MAL-160 electric heating mats

They are designed for installation under floor panels. The mat is installed in dry technology, directly under the panels.

The choice of heating based on heating mats has a number of advantages and benefits:

  • Simple assembly , which does not require large renovation work and many hours devoted to the execution of the entire installation,
  • Low investment cost , especially compared to traditional water floor heating,
  • Remarkable responsiveness compared to other heating systems. We do not have to wait for the stove to heat the water, which then gives the heat to the room. The electric heating cable heats almost immediately after initiating work,
  • Simple operation. In combination with a programmable temperature controller, the whole  becomes an extremely intelligent and intuitive system that ensures comfortable heat in our homes,
  • Environmentally friendly system , no noise, no dust and no pollution,
  • The floor heating system saves valuable space in the room. The system is invisible and discreet, providing greater flexibility in creating the perfect living environment. The only visible element of the system is the room temperature regulator.
  • Saving! Low operating costs, which are influenced by the extraordinary responsiveness of the system, as well as its efficiency. In addition, in combination with a system of photovoltaic panels, we can have practically free heating in our house!

The MAL-160 heating mat system is reliable, safe and manufactured with durability and comfort of use in mind.

PROJECTS

The first and very important stage is the design of the entire heating system.

Mission Air® MAL-160 heating mats can be used as:

The only essential heating system in the room.

In this case, make sure that the power generated by the system will exceed the heat loss in the room. In order for the system to be efficient and comfortable for the household members, it is assumed that it should cover at least 2/3 of the room area.
For the main source of space heating, the use of temperature controllers with programmable functions is strongly recommended. Choosing such a solution will allow us to plan the operation of the system for individual scenarios. Correctly selected settings will ensure that the system is subsequently virtually maintenance-free and energy consumption remains as low as possible.

An additional, supporting heating system in the room.

This solution is recommended when we want to achieve the warm floor effect we like so much, without giving up the current main source of heating. In this case, you can consider using simpler, manual temperature controllers, usually based on readings from a floor temperature sensor.

As a rule of thumb, an electric underfloor heating system is simply a large underfloor radiator. Therefore, it is definitely not allowed to limit its work by using permanent furniture on its surface. Places where there are or are to be buildings or other permanent elements adjacent to the floor (e.g. a thick carpet or a bed for our pet) should be subtracted from the heating mats arrangement plan.

This principle should also be kept in mind when rearranging or renovating a given room in the future. When designing the system, the mandatory distance to the walls of min. 5cm.

If you share an apartment with electric heating mats installed, be sure to inform the people who will be staying there. When selling a property, also inform new buyers about the heating system used.  We do not use MAL-160 electric heating mats in rooms exposed to increased humidity. Such places include primarily: bathrooms, drying rooms, utility rooms and kitchens. In such rooms, mats from the MA-160 series should be used, adapted for installation in the adhesive layer under the tiles.

Before commencing assembly work, a detailed layout plan of the system should be prepared in a specially designated part of the manual. Failure to follow the detailed plan may result in loss of warranty coverage.

Include:

  • Outline of the room with dimensions,
  • Marking of places of permanent development,
  • Locations of doors and windows,
  • Laying mats with their length and strength marked,
  • Thermostat location,
  • Location of the floor temperature sensor (if present).

TEMPERATURE REGULATOR AND FLOOR TEMPERATURE

  • The regulator should be placed at a height of about 150 cm from the floor, in a place free of drafts, out of direct sunlight.
  • Most thermostats have a wired floor temperature sensor, which should be placed in the optional protective guide conduit and placed centrally under the regulator at a distance of about 50 cm from the wall.
  • The thermostat should be installed in a special mounting box.
  • Regulators should not be installed in damp rooms.

FLOOR SENSOR INSTALLATION

  • Protective conduits should be placed in the part of the floor that will be least used and not loaded with solid elements, thus protecting the sensor against possible mechanical damage.
  • The protective pipe of the temperature sensor should be routed in the floor, parallel to the adjacent heating cables.
  • The end of the temperature sensor conduit must necessarily be within the planned location and impact of the heating mat.
  • Insert the temperature sensor into the properly prepared conduit.

ATTENTION!

