MSA Latchways WinGrip® AIO
General information
Instructions shall be retained and provided to all Users of Latchways WinGrip
AIOs in the language of the destination country, even when resold. Failure to
follow these instructions may cause serious injury or death.
Users of Latchways WinGrip AIOs shall be medically fit and formally trained in
the use of the system by MSA or an appointed MSA training partner. Latchways
WinGrip AIOs shall not be used by pregnant women, minors or those under the
influence of alcohol or drugs.
Latchways WinGrip is a temporary anchor solution that utilises vacuum
technology to enable quick, temporary, safe access to maintenance and
construction areas without permanently affecting the interfacing substrate.
Latchways WinGrip may be used on surfaces similar to aircraft wings that are
even/flat, nonporous, free from contamination and dirt.
Latchways WinGrip AIO is supplied with a self-contained high pressure gas
cylinder and has a sealed vacuum area of 0.13 m2.
Intended use and product limitations
Latchways WinGrip AIO is designed for a single User per attachment point. The maximum User weight (including tools and equipment) is 140 kg. It is lightweight (6 kg) and portable and may be used in both wet and dry situations.
- Operated solely on compressed air or nitrogen, no electrical requirement making it intrinsically safe to use with open fuel tanks.
- Working temperature range of -12°C (10°F) to + 50°C (125°F)
- 20 minutes of safe use after vacuum generation has ceased
- Latchways WinGrip may be used at any angle between 0º and 90º. It is not suitable to be used upside down.
- The device shall not be positioned such that water could accumulate and create a hazard, or used when there is a risk of frost or freezing conditions where the conditions create a hazard.
- The anchor device shall only be used for personal fall protection not for lifting equipment.
Designed to be used in restraint for maximum safety and also arrest capable;
with a minimum nominal radius of 1.6 m. The Latchways WinGrip AIO (Figure 1)
equips the User with a means of limiting the dynamic forces exert on the User
during a fall to a maximum of 4 kN.
Latchways WinGrip AIO rubber seal composition offers resistance against
aerospace fluid contaminants whilst maintaining flexibility and a high shear
loading. The maximum loads transmitted from the anchor to the surface is 89.1
kN per m2; this force is horizontal.
Pre-use checks and periodic examination
The safety of the User relies upon the continued efficiency and durability of the equipment therefore pre-use checks shall be completed before each use as specified in Table
- Periodic examinations shall be completed by a Technician1, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The interval will be dictated by the usage (Table 2), local regulations or environmental conditions and shall be at least annually. It is recommended that the device is marked with the date of next examination.
Records shall be kept of the results of the examination (page 54).
Table 2 Periodic examination interval
Usage | Interval |
---|---|
Infrequent to light | Annually (12 months) |
Moderate to heavy | Semi-annually to annually (6-12 months) |
Severe to continuous | Quarterly to semi-annually (3-6 months) |
Usage shall be determined by a Technician1.
1. Technician: a person, other than the User, who is trained by MSA to
examine, repair and recertify Latchways WinGrip AIOs, in accordance with MSA’s
instructions.
Latchways WinGrip AIO shall not be altered or added to and shall be repaired
by a Technician1 in accordance with the MSA’s instructions.
Air Supply:
Latchways WinGrip AIO is designed to be used with the Latchways WinGrip
cylinder or a clean, dry supply of compressed air*, including outside of
hanger with a nitrogen trolley.
Whilst it is possible to use lubricated compressors system, performance may be
affected due to the potential for liquid or particle intake.
The use of an additional vacuum anchor via a primary hose will greatly reduce
the working time of the cylinder. It is therefore advisable to use shop air
when a task requires the employment of the flying anchor. The cylinder may be
stored on the Latchways WinGrip AIO and used as an additional supply in an
emergency situation. An additional cyclinder may be stored on the Latchways
WinGrip Flying Anchor for use for system evacuation (Figure 6).
Installation and use
A written rescue plan and the means to implement it shall be in place to deal
with emergencies that may arise during use.
Ensure PPE is suitable, worn correctly and fulfills site specific criteria.
For installation steps see Figure 2. Installation of a vacuum anchor has three
phases – Surface, Installation and Integrity.
Safe access
At all times access shall be achieved in a safe manor; observing the hierarchy
of risk for fall protection.
At all times it is preferable to work in restraint. When moving, restraint is
achieved through good rope discipline Table 3. When working in restraint is
not possible and there is a potential to fall (e.g. working at a wing tip),
then fall clearances shall be known and the fall path kept clear. Minimum fall
clearance is indicated in Figure 1. The maximum deflection of the anchor and
energy absorber during a fall is 1 m.
Careful consideration shall be given to access to the wing. Where a suitable
anchor point is not available the flying anchor shall be used to achieve safe
access (Figure 3).
Cleaning, maintenance and storage
The system components may require cleaning or disinfecting after use.
Components shall be thoroughly rinsed, using warm water and domestic
detergent, and allowed to dry naturally, away from direct heat. Methyl alcohol
may be used to remove heavy dirt deposits on metal and rubber components only.
Solvents, thinners and chemical cleaning agents shall not be used unless
specified by MSA.
When not in use the Latchways WinGrip components shall be stored in the case
supplied; compressed air or nitrogen vented and vacuum vented from the
anchors. Components shall be protected from direct sunlight, excessive heat,
high humidity, sharp edges and corrosives. The components shall not be
subjected to unnecessary stress, pressure or rough handling. Wet components
shall be dried naturally away from direct heat.
Incorrect storage may reduce the service life of the components.
Maximum product life
Latchways WinGrip AIO service life is determined by the device condition as
prescribed by pre-use checks and periodic examinations; there is no fixed
service life. Continued use is dependent upon passing pre-use checks and
periodic examinations. Service life may be reduced by frequency and conditions
of use or local regulations. Components with a fixed maximum service life are
indicated in Table 4.
If an issue is identified, a User has fallen on the anchor or any doubt
exists as to the suitability, the Latchways WinGrip AIO shall be tagged
“unusable” and withdrawn from service.
Prior to return to service MSA or a Technician1 shall confirm, in writing,
that Latchways WinGrip AIO has passed examination.
WinGrip component disposal:
The stainless steel, aluminium, rubber and plastic parts of Latchways WinGrip
AIOs are recyclable. The harness and Energy absorber lanyards shall be cut, to
prevent accidental use, and disposed of as domestic waste.

Installation of the AIO
Preparation:
Attach the cylinder01 to the Latchways WinGrip AIO.
Surface:
Ensure the surface is non-porous, even and free from contamination. Remove
excessive moisture.
Maintain the downward pressure and operate the Slide valve19 to the ON
position. Depress the Alarm mute 11 until the needle enters the green.
Avoid applying pressure to the center of the anchor
Integrity: Whilst pressing the Test button 10 ensure that the Vacuum anchor gauge 09 needle remains stable, movement of one mark or more indicates a leak that will affect anchor performance during use. Switch anchor off and re-site anchor, repeating the installation steps. If anchor fails again, return the anchor to issuing stores for fault investigation.
Attach to the anchor point, face gate uppermost to avoid surface damage.

Service Life
- Subject to passing Pre-use checks and Periodic examinations.
