Product Usage Instructions
Preparation:
- Thread the securing clamp onto both wheels, ensuring it is turned the correct way.
- Thread the sleeve on and tighten using the adapter screw.
Note: Perform preparatory work before departure if snow chains may be needed later on.
Installation:
- Attach the brace in the groove on the adapter screw.
- Ensure the brace is fitted correctly in the groove on the adapter screw.
Note: Do not let the cable run around the securing arm.
Centring the Chain:
Drive the vehicle forwards and/or backward to center the chain on the wheel.
Light acceleration helps in centring the snow chain.
Important Notes:
- Snow chains must only be installed on the driving wheels.
- If driving a four-wheel-drive car, install snow chains on the front wheels.
- Do not drive if snow chains are not correctly installed to avoid damage to the vehicle.
Removal and Adjustment:
- Removing: Follow the reverse steps of installation for removal.
- Adjusting Chain Length: A shortening block may be used for adjustment based on tire type, wear, or make.

General
Parts included
General
The snow chains have been developed to improve the grip of the driving wheels
when driving and braking in snowy or icy conditions. They are not intended for
any other use. Air pressure in tires stated by the manufacturer also apply
when using snow chains. The snow chains have been developed to fit tire
dimensions for summer and winter tires according to DIN and ETRTO. If snow
chains in the correct size and correct fit cannot be found they should not be
used. Contact your dealer.
NOTE
Try installing and removing snow chains at home before use. After driving for
a longer period, the chains should be checked again so that they are correctly
positioned.
Care instructions
Never treat the chains with oil. The chains are manufactured of quality steel,
but they are not rust protected. Mild rust attacks do not affect the quality
of the chain. Rinse the snow chains with lukewarm water and dry well before
placing in the bag for longterm storage.
IMPORTANT
Read through all the instructions before starting installation. Follow the
instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may cause damage to
the snow chains or car, and may also result in an increased risk of accidents.
Preparation
Remove any hubcaps and wheel bolt caps so that the wheel bolts are accessible.
NOTE
All operations must be carried out on both wheels.
Adapter
- Thread the securing clamp on. Ensure that the securing clamp is turned the correct way.
- Thread the sleeve on.
- Tighten using the adapter screw.
NOTE
Ensure that the securing clamp is turned the correct way.
- The adapter screw should be tightened using the wrench supplied with the chain or with a torque wrench to 20-25 Nm. Check that the adapter is secure.
- If there is an imbalance after attachment, secure the adapter on the opposite wheel bolt.
- When driving without chains for a long time, we recommend that you remove the adapter for the wheel bolt.
Tip : The preparatory work can be performed before departure, if snow chains may be needed later on.
Installation
- Try to get the chain on as large a part of the tyre as possible. Place the chain a long way onto the tyre.
- The locking arm must be positioned close but without touching the wheel rim.
- Attach the brace in the groove on the adapter screw.
- Make sure that the brace is fitted in the groove on the adapter screw.
NOTE
The cable must not run around the securing arm.
- Turn the orange-coloured safety bracket so that the locking arm cannot unhook from the adapter.
- Press the snow chain’s arms to the tyre with one hand. At the same time turn the knob to the right with the other hand to tighten the chain.
- Drive the vehicle forwards and/or backwards so that the chain centres itself on the wheel. A light acceleration simplifies centring the snow chain.
- The snow chains should be installed before driving on parts of the road with deep snow or snow drifts. If you nevertheless drive into a snow drift and get stuck, it is still possible to get the chains on by installing the chains and lightly spinning the wheel. Check that the entire chain is pulled up on the wheel.
IMPORTANT
- The snow chains may only be installed on the driving wheels. On four wheel drive\ cars the snow chains must be installed on\ the front wheels.
- The car must not be driven if the snow chains are not correctly installed. Ensure that the chain is evenly aligned over the whole wheel. If the chain is incorrectly located it can hit other parts of the vehicle.
Removal and adjustment of the chain length
Removing
- Pull out the knob and turn to the left to release the chain.
- Remove the securing arm and pull the chain from the tyre.
- Drive the vehicle a little bit so that the chain releases completely from the tyre.
Adjusting the chain length
- There must be a clearance of a maximum of 10 mm between the surface of the tyre and the chain.
- If the play is larger there is a greater risk that the chain will fall off. Shorten the chain by installing the shortening block.
- If the play is less the chain can be difficult to remove. Extend the chain by removing the shortening block.
- If the chain does not pull itself on to the wheel after repeated attempts it must be extended.
IMPORTANT
Adjustment may be necessary depending on tyre type, tyre wear or make of tyre.
Shortening block
Shortening blocks may be required if the elastic chain shorteners are worn ormissing.
Safety instructions
WARNING
- For safety reasons never exceed the recommended speed limit of 50 km/h. In certain countries, this speed limit may be even lower. Respect the speed limit!
- Snow chains change the driving characteristics of the car. On roads without snow or ice the car has an increased braking distance. Always adapt driving to the prevailing road conditions. Always follow the car manufacturer’s instructions regarding use of snow chains when this is described in the car’s Owners Manual. This also applies to vehicles with four-wheel drive.
NOTE
- Inspect the chains before each use. If they show more than 50% wear, or if any link has broken, the chains should no longer be used. If a link in the chain has broken the chains should be removed immediately to prevent damage to the car.
- The snow chains are an important part of the safety equipment for driving on winter surfaces. Follow the instructions carefully, to ensure a long service life of the chains. Volvo Cars disclaims all liability for any personal injury and material damage or loss of chains if these were caused by a failure to follow the instructions.
- Check that the tyre dimension stated on the package matches with the tyre dimension on your car. The designations must be absolutely identical since there is a considerable difference between, e.g., 225/60 R16 and 225/55 R16.
IMPORTANT
Avoid hard acceleration and wheel spin because this causes significant wear to
the chains. Remember that the service life of the chains is completely
dependent on the driving style. Careful driving increases the service life of
chains.
FAQ
Q: Can snow chains be used on all types of tyres?
A: Snow chains are developed to fit tire dimensions for both summer and winter
tires according to DIN and ETRTO standards. If correct size and fit cannot be
found, do not use them. Contact your dealer for guidance.
Q: Can I exceed the recommended speed limit with snow chains installed?
A: For safety reasons, never exceed the recommended speed limit of 50 km/h. In
some countries, this limit may be even lower. Always respect the speed limit
to ensure safety.
