Getting started
You can place the charcoal barbecue directly onto the garden table and prepare food right there.
Risk of fire!
- Do not place the charcoal grill on textile surfaces such as a tablecloth.
- Never place the charcoal grill under or directly next to flammable items such as curtains or drapes.
- Maintain a clearance of at least 100 cm around the appliance to flammable and combustible materials.
Inserting the batteries
Rechargeable batteries are not suitable for this charcoal barbecue. Use
conventional alkaline batteries only.
The battery compartment (10) is located on the underside of the housing (8).
- Turn the charcoal barbecue upside down and place it carefully on an even, stable surface.
- Open the battery compartment cover (10). Using a finger or fingernail, reach from the outer edge under the latch of the battery compartment and pull it slightly in the direction of the arrow ( ).
- Insert four AA batteries into the battery compartment (10). Always pay attention to the polarity.
- Close the battery compartment cover (10). Make sure that the latch engages again so that the cover cannot open and the batteries fall out accidentally.
- Place the charcoal grill upright again. It is then ready to use.
If the grill performance deteriorates or the unit takes a long time to fire up, check or replace the batteries.
Usage
Before using for the first time, clean the stainless steel grate (1) and the
grease collection tray/reflector (6). This removes dust and any packaging
residue. For more on this, please refer to the “Maintenance/cleaning” section
on page 48.
When firing the charcoal grill on for the first time, have the charcoal glow
for 30 minutes, before using it to prepare food.
Minor smoke development can occur when the appliance is heated first when
starting a new barbecue session. For this reason, the appliance should be
heated for 10 to 15 minutes prior to preparing grilled food for the first
time.
-
Loosen both latches (7) and remove the stainless steel grate (1).
-
Place the appliance on an even, non-slip and dry surface.
-
Remove the charcoal container (4) and its cover (3) and fill the charcoal container (4) with approx. 0.2 kg charcoal up to the upper edge of the container. For optimum cooking results you should use barbecue charcoal and not charcoal briquettes.
Warning
Do not use any other fuel than charcoal. -
Apply a 10 mm thick ring of fire gel around the center of the fire gel tray (5). The fire gel should be within the circle stamped on the fire gel tray (5). Otherwise, the flame could be smothered. If the fire gel tray (5) slips out of place, put it back into the center of the grease collection tray/reflector (6). If you fill a little water (no higher than the MAX mark) into the grease collection tray/reflector (6), not only does it make it easier to clean the grease collection tray/reflector (6) later, it also makes it harder for any drops of fat to ignite.
-
Hold a burning match to the fire gel, until it burns.
Risk of burns!
Do not reach into the naked flame! -
Turn the control dial (9) to the MAX position (clockwise until it stops) to power on the fan. You must power on the fan prior to inserting the charcoal container (4). Otherwise, the flame will be smothered.
-
Insert the charcoal container (4) again with its cover (3).
Risk of burns!
Always wear barbecue gloves when inserting the charcoal container (4). Otherwise you could get burnt! When grilling, always wear heat-resistant gloves in accordance with the PPE Ordinance (category II for heat protection, DIN-EN 407). -
Replace the stainless steel grate (1). Turn the grate such that the two brackets (2) are aligned with the latches (7). Lock the stainless steel grate (1) into place.
- Place the grilled food onto the stainless steel grate (1), as soon as the charcoal is covered with a layer of ash. This normally takes 5 minutes at maximum fan speed.
- If undesired flame formation occurs during charcoal glowing, reduce the air supply using the control dial (9). To do this, turn it anti-clockwise.
Next, you can prepare grilled dishes using your ventilated charcoal grill. With a little practice, you can regulate the fan speed and thus the heat using the control dial (9). This way, you can either grill your dishes crispier or cook them gently.
-
Once you are done grilling, switch the charcoal grill off. Turn the control dial (9) counter-clockwise to the OFF position, until it engages.
-
Remove the prepared dishes from the stainless steel grate (1).
Risk of burns!
After the fan is switched off, the charcoal can still be glowing for some time
and the stainless steel grate (1) can be very hot. Be careful not to burn
yourself.
Tips for good grilling results
- After firing up, leave the control dial (9) in the maximum position (clockwise until it stops) so that the ventilated charcoal grill can heat up evenly. If unwanted flames appear during the charcoal warming up phase, reduce the fan speed by turning the control dial (9). To do this, turn it anti-clockwise.
