Instruction Manual

Features

The HarborShield™ Infrared Thermometer measures temperature by collecting the infrared heat radiating from a surface. The thermometer can measure both the human body and surface temperatures. The thermometer has a one-second read time and automatically shuts off after 15 seconds of inactivity.

  • 1 second read time
  • Select Fahrenheit (ºF) or Celsius (ºC)
  • Auto shut off
  • Accuracy ±0.2ºC/±0.4ºF
  • Historical readings logged in memory
  • FDA registered

Infrared thermometers are designed to measure surface temperatures and NOT the internal temperature of food or other materials. Food temperatures can only be accurately and safely taken using a probe thermometer designed specifically for cooking.

Infrared thermometers are widely used in manufacturing processes, HVAC, and concrete.

Using the Thermometer

Take Temperature

  1.  Slide switch on side of thermometer to Body or Surface Mode.

  2. Point the thermometer at the forehead or another surface.
For accurate body temperature, hold thermometer 2-4 in. from the forehead.
For accurate surface temperature, hold thermometer 2-4 in. from the surface.

  3. Press the trigger and release after 1 second when you hear a “Beep”.
Thermometer will sound “Beep” alerts for a few seconds when Body Temperature exceeds 100.4ºF (38ºC).
    Color-Coded Display (Body Mode only)
Green – Reading is between 95ºF and 99ºF.
Yellow – Reading is below 95ºF (”Lo” warning appears and thermometer beeps for a few seconds). Or, reading is between 99ºF-100.4ºF.
Red – Reading is between 100.4ºF and 107.6ºF. “Hi” warning if the temperature is over 107.6ºF.

Accuracy

Infrared thermometer accuracy may be affected by:

  • Frost, moisture, dust, fog, smoke, particles in the air, or extreme temperature and/or humidity.
  • Air conditioning or fans blowing nearby.
  • Rapid changes in ambient temperature.
  • Dropping the thermometer.
  • Proximity to a radio frequency with an electromagnetic field strength of 3 volts per meter or greater.

Cautions & Limitations

  • Do not immerse in water. The thermometer is not waterproof.

  • Use caution around extremely hot surfaces and open flames.

  • IR thermometers are meant to measure surface temperature and NOT the internal temperature of food.

  • Thermometers cannot measure the temperature of objects immersed in liquid or underwater. The temperature reading will be of the liquid itself.

  • Thermometers cannot measure the temperature of objects through transparent surfaces (ex. windows). Temperature reading will be of the glass surface and not the area
    beyond.

  • Remove batteries during long periods of inactivity.
