Using the device for the fi rst time

5.1. What are you permitted to copy?
NOTICE!
Insofar as you do not own the copyright or the permission of the copyright owner, any unauthorised reproduction of discs can represent an infringement of national or international law and can incur serious criminal penalties. If you are unsure of your rights please seek legal advice.
5.2. Connecting the cables

  • Connect the miniUSB plug on the cable to the relevant connection on your external burner.
  • Connect the other end of the USB cable to the computer.
  • Boot up your computer and wait until Windows® has fully loaded.
  • The burner will be automatically recognised and connected up by the operating system.

5.3. Using the drive as a boot drive
The optical drive can be used to boot (start) an operating system.
** This requires you to make corresponding settings in the BIOS of the PC/notebook. Your external USB burner must be set here as the first boot device (before the hard drive). Also read the operating instructions for your PC/notebook.
5.4. How to load a disc:
NOTICE!
Risk of damage!**
The high speeds in the drive can cause defective media to break and damage your device. Damage caused by faulty media is not covered under warranty and repairs will be chargeable.

  • Do not use scratched, broken, dirty or poor quality discs.
  • Do not stick protective film or other stickers onto the discs because the adhesive could damage the surface of the disc and destroy your data.
  • Inspect discs carefully before inserting them. If damage or dirt is visible, do not use these discs.

This optical drive uses a mount to hold the disc.
When inserting the disc ensure that it is pressed into the mount correctly and that it clicks into position there.

  • Press the eject button on the front of the optical drive to open the drawer.
  • Insert the disc into the drawer with the label facing upwards and carefully press it down. The disc must audibly click into the mount.
  • Carefully push the disc drawer back into the device until it audibly clicks into place.
    NOTICE!
Some discs start automatically when they are inserted. This depends on the operating system and the corresponding settings.

5.5. Playing/reading discs
Your optical drive is capable of playing audio CDs, DVD films or data CDs/DVDs.
Once a disc has been loaded, a dialogue box opens containing various playback options.
Normally, there will be a number of different options available.
If the dialogue box does not open, there is always the option of accessing the optical drive via Explorer or the workstation.
Depending on the DVD/audio CD and the software installed, it may be necessary for you to open a suitable playback program.
5.5.1. How to remove a disc:

  • Press the eject button on the optical drive to open the drawer.
  • Remove the disc and store it in a CD case in a secure location.
    NOTICE!
Do not attempt to remove the CD from the drive when the PC is accessing the disc. This can cause the system to crash.

5.6. Emergency release of a blocked disc
If the drawer no longer opens automatically, it can still be opened manually.

  • Restart the computer, if the drawer is still blocked then proceed as described below.
  • Close Windows® and switch off your computer.
  • Insert a long pointed object (e.g. straightened paperclip) into the emergency release until you feel some resistance. A slight push now opens the drawer.
  • Remove the disc.

Customer service

7.1. Troubleshooting
7.1.1. General information
Regularly running the Windows® “Defragmenting” and “ScanDisk” programs can eliminate sources of error and improve the performance of the system.
7.1.2. Find the cause
Malfunctions often occur for the simplest of reasons, but some can also be complex and require a lot of analysis.
7.1.3. Check cables and connections
Start by carefully checking all the cable connections. If the indicator lamps are not on ensure that the computer and all peripheral devices are connected to the power supply.
Turn off the computer and check all cable connections. If the computer is connected to peripheral devices, check all cable connections here too. Do not swap around the cables for the various devices, even if they look alike. The polarity of the various cables may be different. Once you have ensured that the power supply is working correctly and all connections are intact, then switch the computer back on.
7.2. Technical support
This drive has been thoroughly and successfully tested in our test laboratory with a wide variety of devices.
However, the drivers will need to be updated from time to time. This is because there may be compatibility problems with other components (programs, devices) which have not yet been tested. You can find driver updates and the latest information on your product on the Internet; the website address for our service portal can be found in the chapter “Legal notice”.
7.2.1. Do you need more help?
If the suggestions in the previous sections did not solve your problem please contact us. Tomake it easier for us to help you, please have the following information to hand:

  • How is your computer configured?
  • What peripheral devices do you use?
  • What messages appear on the screen?

Please keep your original proof of purchase in a safe place. The warranty provider reserves the right to refuse to confirm the status of the warranty or to carry out a repair under warranty if a valid proof of purchase cannot be produced.
If it is necessary to return your device for repair, please ensure that it is suitably packaged for transportation. Unless otherwise specified, you shall bear the costs for sending the device and the transport risk. The warranty provider does not assume any liability for additional materials sent with the product that do not belong to the original package contents supplied with the product.
Please enclose as much information as possible about the fault when sending the device to the warranty provider. 10.1.1. Scope
In the event of a fault on your product that is covered by this warranty, the warranty provider guarantees to repair or replace the product. The decision about whether to repair or replace the device is taken by the warranty provider. Therefore, the warranty provider can at its own discretion decide to replace a device submitted for repair under warranty with a refurbished device of the same quality.
No warranty is provided for batteries or rechargeable batteries or for consumable materials i.e. parts which have to be replaced at regular intervals during the normal use of the product e.g. video projector lamps.
A pixel error (permanently coloured, light or dark point in an image) is not generally considered a fault. Please refer to the information provided in the manual for this product for the precise number of permissible defects in the image.
The warranty provider gives no warranty for burnt-in images on plasma or LCD devices that result from the improper use of the device. Please refer to the information provided in the manual for this product for precise instructions on operating your plasma or LCD device. The warranty does not cover errors relating to the playback of data media that have been created in an incompatible format or as a result of using unsuitable software.
If it is discovered during the repair that the fault concerned is not covered under warranty, the warranty provider reserves the right to invoice the customer for the costs already incurred in the form of a flat-rate handling charge, as well as to charge the customer for the materials and labour required for the repair after submitting a cost estimate. You will be informed in advance as the customer about these repair charges; you are responsible for accepting or rejecting the repair process.
10.1.2. Exclusions
Malfunctions and damage to the device caused by external influences, accidental damage, improper use, changes made to the product, modifications, upgrades, the use of third-party parts, neglect, viruses or software faults, improper transport, improper packaging or loss during the return of the product are not covered by the warranty issued by the warranty provider.

10.1.3. Service Hotline
Before sending the device to the warranty provider, you must contact us via the Service Hotline or the Service Portal. This ensures that you receive further information on how to make a valid claim under warranty.
The use of the hotline may be subject to a charge.

The warranty covers material and labour costs for restoring the functionality of the product concerned. The warranty can be invalidated if any damage to the product itself or the supplied options results from the addition of any hardware to your product that is not produced or distributed by the warranty provider.
A limited warranty is provided for supplied software. This applies to a pre- installed operating system and also to supplied programs. For software supplied with the device by the warranty provider, a warranty is issued that any data media, e.g. discs and CD-ROMs on which the software is supplied, shall be free from faults in terms of their materials and workmanship for a period of 90 days following purchase. In the event of a faulty data medium being supplied, the warranty provider shall replace the faulty data medium free of charge; any further claims are excluded. Excluding the warranty for data media, all software is supplied without warranty. Furthermore, it is not warranted that this software shall function without interruption or errors or that it will meet your requirements. In the case of map material supplied for a device with navigation functions, no warranty is provided for its completeness.
It may be necessary to delete all data from the device in order to repair it. Please ensure that you have a backup copy for all of the data on the device before sending back the device. We expressly point out that the factory settings will be restored in the event of a repair. The warranty provider assumes no liability for the cost of a software configuration, lost revenue, loss of data or software, or other consequential damages.