- The unit allows low-fat, healthy cooking of meat, fish, sausages, poultry and vegetables. It may be necessary to cut large or thick pieces of meat into smaller pieces or thinner slices.
- Do not pierce the meat so it does not lose liquid. Otherwise it can dry out.
- Season the food and turn it occasionally. We recommend the use of wooden barbecue tongs. You can also brush fish with butter.
- At the top fan speed, the charcoal grill heats up very quickly. Keep an eye on thin pieces of food and sausages to stop them burning. Turn it frequently or turn the fan speed down.
- Most of the heat develops around the covered part in the centre of the stainless steel grate. For a good grilling result, thicker slices of meat should therefore be placed there. Put bread near the edge to toast it.
- Do not grill pickled or smoked meat.
- Cut any charred or burnt pieces of food off and do not eat them. Also, make sure you do not drip any beer on meat or sausages. Crusts and burnt bits can be carcinogenic!
- Cut the fat from the edge of the meat and, for best results, only use lean meat cut into small pieces. If the fat ignites and flames appear, turn the control dial (9) counter-clockwise to the “OFF” position and take the meat from which the fat is dripping off the stainless steel grate (1). Once the flames have disappeared, you can increase the fan speed again using the control dial (9) and place the food back onto the grate. Do not extinguish the flames with water.
Topping up the charcoal
You can top up the charcoal if necessary. It is best to do this before the
charcoal in the charcoal container (4) is used up. This means the new charcoal
can be kindled from the existing embers.
Risk of burns!
Always wear barbecue gloves to top up the charcoal. Otherwise you could get
burnt. When grilling, always wear heat-resistant gloves in accordance with the
PPE Ordinance (category II for heat protection, DIN-EN 407).
Warning about property damage
Only put the charcoal container (4) and its cover (3) on heat-resistant
surfaces. Otherwise, the surface could be damaged by these hot accessories.
- Switch the ventilated charcoal grill off if you wish to top up the charcoal. Turn the control dial (9) counter-clockwise to the OFF position, until it engages.
- Remove any remaining food from the stainless steel grate (1).
- Loosen both latches (7) and remove the stainless steel grate (1). Place the stainless steel grate (1) on a suitable surface.
- Remove the cover of the charcoal container (3). It is best to do this with barbecue tongs and always wear barbecue gloves. Otherwise you could get burnt. When grilling, always wear heat-resistant gloves in accordance with the PPE Ordinance (category II for heat protection, DIN-EN 407).
- Place the cover of the charcoal container (3) on a suitable surface.
- Add the new charcoal to the charcoal container (4). When you do so, make sure that you do not overfill the charcoal container (4) so that you can close it again once you have finished.
- Place the cover (3) onto the charcoal container (4). Replace the stainless steel grate (1). Turn the grate such that the two brackets (2) are aligned with the latches (7). Lock the stainless steel grate (1) into place.
- Turn the control dial (9) to the MAX position (clockwise until it stops) to power on the fan. Wait a few minutes for the new charcoal to kindle and for any smoke to dissipate. You can then continue grilling.
Maintenance/cleaning
In order to avoid burning food residues, clean the ventilated charcoal grill after every use.
Risk of burns!
Wait until the ventilated charcoal grill is completely cool before cleaning
it. Otherwise you could get burnt.
Warning about property damage
Do not use abrasive or astringent detergents or tools which could scratch the
surface (e.g. metal sponges). These could damage the ventilated charcoal
grill.
- Loosen both latches (7) and remove the stainless steel grate (1).
- Remove the charcoal container (4) with its cover (3).
- Remove the grease collection tray/reflector (6).
- Clean the stainless steel grate (1) and the grease collection tray/reflector (6) in the sink using washing-up liquid. You can carefully tap the charcoal container (4) with its cover (3) and clean it using a brush or dry cloth as needed. Clean the housing (8) with a slightly moistened cloth.
The stainless steel grate (1) and the grease collection tray/reflector (6) are dishwasher-safe to a maximum of 60 °C.
Storing the ventilated charcoal grill
Store the ventilated charcoal grill in assembled condition in the carrying bag
to protect it. Store the ventilated charcoal grill in a dry and dust-free
place.
