Completely read through the operating instructions, the ‘Warranty and Additional Information’ booklet as well as the latest information under the internet link at the end of these instructions. Follow the instructions they contain. This document must be kept in a safe place and passed on together with the device.

Function / Application

Cable tracer set with transmitter and receiver

  • Fast tracing of coherent electrical circuits.
  • Location of lines in coherent, live electrical circuits.
  • Detection of fuse circuits in live installations.
  • Transmitter power supply directly from the power cable to be tested
  • measurement under operating conditions.
  • Socket adapter for direct and fast testing in building installations.
  • E27 lamp adapter for direct and fast testing in lamp circuits.

Safety instructions

  • The device must only be used in accordance with its intended purpose and within the scope of the specifications.
  • The measuring tools and accessories are not toys. Keep out of reach of children.
  • Modifications or changes to the device are not permitted, this will otherwise invalidate the approval and safety specifications.
  • Do not expose the device to mechanical stress, extreme temperatures, moisture, or significant vibration.
  • The device must no longer be used if one or more of its functions fail or the battery charge is weak.
  • Clean and dry the device before use.
  • This device is to be used in enclosed spaces only; do not expose to moisture or rain as this may result in electric shock.
  • If you are working with voltages higher than 24 V/AC RMS / 60 V/DC, exercise extreme caution. Touching the electrical conductors at such voltages poses a risk of life-threatening electric shocks.
  • If the device comes into contact with moisture or other conductive residue, work must not be carried out under voltage. At and above voltages of 24 V/AC RMS/60  V/DC, the presence of moisture creates the risk of life-threatening electric shocks.
  • Before taking any measurements, make sure that both the area to be tested (e.g. a line), the test device and the accessories used (e.g. connection cable) are in proper working order. Test the device by connecting it to known voltage sources (e.g. a 230 V socket in the case of AC testing).
  • Observe the safety precautions of local and national authorities relating to the correct use of the device and any prescribed safety equipment (e.g. electrician‘s safety gloves).
  • Hold the device by the grip sections only. Do not touch the test prods during measurement.
  • Only connect the completely prepared device (transmitter with test leads plugged in) to a power source. First, disconnect the electrical circuit from the power supply and only switch it on again after wiring work has been completed. Lock the master switch to prevent it from being inadvertently switched on.
  • Do not operate the transmitter (the device) continuously, but only while actually capturing images.
  • Once the capture is complete, disconnect the transmitter (the device) and the leads from the circuit.
  • Do not work alone in the vicinity of hazardous electrical installations and only under the guidance of a qualified electrician.
  • The measuring device must not be used as a substitute for a two-pole zero potential test.
  • Please be aware that even if a visual signal is not displayed, the voltage may still be present. Differences in the design of the connection socket or the nature of the insulation  (thickness and type) can affect functionality. Voltage cannot be detected behind panels and metal covers.
  • The sender introduces the measuring voltage into the lines to be tested. This may impair or damage sensitive electronic equipment (e.g. network cards). Therefore, please make sure that any lines to be tested which belong to sensitive electronic equipment are isolated before measurement.
  • Only use the original adapter.
  • Do not use the device in environments containing explosive gases or vapor.
  • Protect the device from contamination and damage and store it in a dry place.

Additional information on the use

Observe the technical safety regulations for working in the vicinity of electrical systems, especially: 1. Safely isolated from the power supply, 2. Securing to prevent the system from being switched on again, 3. Checking zero potential, two-pole, 4. Earthing and short-circuiting, 5. Securing and covering adjacent live components.

Safety instructions
Dealing with electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic disruptions

  • The measuring device complies with safety and electromagnetic compatibility regulations and limits values in accordance with Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive / LVD) and 2014/30/EU (Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive / EMC).

  • Umarex GmbH & Co. KG hereby declares that the AC-Tracer complies with the essential requirements and other provisions of the European Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU (LVD) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 2014/30/EU.
The EU Declaration of Conformity can be found in its entirety at the following address: http://laserliner.com/info?an=AAI

  • Local operating restrictions – for example, in hospitals, aircraft, petrol stations, or in the vicinity of people with pacemakers – may apply. Electronic devices can potentially cause hazards or interference or be subject to hazards or interference.

  1. How it works
Measurement is performed using one transmitter and one receiver. The transmitter feeds signals into the cable to be checked. The signal is a modulated current that creates an electromagnetic field about the conductor. The receiver recognizes this field and is then able to find and locate cables, sockets, etc. with this signal.

  2. Sender TX: Set-up
The tracer requires no battery and is operated by the power supply. This means only live cables can be tested. Before using the tracer, connect the required lead (4, 5, 6),  ensuring correct polarity. The device is operational when indicator lamp (1) is on.

  3. Finding cables, sockets, etc. incoherent electrical circuits.
The measurement under voltage! It is essential that you follow the safety instructions.
Connect the transmitter to the line to be measured.
Then switch on the receiver and start tracing, see Fig.
a and b. The receiver signal sounding indicates that the measured object belongs to the same electrical circuit. The receiver is able to detect cables up to a maximum depth of 5 cm. Various installation conditions and metal shielding can drastically influence the maximum measuring depth.
Tip 1: Set the receiver to maximum sensitivity and hold the sensor head as close as possible to the cable connection.

  4. Locating fuse circuits
Measurement under voltage! It is essential that you follow the safety instructions.
    • The cover of the fuse box may only be removed by a skilled electrician.
Connect the transmitter to the line to be measured.
Then turn on the receiver and start tracing. See Fig. c.
The detected fuse is located in the area where the signal tone of the receiver sounds. Due to different installation conditions (RCD automatic circuit breakers, types of fuses, etc.), in most cases, it is not possible to precisely locate the fuse but rather only to narrow down the area where it is located.
Tip 2: Decrease the receiver sensitivity in steps in order to closely narrow down the location of the fuse.
Tip 3: Rotate the receiver around its longitudinal axis by 90° or modify its horizontal and vertical positions.
This will adjust the device to different automatic circuit breakers, which have magnetic coils installed in different positions. Re-adapt the sensitivity if necessary.Laserliner 083 050A AC Tracer Cable Locator - figure
