely between the framing members.
- Apply plaster-based setting type adhesive/cement to backblocks over the full face of the back-block.
- Fit Warm Wall Plasterboard at right angles to framing members. Place back-blocks centrally along the full length of the sheet edge.
- Immediately after the blocks are in place erect the next board.
- Ceiling back-blocks may be cemented into position from above the ceiling after the sheet has been fixed and before they are flush jointed.
Braced Wall Fixing (WWP1)
- Warm Wall Plasterboard can be installed by a suitably competent or qualified person.
- Installation is to be in accordance with this specification.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard must be fitted vertically when used as a brace.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard is fit for use as an internal wall brace as outlined in NZS 3604:2011 (as per Scion P21 test report for Warm Wall Plasterboard dated 08-11-22).
- Wall Framing to be at max 600crs in accordance with NZS3604:2011 with 2 rows of nogs up to 2.70m. Higher wall frame requires nogs @ 800crs.
- Wall Framing to be calculated using NZS-3604:2011.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard is not to be used as a brace in wet areas.
- Warm Wall Plasterboard has the following bracing value (in accordance with Scion P21 Test report for Warm Wall Plasterboard dated 16-11-22:
- WWP1 – 0.40m wide 50 BU/m (Earthquake), 60 BU/m (Wind)
- WWP1 – 0.60m wide 55 BU/m (Earthquake), 65 BU/m (Wind)
- WWP1 – 1.20m wide 60 BU/m (Earthquake), 70 BU/m (Wind)
- These bracing values are based on 10mm Warm Wall Plasterboard (WWP1) on wall framing in accordance with NZS-3604:2011. Boards are fixed with 32mm x 6g Plasterboard screws with a 50, 50, 50, 75, 75, 150mm crs fixing pattern in each corner to plates and studs to sheet perimeter.
- For walls other than 2.4m high (in accordance with NZS3604:2011). Use this calculation to determine BU/m: 2.4 / Element Height x BU/m from P21 test results above. Example: For a 1.2m Brace on a 2.70m Stud 2.4 / 2.7 x 78 = 69BU/m (Wind)
- Bottom plate fixed with M12 hold down + 50sq washer at each end of brace.
- Brace cannot be intersected by a wall. Brace must remain whole.
- Brace cannot have any penetrations (light switches / power plugs etc) within 90mm of the edge of the sheet lining. The maximum size of these penetrations is 90mm x 90mm.
Installation Details are as follows:

- Ceiling diaphragms shall not exceed 12m in length and the length shall not exceed twice the width (measured between supporting walls).
- The ceiling lining shall cover the entire area of the ceiling diaphragm.
- Ceiling Diaphragm Systems:
- Not steeper than 15 degrees and not longer than 7.5m
- Not steeper than 25 degrees and not longer than 12m
- Not steeper than 45 degrees and not longer than 7.5m
- Minimum 10mm Warm Wall Plasterboard to ceiling diaphragm
- Ceiling battens shall be spaced at maximum 400mm centres.
