Troubleshooting Your Hearing Amplifier
ISSUE
|
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
---|---
Hearing aid stopped working or sound is weak| Clean the sound tube and ear
dome to restore full amplification. Directions & Cleaning Kit included)
Need more amplification or product emits excessive whistling|
- Try closed-ear dome for more mplification (up to 5-8 dB more and to eliminate whistling).
- Ensure ear dome fits securely in-ear anal.
- Ensure the sound tube is securely attached.
Too much background noise| Try using Listening Program 2 or 3
First-time users of Hearing Aids
The first time you use your new Helix some sounds may seem very loud. You may
hear the faucet drip, beeps from electronics, crumpling paper; sounds you may
have not heard in a long time. This can be overwhelming at first. Don’t worry,
your brain will adjust to these new sounds, it just takes a little time.
We recommend starting slowly. Eventually, your brain will learn to “turn down”
some sounds, like crumpling paper, while “turning up” the sounds you want to
hear, like conversations with loved ones. This process can take up to 21 days
to become fully adjusted to your new hearing device.
Start by first wearing them for 20-30 minutes at a time in a more private/quiet
setting. Avoid noisy areas like restaurants at first. Gradually start wearing
your new hearing device for longer time periods and in different settings
until you are able to wear them all day.
In a few weeks, your brain will become “re-programmed”, conversations will be
easier to hear and follow, and you will find yourself more relaxed and confident
in social situations.
Things to Avoid
- Avoid physical shock, such as dropping on the floor
- Store in a cool dry place with the battery door completely open when not in use
- Do not get your Otofonix Helix wet
- Do not use hair spray or a hairdryer while wearing your Helix
- Do not expose your Helix to excessive heat or moisture (use a hearing aid dehumidifiereach night if you live in a humid climate)
| Program 1| Program 2| Program 3| Program 4
---|---|---|---|---
Memory Setting| Normal Listening| Noisy Setting| TV Mode| Telecoil
Description| Quiet setting with some noise reduction| Maximum background
noise reduction| Amplifies all frequencies, no noise reduction| Only works in
venues with Inductive audio loops
Notification Method| Single Beep| Two Beeps| Three Beeps| Four Beeps
TECOIL LISTENING MODE
For use with hearing loop systems found in churches, theaters, and conference
centers. The telecoil in the Encore picks up the signals from the hearing loop
and transmits them directly to the amplifier providing a crisp, clear sound.
When you see the Telecoil logo at your church, theater, etc, simply switch to
Program 4 to turn off the microphones and enable the Telecoil.
Care and Maintenance
For optimal performance, keep the sound tube and ear dome clean. Use a
cleaning brush daily to clear the ear dome of wax. Clean sound tubes often and
anytime amplification stops or seems reduced.
Remove sound tube: Turn base of tube counter-clockwise and body of amplifier
clockwise
Remove ear dome from the sound tube by inverting ear dome and pulling straight off
Insert wire through the base of the sound tube and pull out the opposite end
Brush microphones and ear dome clean (DAILY)
LEADING CAUSES FOR LITTLE OR NO AMPLIFICATION
- Wax Obstruction – Even if you cannot see it, the wax may be stuck in the sound tube and/or ear dome. Follow the steps on this page to restore maximum amplification.
Notice for Prospective Users / FDA Information
Good health practice requires that a person with a hearing loss have a medical
evaluation by a licensed physician (referable a physician with specializes in
diseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearing aid. Licensed physicians who
specialize in diseases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngologists,
otologists or otorhinolaryngologists. The purpose of the medical evaluation is
to assure that all medically treatable conditions that may affect hearing are
identified and treated before the hearing aid is purchased.
Following the medical evaluation, the physician will give you a written
statement that states your hearing loss has been medically evaluated and that
you may be considered a candidate for a hearing aid. The physician will refer
you to a Hearing Healthcare Professional for a hearing aid evaluation.
The audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct a hearing aid evaluation
to assess your ability to hear with and without a hearing aid. The hearing aid
evaluation will enable the healthcare provider to select and fit a hearing aid
to your individual needs.
If you have reservations about your ability to adapt to amplification, you
should inquire about the availability of a trial/rental or purchase-option
program. Many Hearing Healthcare Professionals now offer programs that permit
you to wear and hearing aid for a period of time for a nominal fee after which
you may decide if you want to purchase the hearing aid.
Children With Hearing Loss:
In addition to seeing a physician for a medical evaluation, a child with a
hearing loss should be directed to an audiologist for evaluation and
rehabilitation. Hearing loss may cause problems in language development,
educational growth, and social growth of a child. Training and experience
qualify an audiologist to assist in the evaluation and rehabilitation of a
child with a hearing loss. This hearing aid is not suitable for use by anyone
under the age of 18.
Notice to Hearing Healthcare Providers
A hearing aid dispenser should advise a prospective hearing aid user to consult promptly with a licensed physician (referable and ear specialist) before dispensing a hearing aid. If the hearing aid dispenser determines through inquiry, actual observation, or review of any other available information concerning the prospective user, that the prospective user has any of the following conditions, then consult a physician.
- Visible congenital or dramatic deformity of the ear
- Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onset within the previous 90 days.
- History of active drainage from the ear within the previous 90 days
- Audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater then 15 decibels at 500 hertz (Hz), 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz
- History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss wishing the previous 90 days
- Visible evidence of sudden cerumen accumulation or a foreign body in the ear canal
- Acute or chronic dizziness
- Pain or discomfort in the ear
Special care should be exercised in selecting and fitting a hearing aid whose
maximum sound pressure level exceeds 132 decibels because there may be risk of
impairing the remaining hearing of the hearing aid user
A hearing aid will not restore normal hearing and will not prevent or improve
a hearing impairment resulting from organic conditions. In most cases
infrequent use of a hearing aid does not permit a user to attain full benefit
from it. The use of hearing aid(s) is only part of hearing rehabilitation and
may need to be supplemented by auditory training and instruction in lip
reading.
