INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for choosing an Etac product.
To avoid accidents and injury when moving and handling the products, read the manual carefully. The person described as “the user” in this user manual is the person who is lying or sitting on the product. The carers are the people who manoeuvre the product. This symbol appears alongside the text in the manual. It draws the reader’s attention to points at which there may be a risk to the health and safety of the user or carer. These products comply with the standards applicable for Class 1 products in the Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on medical devices At Etac we strive to improve our products all the time and therefore we reserve the right to make changes to products without prior warning. The information given in this manual, including recommendations, combinations and sizing, does not apply to special orders and modifications. If the customer makes adjustments, repairs or combinations not predetermined by Etac, the Etac CE certification and Etac warranty will not be valid. If in doubt, please contact Etac. Warranty: Two-year warranty on material and manufacturing defects, provided that the product is used correctly. Expected lifetime: The device has an expected service life of 1 to 2 years under normal use. In case of an adverse event occurred in relation to the device, incidents should be reported to your local dealer and the national competent authority in a timely manner. The local dealer will forward information to manufacturer.

Intended use
Swan is a glide pad. Swan is used for manual handling to/from bed/wheelchair/commode/armchair/car seat, etc. Alternatively, Swan can be used to help move a user higher up in the bed, turn a user in bed and to return a user to a wheelchair/armchair.

Practical handling

Positioning
Fold the glide pad where the green and grey nylon meet, so that the grey nylon is facing upwards/towards the user. Roll the user against the direction of movement to make positioning of the glide pad easier. If the user has poor balance, the carer can help support him/her (see Illustration 1). The carer pushes the glide pad under the user by laying both hands between the two sides of the glide pad so that the closed side glides about halfway in under the user. A glide board is then positioned under the glide pad so that one of the user’s buttocks is on the glide board. The cutout at the opposite end of the board is placed against the wheelchair wheel. The glide board ensures safe and comfortable manual handling (see Illustration 2). To ease manual handling, the user can be turned at a slight angle to the wheelchair.

USE

Turning with assistance from 1 or 2 carers:
The carer is now ready to pull on the functional handle to perform manual handling. The carer stands with one foot forward diagonally behind the wheelchair and pulls the user slowly towards him/herself using weight transference.
Make sure that the user leans in the direction of movement. This will make pulling easier (see Illustration 3). If the user is passive, this kind of manual handling should be performed by two carers. One supports the user, either sitting at his/her side or standing in front of the user, while the other carer pulls as described above. To remove the glide pad: the carer stands behind the user and pulls diagonally backwards and towards him/herself. The carer pulls on the unquilted part of the glide pad. Alternatively, the carer pulls on the unquilted part of the glide pad from the side of the wheelchair (see Illustration 4). Similar kinds of manual handling can be performed, for example, when exiting/entering a vehicle, moving to/from other forms of seating, etc. The user will glide more easily if the carer creates an angle (e.g. where the bed is slightly higher than the wheelchair). In the case of the manual handling with two carers described above, it would be ideal to use SupportBelt too.

Alternative use

To glide back in the chair:
To position the user in a chair using a hoist: First position – Fold the Swan glide pad where the green and grey nylon meet, so that the grey nylon is facing upwards/towards the user and the closed part is facing the free edge of the wheelchair. The open part faces the wheelchair back. Push any excess material and the handles out between the wheelchair backrest and seat. Lift the user into the wheelchair in the normal way. Remove the sheet and fit the footrests. Position the user’s feet on the footrests. A carer stands in front of the user, supporting the user so that he/she does not slide out of the wheelchair. The carer stands behind the wheelchair and treads down on the handle, and the user glides back. A “thigh-walk” technique can also be used if necessary to move the user back in the wheelchair. If the wheelchair can be tipped, the user may be able to glide back without further assistance.

Moving the user higher up in the bed:
Swan can also be used to move the user higher up in the bed. The glide pad is folded where the green and grey nylon meet, so that the grey nylon is facing upwards/towards the user. The glide pad is then pushed under the user’s pillow, head, neck and shoulders. If the user can lift his/her pelvis, the user will now glide slowly higher up the bed. If the user is passive, the carers can stand with one foot forward at the side of the bed and position a Sling, towel, incontinence sheet or similar under the user’s pelvis. By gripping the two handles on the side of the Swan glide pad or Sling or OneManSling, the carers can pull the user higher up using weight transference. Here too, it may be an advantage to create an angle.

Turning a user in bed:
Fold the glide pad where the green and grey nylon meet, so that the grey nylon is facing upwards/towards the user. Position Swan under the part of the body that is to be moved and using the “rocking the boat” principle (i.e. transferring the weight to the Swan glide pad), the carers can now perform manual handling or turn the user as the friction is now minimal. Remember: Always remove the Swan glide pad after use by pulling on the unquilted back side.

Special features.
Always check the product before use and after washing. Never use a defective product. If the product shows signs of wear-and-tear, it must be scrapped. Read these instructions carefully. It is important that carers receive instruction in manual handling. Etac offers advice and training for carers. For further information, contact Etac. Always use the correct manual handling techniques. Encourage the user to assist where possible. To ensure that the user feels safe and that every manual handling is smooth, always plan the manual handling in advance.

There is a risk that the user may slide off. Never leave the user alone on the edge of the bed.
Never leave the product on the floor
Always conduct a risk assessment, and ensure that the assistive product can be used for the individual user and, in combination with other devices, that it is safe for the user and carers.
The user must have good balance in the seated position.
Remember to apply the brakes to lock the wheelchair and bed.

Material and cleaning

Material:

100% nylon. Part of the glide pad is padded with polyester fibre.
Handles: polyester
The product should be checked regularly, preferably each time it is used, and especially after washing.
Check that there is no damage to seams or fabric.
Never try to repair a product yourself. Never use a defective product.

Washing instructions:
Do not use fabric softener – as this will reduce the glide effect. This product can be cleaned with a solvent-free cleaning agent with a pH level between 5 and 9, or a 70% disinfection solution.

Service information

First inspection:

Is the packaging intact?
Read the label on the packaging and check the article no. and product description
Check that Short Instruction is enclosed – updated User Manual/Instruction for use can be downloaded from www.etac.com or contact your Etac Customer Service or the local dealer.
Check the label on the product – does it include article no., product description, lot/batch no., cleaning instructions and supplier name?

Periodic Inspection:

Make sure that your Manual transfer system always is in a perfect condition.
After wash – always check materials, stitching, handles, buckles.
If the product shows signs of wear and tear, it must be removed from service immediately.

Visual inspection/Check the product:
Ensure that the materials, seams, stitching, handles, buckles are intact/faultless.

Mechanical load or stress/Test handles:
Draw hard in the handles in opposite directions and control the material, seams and stitching. Test buckles: Lock the buckle and draw in opposite directions, control the buckle and the stitching.

Check:

Stability test:
Try to bend the product verify that it feels firm, stable and solid.

Test low/high friction:
Place the product on a firm surface or a bed, place your hands on the material and test the friction by pushing your hands down into the product. Low friction – slides effortlessly High friction – no sliding/moving
