Phoenix Controls 651-320-001 Programmable BACnet Controller

BEFORE YOU START

Before working with the PBC or any optional communication modules, discharge static electricity by touching a known, securely grounded object. The microprocessors and associated circuitry within the controller are sensitive to static discharge.

MOUNTING THE PBC

  • Mount the controller in a location that allows clearance for wiring, servicing, and module removal.
  • Avoid areas with excessive moisture, fumes, or explosive vapors; or with excessive moisture, corrosive fumes, or explosive vapors; where vibration or shock is likely to occur; or a location subject to electrical noise.
  • Horizontal mounting is strongly recommended to achieve maximum heat dissipation and meet the operating temperature upper limit. Any other mounting orientation reduces this upper limit.
  • For a unit mounted inside an enclosure, ensure that the enclosure is designed to keep the unit within its required operating temperature range (considering a 24-watt dissipation by the controller); especially when the controller is mounted inside an enclosure with other heat-producing equipment.
  • US only : This device must be installed in a UL-listed enclosure offering adequate space to maintain the segregation of the line voltage field wiring and Class 2 field wiring.

Permissible Mounting Orientations

Mounting on a DIN Rail

  • Mounting on a 35 mm wide DIN rail is recommended, especially for installations with optional modules, and is preferable to tab mounting.
  • The unit base has a molded DIN rail slot and locking clip, as do optional communication modules.
  • DIN rail mounting ensures the alignment of the connectors between all devices.
  • The 35 mm DIN rail should be securely mounted, with at least two screws near the rail ends.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Screw mount the DIN rail on the wall/surface, be sure to anchor both ends.
  2. Extend all red mounting clips to the unlock position.
  3. Tilt the controller to hook over the DIN rail. Push down and in on the unit, fastening to the rail. Push the locking clips up to secure in place.

Wall Mounting

NOTE: Use the 6/18 1-inch pan head Phillips tapping screws.

  1. Extend all red clips to the screw mounting position by inserting a flat blade screwdriver at a marked location and the tab up from the lower slot to the upper slot.
  2. Hold the controller along the wall and mark drilling locations through the screw red clip slots,Phoenix-Controls-651-320-001-Programmable-BACnet-Controller-FIG \(5\)
  3. Remove the controller from the wall and drill four holes at the marked locations.
  4. Insert anchors into the four mounting screw holes.
  5. Place the controller on the wall/panel so that the holes are aligned. Insert the screws into the topside holes first and fasten them with a screwdriver, then insert and fasten screws in the bottom holes.

WIRING

  • All wiring must comply with applicable electrical codes and ordinances.
  • To comply with CE requirements, devices having a voltage of 50-1000 VAC or 75-1500 VDC, but lacking a supply cord, plug, or other means for disconnecting from the power supply must have the means of disconnect incorporated in the fixed wiring. This type of disconnect must have a contact separation of at least 1/8 in. (3 mm) at all poles.

Make electrical connections in the following order using the following instructions:

  1. Connect the communications cables.
  2. Make all ground connections.
  3. Apply power to the unit.

Phoenix Controls Wiring Recommendations

Refer to project-specific wiring diagrams for cable specifications.

  • Follow good wiring practices:
  • Do not run the signal cable in the same conduit or wireway as the power cables.
  • If the signal cable must cross power cables, it is best to do so at a 90-degree angle.
  • Shield or drain wires, if required, should be wrapped with insulating tape to prevent contact with exposed conductors or contacts.
  • Prior to connecting cables, provide strain relief for them to prevent damage to the controller.
  • Maintain a consistent color code or polarity all the way through the wiring system.
  • Local and national electrical codes take precedence.
  • Consult the project-specific wiring diagrams for exact details.

