Painting Guide

Panaray Speaker

WARNINGS/CAUTIONS

  • Proper paint application is the responsibility of the integrator or installer. Application technique is as important as paint selection and preparation.
  • It is the responsibility of the integrator or installer to ensure no degradation to the grille attachment occurs as a result of painting or scrim reapplication.
  • Do not paint any loudspeaker while it is installed.
  • Ensure all loudspeaker wires/cables and AC mains power connections are disconnected before painting.
  • Do not paint any area that is covered by the grille. This area has critical acoustic and mounting components that will not function properly or safely if covered in paint. Properly mask it before painting.
  • Do not paint any connectors or areas where electrical connections are made.
  • Do not paint over labels or critical safety markings. Properly mask them before painting.
  • Do not paint any suspension cable or suspension cable hardware.

These instructions apply only to the following loudspeaker models:

  • DesignMax DM2C‑LP, DM2S, DM3C, DM3SE, DM3P, DM5C, DM5SE, DM5P, DM6C, DM6SE, DM6PE, DM8C, DM8S, DM8C‑SUB, DM10S‑SUB, DM10P‑SUB
  • EdgeMax EM90, EM180
  • Panaray MSA12X
Do NOT paint FreeSpace FS, ArenaMatch (AM), or ArenaMatch Utility (AMU) loudspeakers.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS

Before starting to paint, review the Warnings/Cautions above.
Use paint appropriate for the material indicated in the instructions below.
Note: Multiple coats of paint can clog grille holes and negatively affect its acoustic performance. We recommend using spray paint that includes primer so it can be applied in a single, even coat.

DesignMax & EdgeMax In-ceiling Loudspeakers DM2C-LP, DM3C, DM5C, DM6C, DM8C, DM8C-SUB, EM90 & EM180

  1. Remove the grille from the loudspeaker (if it is already
    attached).

  2. Remove the logo from the grille.

  3. Remove the scrim (grille cloth) from the grille.
Note: Not removing the scrim will negatively affect the loudspeaker appearance and acoustic performance.
    A. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar object to peel up a small section of the scrim.
    B. Grab the scrim with your fingers and pull it back slowly to remove it in one piece.

  4. Use a dry cloth to clean all surfaces that you want to paint.

  5. Paint the grille (powder-coated steel).
Note: Do not over-apply paint to the grille. Excess paint will negatively affect the acoustic performance.
Note: You do not need to paint the enclosure or baffle.
These parts are not visible when the grille is attached.

  6. Reattach the scrim to the grille, if desired. To determine if you need to reattach the scrim, check if any components (woofer, labels, screws, magnets, etc.) are
visible when the painted grille is placed over them.
Note: If needed, you can apply adhesive directly to the grille to help keep the scrim in place and prevent it from moving during loudspeaker performance.

  7. Reattach the unpainted logo to the grille, if desired.

DesignMax Surface-mount Loudspeakers DM2S, DM3SE, DM5SE, DM6SE, DM8S & DM10S-SUB

  1. Remove the grille from the loudspeaker (if it is already attached). To do this, turn the loudspeaker so its bracket slots are facing you, and find the two small openings where the grille meets the enclosure. Insert a small, flat tool into those openings to disengage the release tabs, and then pull the grille away from the loudspeaker.

  2. Remove the logo from the grille by pinching the button on the inside of the grille.

  3. Remove the scrim (grille cloth) from the grille.
Note: Not removing the scrim will negatively affect the loudspeaker appearance and acoustic performance.
    A. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar object to peel up a small section of the scrim.
BOSE Panaray Speaker-fig3B. Grab the scrim with your fingers and pull it back slowly to remove it in one piece.
Note: The DM3SE, DM5SE, and DM6SE models have foam strips on the edges of the scrim to improve acoustic performance. Remove these when you remove the scrim.

  4. Use a dry cloth to clean all surfaces that you want to paint.

  5. Paint the grille:
    • DM2S, DM8S, and DM10S-SUB: Powder-coated steel
    • DM3SE, DM5SE, and DM6SE: Powder-coated aluminum
Note: Do not over-apply paint to the grille. Excess paint will negatively affect the acoustic performance.

  6. Mask the loudspeaker labels, connectors and other components.
WARNING: Do NOT paint the ends of the mounting bracket that are concealed by the loudspeaker. If you need to paint the bracket, paint only the part of the bracket that is visible while it is attached to the loudspeaker (the gray- shaded area shown here).

  7. Paint the enclosure:
    • All models except DM10S-SUB: Plastic (PC+PBT)
    • DM10S-SUB: Plastic-coated particle board

  8. After the paint is dry, remove all masking.

  9. Reattach the scrim to the grille, if desired. To determine if you need to reattach the scrim, check if any components (woofer, labels, screws, magnets, etc.) are visible when the painted grille is placed over them.
Note: For DM3SE, DM5SE, and DM6SE models, we recommend reattaching the foam strips (mentioned in Step 3B) to the edges of the grille even if you do not reattach the scrim. You can add adhesive to these foam strips if needed.
Note: If needed, you can apply adhesive directly to the grille to help keep the scrim in place and prevent it from moving during loudspeaker performance.

  10. .Reattach the unpainted logo to the grille, if desired.

DesignMax Pendant Loudspeakers DM3P, DM5P, DM6PE & DM10P-SUB

  1. Remove the grille from the loudspeaker. To do this, grab the grille with both hands and use slow, consistent force to pull it off of the friction mounting clips of the enclosure.

  6. Mask the loudspeaker labels, connectors and other components, including the cable attachment point.
Note: Do not paint the suspension cable. If an alternative-color suspension cable is needed, source it separately.

  7. Paint the enclosure (polypropylene [PP] plastics).

  8. After the paint is dry, remove all masking.

  9. Reattach the scrim to the grille, if desired. To determine if you need to reattach the scrim, check if any components (woofer, labels, screws, magnets, etc.) are visible when the painted grille is placed over them.
Note: If needed, you can apply adhesive directly to the grille to help keep the scrim in place and prevent it from moving during loudspeaker performance.

  10. Reattach the unpainted logo to the grille, if desired.