  • Although the heating system does not require annual maintenance, care must be taken to ensure that the system is not damaged. Never pierce the floor. Puncture of an electrically conductive element with a nail or screw may cause the fuse to trip, which will cut off the power supply to the entire system, and in extreme cases, this situation may lead to the risk of electric shock.
  • Heating mats should not be placed under permanent furniture. This could trap heat and potentially cause localized overheating.
  • Please inform all professionals dealing with any repairs or renovations, if they work in the area of the installed heating system, about the heating system used. These persons should read the information contained in the installation and operating instructions before starting work.
  • Unfamiliarity with the heating system used and failure to comply with the information contained in its manual may result in a risk of electric shock.
  • Be sure to measure the system resistance as instructed on the following pages. The tolerance of mat resistance results is +10% / -5%. If an incorrect measurement value is found at any stage, further work should be refrained from.
  • Heating mats are designed for floor mounting. It is forbidden to mount them on walls or ceilings.
  • Do not cut or shorten heating cables. You can cut the underlay mat. The possibilities of cutting the mesh, depending on the given situation, are presented.
  • The heating mat cannot be combined in one circuit with other heating devices.
  • The materials used for the floor covering must have a thermal resistance of 80°C.
  • It is unacceptable to install the heating mat without a regulator, directly to the power supply. It is strictly forbidden to connect the mat directly to the socket/socket.
  • Heating mats must not overlap or touch each other. The distance between the heating cables should be at least 10 cm.
  • During installation work, wear shoes with flat and rubber soles only. If possible, avoid stepping on heating cables.
  • All installation materials must be suitable for underfloor heating. Turn off the main power supply during installation work.
  • A heating system based on electric heating mats cannot be installed at temperatures below 5°C, During the installation, follow the previously made project. If the concept changes during installation, it must be clearly indicated in the project.
  • The rolled-up heating mat must not be connected to the power supply.
  • The manual together with a correctly made design and a correctly completed warranty card should be kept for future renovation and installation works and for warranty purposes.
  • Do not repair the heating mat yourself.
  • It is unacceptable to use nails, screws or other assembly elements not indicated in the manual.
  • Keep a distance from other heat sources (minimum 25 cm).
  • When installing more than one mat, they should be connected in parallel, never in series,
  • MAL-160 heating mats are designed for installation under floor panels,
  • Make sure that the floor panels used are adapted to electric floor heating,
  • The entire system should be made in an individual electrical circuit, using residual current devices.
  • The power cord cannot overlap the heating mat, it should be routed next to the mat.
  • The parameters of the mat may slightly differ from the values indicated in the technical data.
  • Checking the system design, connecting the system to the power supply and measuring the system resistance must be carried out by a qualified electrician who will certify the correct installation in the warranty card.

PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION

  • Check whether the parameters of the received product are in accordance with the order,
  • Check if the heating mat has no visible damage. Installation of a damaged heating mat is unacceptable.
  • When installing more than one mat within a common system, check that the unit wattage of the mats is identical. It is not allowed to use mats with different unit powers in one system.
  • Check if you have all the elements and accessories necessary for assembly.
  • Check the parameters of the electrical installation and make sure that the demand for electrical power is sufficient. Calculate the planned power of the installed system. If the electric power of the installation is greater than the existing connection, the electric power of the connection should be increased.
  • Check the maximum permissible load of the regulator. If the power of the installed system exceeds 80% of the maximum load of the regulator, a contractor should be used.
  • Make a layout plan for the entire system in the designated place in the manual
  • Thoroughly clean the floor of any dirt or dust. Make sure there is no moisture in the mounting location.

INITIAL START-UP OF THE HEATING SYSTEM

After connecting the temperature controller, the entire system is practically ready for operation. The system should be warmed up gradually over the next few days, starting from a temperature of 18°C.
If glue was used to lay the floor panels, the first start-up of the system should be postponed for several days.

  • Please read the instructions carefully to ensure safe and efficient installation. Remember that the final electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician and the warranty card must be properly completed and signed by the electrician assembling the entire system to ensure warranty protection.
  • The Mission Air® Heating System should only be installed by qualified personnel who are familiar with the construction and operation of the product and take into account the risks of handling it differently from those indicated in the instructions.
  • Mission Air Sp. z o.o. is not liable for damages resulting from non-compliance with the instructions.

  3. Insulating/damping underlay
  4. Proper floor

INSTALLATION OF THE MAL-160 HEATING MAT:

  1. Mount the electrical box in the wall in the place where the temperature controller is to be installed, remember to lead the mains power cables to the box,

  2. Make a groove in the wall and in the floor for the protective conduit,*

  3. Clean the floor thoroughly and then install the protective conduit with the floor temperature sensor. Remember that the temperature sensor must be located directly under the influence of the heating mat, run in parallel between the heating cables or between two strips of the mat, the sensor cable must not intersect with the heating cable,*

  4. On a properly cleaned floor surface, spread the insulating underlay,

  5. In the place where the floor temperature sensor is located, cut a small piece of underlay,*

  6. Make the first measurement of the resistance of the heating wire and insulation. The measurement of the resistance of the heating cable should be similar to the parameters shown in the table on the next page.
The measurement result should be entered in the warranty card. The insulation resistance should be around 10Ω.

  7. Spread the heating mat on the floor of the room in accordance with the previously prepared design.
Remember that the heating cable must not be cut. However, it is advisable to cut the mounting mat in order to adjust the arrangement of the heating mat to the design and shape of the room. By properly cutting the mat, we can change the direction of the mat, avoid obstacles in the room, and even reverse the direction of the mat, which will allow for the perfect arrangement of parallel stripes. The possibilities of cutting the mesh, depending on the given situation, are presented .

  8. It is recommended to take photographs of the heating mats laid out on the floor.

  9. Connect the individual strips of the mat with aluminum tape.

  10. Insert the power cords into the protective pipe, and then into the flush-mounted box, where the temperature controller will be installed.

  11. At this stage, a second measurement of the system resistance should be made. The result should be entered in the warranty card. If the second measurement differs significantly from the first and from the data in the table, it means that the system was damaged during the laying of mats in the room.

  12. Turn on the heating mat to check if it works properly. The heat should be felt within a few minutes.

  13. Start laying the floor panels. Remember to perform all preparatory activities related to cutting or shortening the panels outside the underfloor heating installation area

  14. After laying the floor covering, make a final measurement of the resistance of the system. Record the result in the warranty card. If the measurement differs significantly from the previous ones and from the data in the table, it means that the system was damaged during the laying of the floor panels.

  15. In the previously prepared box with the mat power cables, mains power cables and optionally with the temperature sensor cable, install the temperature regulator. During installation, follow the installation instructions provided by the thermostat manufacturer.*