BACnet MS/TP Wiring Rules

BACnet MS/TP cabling:

  • 3-conductor, shielded cable with characteristic impedance between 100 and 130 ohms.
  • Allows for mix of isolated and non-isolated devices
  • 22 AWG limited to 4000 ft (1219 m) without repeaters.
  • Refer to project-specific wiring diagrams for Cable Specifications and Alternatives.
  • Segment length can be extended by use of repeaters (non-Phoenix Controls products provided by others). Three repeaters maximum between any two BACnet MS/TP devices.

Wiring specifics:

  • Network polarity must be maintained on all devices – plus to plus, minus to minus, ground to ground, and shield to shield as applicable for each device.
  • Bus connect all unused cable shields and ground wires (non-isolated with shield and non-isolated with ground devices, respectively) with dedicated wire nuts at each device; then connect MS/TP shield and ground wire together to earth ground at a single point only, typically end-of-line.
  • A terminating resistor that matches cable impedance is required (non-Phoenix Controls product provided by others) for devices without internal terminating resistors. Adding Phoenix Controls devices to existing MS/TP networks:
  • The existing cable installed as the MS/TP network must be verified for compatibility with MS/TP BACnet cable specifications.
  • BACnet valve controllers and other non-isolated Phoenix Controls devices may be added to an existing 2- conductor MS/TP network. However, the isolated-with-ground Advanced Pressure Monitor APM2xx-ENG-BAC can never be added to a 2-conductor (shielded twisted pair) MS/TP network.

Power

Earth grounding provides protection from electrostatic discharge or other forms of EMI. Before making power terminations, de-energize the 24V power source. Do not restore power until all other mounting and wiring is complete.

A single transformer can power more than one controller. The same side of the transformer secondary must be connected to the same power input terminal on each controller. Total power draw, including accessories, cannot exceed 100 VA when powered by the same transformer (U.S. only).

To power multiple controllers from a single transformer and connect the same transformer secondary side to each device same power input terminal. When connecting power, ensure that one leg of the 24 VAC/VDC secondary circuit and the grounded terminal on the device connect to known earth ground at the panel or enclosure. Limit the distance of the power wire running between the device and the transformer to 15 feet (4.5 meters) and restrict for same-room installation. The transformer must be UL-listed for smoke control. The transformer also needs to be mounted and installed in an enclosure.

Power Wiring Examples

NOTE : Earth Ground is a functional grounding and does not provide shock protection. Connect the Earth Ground terminal to the panel ground and ensure the panel ground connects to a know Earth Ground.

Termination Resistors

Matched terminating resistors are required at each end of a segment bus wired across (+) and (-). Use matched precision resistors rated ¼ W ± 1%/80 = 130 Ω

Shield Terminations

  • If shielding is used, the shielding of each bus segment should be separately connected at one end to the earth ground.
  • If any of the devices are electrically isolated, it is recommended that those devices be connected to a single ground.

Inputs/Outputs

Each I/O terminal can accommodate:

  • Single wire : From 22 AWG (0.3 mm2) to 18 AWG (1 mm2) solid or stranded.
  • Multiple wires: Up to two 18 AWG (1 mm2) stranded, with 1/4 watt wire-wound resistor.

Prepare wiring for the terminal blocks as follows:

  1. Strip 1/2 in. (13 mm) insulation from the conductor.
  2. Cut a single wire to 3/16 in (5 mm). Insert the wire in the required terminal location and tighten the screw.
  3. If two or more wires are being inserted into one terminal location, twist the wires together with a minimum of three turns before inserting them.
  4. Cut the twisted end of the wires to 3/16 in. (5 mm) before inserting them into the terminal and tightening the screw.
  5. Pull-on each wire in all terminals to check for good mechanical connection.

Universal I/O Wiring Examples

  • UL Standards recommend all wiring connections for the IO, SSR, 24 VAC / VDC circuits are restricted to the same room.
  • Use a protective diode for any circuit that allows the current to flow forward because the current will not flow in the reverse direction. The diode protects the components responsive to the current flow through them in the wrong direction.
